RabIris is the het ship between Rab Streambattle and Iris Streambattle from the Redwall fandom.
Canon[]
Rab and Iris Streambattle are mated otters featured in the novel The Bellmaker. Both were members of the guard of Castle Floret, from which their friend Gael Squirrelking ruled over all of Southsward. However, after Gael invited Urgan Nagru the Foxwolf into the castle, he refused to heed Rab’s warnings about the villain. As such, Rab and the guard, including Iris, departed Floret.
Rab later launched a mission to rescue Gael and his family after Foxwolf seized control of Floret. Iris joined him, and the two would discuss the approach of pursuers as the escapees were nearing their position. On Rab’s orders, Iris and the others joined him in laying down covering fire. Later, Iris would take charge of the escapees while Rab remained behind to hold off the pursuit. Rab urged his mate to depart, and Iris held back tears as she watched Rab preparing for what seemed sure to be a fatal last stand.
Greenbeck, one of Iris’ subordinates, later noted that Iris kept hope in spite of being unsure of Rab’s ultimate fate. Iris would later express the belief that Rab was dead, and the hope that the enemy paid dearly for it. She also pled with Queen Serena, Gael’s wife, to leave Southsward as Rab had wished. Iris would later be moved to tears again when it appeared that several allies had sacrificed themselves in a manner similar to Rab.
Unbeknownst to Iris, Rab still lived, but had suffered grievous wounds and was now both mute and amnesiac. He and Muta, a badger, had become silent partners in a war against the Foxwolf. Upon encountering him, the mousemaid Mariel attempted to rouse Rab’s memories by mentioning Iris. Sadly, this was of no avail.
Mariel, Rab, and Muta managed to seize Floret’s gatehouse, and Mariel signaled Iris and their other allies. Observing their manipulation of the drawbridge, Iris concluded that Mariel must have help. Upon invading Floret later, Iris saw Rab and began fighting her way towards him, screaming his name in joy. Rab, in turn, was finally brought back to himself by his mate’s voice. He promptly yelled out to Iris, his already impressive ferocity increasing as he fought to reach her.
The two otters and their friends fought together throughout the rest of the Battle for Southsward. Later, during the victory celebrations, they sat together with Serena and observed Muta playing with Gael and Serena’s son Truffen. The three friends commented on the sight, with Rab in particular noting Muta’s happiness in response to an inquiry by Iris.
Rab and his relationship with Iris are also covered in the companion guide Tribes of Redwall Otters. The novel High Rhulain also features otters of the Streambattle clan, though their exact relation to Rab and Iris is unclear.
Fanon[]
RabIris, though an official pairing in the Redwall series, is less prominent than some others. The Bellmaker has not been adapted in animation like a number of works in the series, and so RabIris has only been depicted in print.
There are 2 works tagged for the pairing on AO3.
