Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World[]

Pocahontas and John Rolfe first meet when he is sent to the New World to bring back the Powhatan Chief to meet with King James. Their first interaction occurs at the dock, when both Pocahontas and John step in to stop a fight breaking out between the Natives and the settlers. Pocahontas is cold to him, telling John that she does not need his help; she wants the settlers to trust her and her people, and does not need to be saved by a White man. John is put off, although not by her race but by nature of Pocahontas being a woman. He overhears some settlers discussing how Pocahontas would never allow a war to break out between the Native people and the settlers, and mistakenly assumes that "Pocahontas" is the name of the Chief.

He arrives at the indigenous encampment and offers a horse as a gift to "Pocahontas". The Chief calls forth his daughter, and John, realizing his mistake, tries to take back the gift. Pocahontas does not allow him to do so. John then explains why he is there, and asks the Chief to join him in a voyage to London to meet the King. The Chief refuses, and instead suggests that the King come across the sea to meet him instead. Pocahontas, sensing strife, offers to go in her father's place and meet with the King. John is again put off by a woman taking charge, but relents.

Pocahontas and John voyage together on boat across the ocean, both still rather cold with one another. They arrive in London, which Pocahontas is mesmerized by. John takes her home, then goes to see the King, leaving a reluctant Pocahontas behind. There he also meets Ratcliffe, who wants to see the end of Pocahontas. He suggests that John and Pocahontas attend a Ball the next night. John tries to oppose this idea, believing it to be a trap, but the King loves it. He returns home and explains the situation to Pocahontas. She accepts the challenge of learning all about English high society in one day.

John's maid, Mrs. Jenkins, dresses Pocahontas in English clothing. She excitedly runs into John's bedroom in her "underwear", which causes John to blush and look away. Later, once she is more appropriately dressed, she dances with John. In preparing for the ball, Pocahontas removes her iconic necklace, saying it does not belong in this world. John is seen to react to this, perhaps realizing all that he is asking of Pocahontas. The pair head to the ball that night, and dance together, nearly kissing at one point before they are dragged away by different dance partners.

At dinner, John pulls out Pocahontas' chair. Ratcliffe, still wanting to see Pocahontas' undoing, prepares for a bear show as entertainment. This outrages Pocahontas, who tries to save the bear and calls all the English "savages" for their treatment of the animal. This reaction sees her locked away in the Tower of England for treason. John Rolfe is left frustrated and unsure of what to do next; until John Smith, previously presumed dead, arrives and helps him concoct a plan to save Pocahontas.

They break into the Tower together, and Pocahontas and John Rolfe reunite. However, Pocahontas also reunites with John Smith, whom she is shocked to see is alive. All three of them fight off the guards and break out of the Tower, making a run for it. In the woods, Pocahontas separates from the two Johns to contemplate her next steps. John Smith tries to run after her but John Rolfe stops him. Smith says that Rolfe must not care about her safety, before realizing that Rolfe is actually in love with her.

When Pocahontas returns, she decides to stand up for her people and stop the armada that Ratcliffe intends to sail to the New World. John Rolfe returns her necklace to her, saying that she'll need the "power" it holds for her. Pocahontas, John Smith, and John Rolfe then engage Ratcliffe and his men in a fight, and successfully stop war from brewing. Later, both Johns are commended for their work. John Smith pulls Pocahontas aside and tells her he has been given a ship, which he wants the two of them to use to sail the world. However, he quickly realizes this is not what Pocahontas wants. Understanding that her love for him has passed and that she loves John Rolfe now, he gives Pocahontas his blessing, wishing her "happiness".

Pocahontas, still not knowing that John Rolfe loves her, boards a boat back to her home land. She searches for John in the crowd, and is disappointed to see that he did not come to see her off. She boards the ship and gazes sadly out at London. However, to her surprise, John is also aboard the ship. He explains that his new duty is not to the King, but to what is in his heart. The pair finally kiss, as they set off to their home.

Fanon[]

Pocaholfe is considered a rarepair in the fandom, and is generally disliked by fans of the original Pocahontas film. Many believe that the direct-to-video sequel commits character assassination against John Smith simply to convince the viewers that John Rolfe is the better love interest. Despite trying to stick closer to historical events by having Pocahontas end up with Rolfe, the film is still very inaccurate, especially in its portrayal of Rolfe and their romantic relationship.

Still, there is a very small but dedicated fanbase that prefers John Rolfe to John Smith. They see him as being a better match for Pocahontas, and believe that he has more respect for her and her culture than John Smith ever did.

On AO3 it is the third most popular ship in the fandom, as well as being Pocahontas' third most popular ship. It is John Rolfe's most popular ship. There are currently 13 works for this pairing on AO3, although there are only 4 works that do not also include the Smithontas ship.
