Purple Mango is the familyship between Purple and King Orange from the Animator vs. Animation fandom.
Canon[]
After seemingly making peace with the main characters, Purple was reintroduced in the episode "Parkour" of the third season of the AvM Shorts, trapping the five main stick figures in a seemingly harmless game of parkour under the command of a previously unseen tall orange stick figure. Purple bows to his commander, showing that he enacted step one of their plan. However, Green escapes and witnesses them discuss their plan of having Purple return to the main characters' home to steal the Minecraft Game Icon in hopes of inserting it into the commander's staff to create a destructive vortex. Despite his Piglin minions informing him about Green's escape, the King still insists that Purple follow through with his part of the plan after punishing the informant. However, when Green confronts Purple over it, King Orange interferes and keeps Green suspended in midair to allow Purple to escape, then locks Green in a dungeon with electrified bars to prevent him bothering them any further.
What King Orange did not expect is that two other stick figures managed to find a way to teleport into another server using King Orange's own programming, then found a way back home just as Purple tried to steal the Game Icon. Meanwhile, Green found a way to escape and found out that King Orange was trying to subdue Blue and Yellow, both parties simultaneously ended up fighting King Orange and Purple in different dimensions. Just as the three manage to weaken King Orange, Purple managed to steal the Game Icon, causing all of the stick figures to be stripped of the powers the game gave them and all of their creations, including the Nether Portal that got them there in the first place, to be erased. When King Orange manages to get a hold of the Game Icon and attaches it to his staff to unleash its destructive power, Purple wanted to try it as well. To his surprise, King Orange attacks him, wanting to keep the power for himself. Purple remains loyal to him inspite of this and commands his Piglin minions to fight the main characters. While the Second Coming ends up fighting King Orange by having taken another Game Icon from another player, the other four turn the tides against Purple by slaughtering the King's army. Eventually, Green and Yellow capture Purple, who calls for King Orange to help him, but the King ends up ignoring him. This causes Purple to finally realize that the King only used him, which causes him to flee into one of the Nether Portal's created by the Second Coming. The Second Coming ends up momentarily defeating King Orange, but his friends got scattered across the dimensions in the battle and he himself ended up falling into one of his own portals after having dropped his Game Icon during the fight.
In a "Note Block Universe" where all the living creatures communicate by singing, Green manages to catch up to Purple, who opens up about his life story, explaining why he was loyal to King Orange: Purple's own father was a fighter and disappointed in him for being weak, his father threatening her when she interfered and ultimately abandoning the family caused his mother to pass away from grief. Left with nobody to guide him, Purple tried to reconnect with his father by taking control over others to try and make him proud. However, in order to achieve success, Purple had betrayed the only friends he had ever made. But then he met King Orange and saw trying to make him proud as a way of coping with his father abandoning him. He considered being betrayed by King Orange a failure and started weeping as he realized that he himself wasn't a good person after all. Green however encourages him to still try and fix his mistakes, saying he and his friends don't care whether he had done good or bad. Realizing that it's not too late to stop King Orange from destroying the game, Purple flies with Green back to the King's lair and punches the staff out of King Orange's hands.
It is then revealed how King Orange had met Purple: Having lost his son to a fully immersive simulation of the game, that crashed erasing him from existence, King Orange swore to learn the ins and outs of the game to find a way to destroy it for good. Having found out about the Second Coming and his friends having access to the game through their viral video, he hangs up wanted posters for them. Purple ends up being one of the people who reports that he knows them personally and knows exactly how to get to them. So Orange immediately included him in his plans, having already built the command staff and used it to infiltrate a Nether Fortress and subdue the resident Piglins by declaring himself King.
Fast-forward to the present, Purple uses the King's staff to turn the tides in favor of the Second Coming and his allies. King Orange seeing Purple use his staff does not hesitate in trying to get it back, helped by Purple struggling to undo the massive black hole King Orange had already created. When King Orange manages to fight off all the main heroes, Purple does not hesitate to outright harm King Orange when he gets close to his staff. As the fight continues, King Orange only strengthens the black hole to even extend towards the other dimensions, Purple stands himself right into the path of the staff's beam in hopes of stopping it, but only gets annihilated. This however causes King Orange to notice parallels between Purple dying and his own son's death. The more he thinks about it, the more King Orange notices similarities between Purple and his son. Initially acting dismissive towards these memories, he eventually realized that he was making a huge mistake and drops his staff running to try and save Purple. But just before King Orange could reach him, Purple disintegrates as he tries to pull him to safety. King Orange soon meets the same fate, ending up in a void that resembles his house before he became King. He sees the walls being drawn on by invisible hands, depicting the scene of him losing his son. But then he sees himself trying to destroy the game, lashing out against the innocent creatures inside and the other stick figures just playing the game until the drawing of his son runs away from the drawing depicting him. The real King Orange is horrified at the scene, which only intensifies as his drawn self starts using the body of his son to try and destroy the game with it. The real King Orange starts punching the wall to stop taunting him, but before he breaks through the wall, the drawing of his son turns purple. He sees Purple sitting at the scene where his mother died, sad and alone. But then Purple sees his father run up to him, only to find his father having turned into King Orange as he embraces him, with Purple returning the embrace.
Meanwhile, the five heroes managed to find a way to reverse the black hole by putting the two Minecraft icons back into their proper places, restoring the natural order of the game. With the game restoring itself, the two stick figures, who now regard each other as father and son, are restored with it. Orange ends up crowning Purple, but Purple had bad experiences with being royalty and passes the crown to one of Red's pet pigs instead. After embracing his friends, Purple is contend to return to his world of origin with his new father. The third season ends with Orange taking Purple to the playground he and his son loved to visit when the latter was still alive.
Fanon[]
Prior to the exact nature of their relationship being revealed, many fans saw the relationship between Purple and King Orange as strictly professional and didn't mind the idea of shipping them, even if the ship isn't shown to be healthy. After "The King" was released, the idea of shipping them romantically was unthinkable and many fans quickly moved on to depicting them as father and son. In fact, the platonic tag for them became the most popular tag for the series on AO3 in record speed.
