ProtoQuake is the het ship between Blues/Proto Man and Tempo/Quake Woman from the Mega Man fandom.

Canon[]

Blues and Tempo first met in issues 34-35 of the Archie Comics Mega Man series, after the events of the Super Adventure Rockman adaptation. Tempo apparently recognized Blues and questioned whether that was indeed his name. Having rejected this identity, Blues instead asserts that he is “Break Man.” When Tempo questions whether he is DLN-000, Blues reluctantly acknowledges this to be the case.

Blues then gets to his reason for visiting: he wants to know why Tempo remains with her creator, Dr. Lalinde. Knowing that Lalinde previously removed Tempo’s personality, and has only recently restored it, he questions why Tempo hasn’t left her to carve out an identity for herself. Guessing that this is what Blues has attempted to do, Tempo questions “What identity is ‘Break Man’?” Stuck for an answer, Blues turns the conversation back to Tempo’s-to him-inexplicable trust in a woman he feels is the definition of untrustworthy.

In response, Tempo leads Blues inside Dr. Lalinde’s home. She then explains that, after restoring her personality, Dr. Lalinde gave her video recordings from before the accident that led to Lalinde removing Tempo’s personality. After viewing one of these, Blues argues that Tempo is totally different from how she used to be. He points to this as evidence that Lalinde didn’t actually restore Tempo’s personality.

Tempo, however, points out that her original personality doubtless would have been altered regardless as a result of her accident. She then questions whether Blues is the same as he was when he was first built. Once again refusing to acknowledge that their conversation has anything to do with him, Blues asks how Tempo can trust Lalinde. Tempo responds that, having seen Lalinde’s remorse and efforts to make amends, she has chosen to forgive and trust her.

Blues finds this difficult to accept, but is then taken aback when Tempo asks whether he would wish to be forgiven for what he did to Roll. She admits to having been upset by the report of his actions, and then asks what he has done to make up for them. Angrily, Blues retorts that he doesn’t need forgiveness, nor does he intend to forgive anyone else. Tempo then asks whether he intends to be alone, something he claims to be fine with.

However, Tempo questions how Blues is able to maintain himself, and how he found out about her and Lalinde in the first place. Blues admits to having seen footage of them on the news, and to having received help. However, he angrily asserts that he is aware Dr. Light and Dr. Lalinde spoke about reprogramming him. Blues accuses Tempo of not giving him any answers, but Tempo replies that she has responded to all his questions, just not in a way he’s liked.

When Blues says that she shouldn’t forgive Lalinde for changing who she was, Tempo replies that she has already done so for the sake of moving forward. Despite Blues telling her not to make the conversation about him, she notes that Dr. Light never actually did anything to change him. Tempo wonders whether Blues is angry because Light hasn’t done anything requiring forgiveness. Blues angrily retorts that Dr. Light replaced him, smashing a photograph and prompting Dr. Lalinde to intervene. Blues then departs, leaving Tempo and her creator alone.

The pair later meet again in issue #54, when Blues once again visits Lalinde’s home. Tempo is less than thrilled to see him, a fact he comments on as “progress.” Blues’ remark leave her blushing and embarrassed, and Blues apologizes both for that and his discourtesy on his last visit. Tempo is quick to retort that his actions at their last meeting don’t compare to burning down Light Labs.

Blues, stammering, denies that he played any part in the incident and is then overcome with frustration. Apologizing again for showing up unannounced, he confesses that Tempo is the only individual he’s spoken with about “anything!” Seeing his obvious distress, and moved by it, Tempo stops him when he gets up to leave. She promises to listen to what he has to say, reiterating it when he tries to protest.

Finally, Blues notes that, unlike later Robot Masters, he was never given a specific purpose. As such, he admits fearing Dr. Light would change who he was, which led to him leaving his creator. But having been so determined to preserve his identity, Blues now feels like he’s lost it. He admits the wrongness of his past behavior, and how he now feels both trapped and as though he’s dangerous to everyone.

Blues makes particular note of his antagonism of Mega Man, which led to both Roll being hurt, and Light Labs being destroyed. Seeing Blues’ shame over how he’s treated his “brother”, Tempo smiles and lays a comforting hand on his shoulder. When she mentions hearing that Blues rescued Mega Man from Wily’s castle, Blues notes that it’s not enough to fully make up for his misdeeds. Tempo agrees, but feels he has made a beginning, and suggests that going home is the next step he should take. Blues starts to protest, but Tempo assures him that it’s an option for him, however difficult it might be.

The pair are then rudely interrupted and startled by Tempo’s own “sister”, Vesper Woman. After denying Vesper Woman’s accusation that Blues is her boyfriend, she introduces her sister to him and explains how and why she was created. In the process, Vesper Woman determines that Blues is “as bad as [Tempo] is!”
