In the novel that started the franchise, Pongo and his wife are the “owners” of the married humans Mr. and Mrs. Dearly. Pongo’s wife was originally named Missis, becoming Missis Pongo upon her marriage. Perdita is the name of an entirely separate character, a liver-spotted female Dalmatian who becomes a second mother to Pongo and Missus’ fifteen original puppies. However, Pongo in no way regards her as a second wife, and is entirely loyal to Missis. Moreover, Perdita has her own husband, another liver Dalmatian by the name of Prince.
101 Dalmatians (1961)[]
Pongo starts the movie finding bachelor life of him and his "pet" Roger exceptionally dull, so he sets out to try and find a date for both of them. Looking out the window, he spots multiple women walking their dogs, but none of the women seems to be good matches for Roger, nor are any of the dogs dalmatians like himself. However, he finds a lady walking her dalmatian to the park and urges Roger to go on a walk with him. When that doesn't work, he tricks Roger into thinking that more time has passed and finally gets to walk with Roger, with Pongo practically pulling him to the park. Searching for the lady, Pongo passes the women he saw before, but dismisses them yet again. He finally finds the lady sitting on a bench reading while holding her dog. He leads Roger to pass them by, but neither the lady nor her dog react. When Roger sits down with Pongo by the river, Pongo realizes that he will have to be more active and puts his leash in the lady's path, causing Roger and the lady to get entangled in it. When the lady's dog snorts at him, he initially thinks that he ruined everything, but to his surprise, Roger and the lady, Anita actually hit it off, even after falling into the river.
When Roger and Anita get married, Anita's dog Perdita is shown nuzzling with Pongo. Later, the four of them move into a two-story home near the park, along with a housekeeper named Nanny. Perdita is expecting puppies and all seems to be well. But then Perdita hears car tires screeching and tells Pongo that "she" has arrived, "that devil woman". Anita's old friend Cruella de Vil had heard of dalmatian puppies being born and decided to pay Anita a visit to see them. Since Perdita hasn't given birth to them yet, Anita tells Cruella to come back in three weeks. Pongo watches everything, noticing how reluctant Anita is about handing them over and comes back to deliver the good news to Perdita. She however, is inconsolable, fearing the worst about Cruella's intentions with her puppies. She tells Pongo how happy she was when she first realized that they were having puppies, but now wishes that they wouldn't have any at all.
Three weeks pass and Anita and Nanny help Perdita deliver the puppies, with Roger and Pongo waiting in the next room. Anita is counting the puppies as they come and the family is overjoyed at 15 puppies being born. However, Nanny delivers the news of a stillbirth and hands the motionless last puppy over to Roger, with Pongo sadly looking at his stillborn child. However, Roger manages to wake the puppy by rubbing its back and the family celebrates yet again. Said celebration is once again interrupted by the arrival of Cruella, who wants to buy the puppies despite them only having been born just now. Roger however refuses to give her any, enraging Cruella with her swearing revenge. Pongo tells Perdita that Cruella is gone for good.
However, when Roger and Anita take their dogs for a nightly walk, they come back to all of their puppies having been stolen. Roger and Anita waste no time contacting authorities and even the news, but to no avail. Pongo and Perdita realize that it's all up to them and decide to initiate the "Twilight Bark" when Roger and Anita take them on walks the next night. They start howling into the darkness, irritating their owners, who pull them back home. Luckily, the message gets out and a trio of farm animals acting like the military manage to locate the puppies at Hell Hall, Cruella's abandoned old home. Pongo and Perdita are told the news by their friend the Great Dane and they immediately set course for Hell Hall. While one of the farm animals, a friendly tabby cat named Sgt. Tibbs evacuates their puppies along with 84 other ones just in time, Pongo and Perdita storm the Hell Hall and attack Cruella's henchmen, giving their puppies enough time to escape. They later collect the puppies down by a frozen river and Pongo and Perdita tell their puppies to walk on the river to avoid making pawprints. Though they manage to escape detection, the puppies quickly become hungry and tired, so Perdita spots a nearby farm and the cows there are nice enough to allow the puppies to drink from their udders.
Later, they make it to a nearby village called Dinsford, which has a direct line to London, but they realize that Cruella and her henchmen have followed them there. Hiding from Cruella with the help of a black labrador, Pongo notices one of the puppies covering itself in soot and gets the idea to cover his entire family in soot to disguise themselves as labradors, managing to fool Cruella and her henchmen. Getting them to the truck to London in groups, Cruella catches on to them when the icicles start to melt, washing some of the soot away. They all make it onto the truck, but Cruella won't give in and goes completely mad. She tries to ram the truck down the cliff with her car, which would kill all the dogs along with the driver, but her henchmen ram her car off the road by accident. Though they are miraculously unharmed, the dalmatians manage to escape for good.
At Christmas, Roger and Anita believe that Pongo and Perdita had ran away, thus couldn't enjoy the fesitivities, but the two of them arrive with 99 puppies just in time. When Roger and Anita wonder what they should do with so many puppies, they think of using the royalties of Roger's songwriting and buying a house on the countryside. Since Roger calls the idea a "Dalmatian Plantation", it is likely that most of the puppies will be sold.
