YES! Fuck you, Alastor! Ahahaha! THIS IS BETTER THAN SEX!
—Vox’s excited statement after seeing Adam injure Alastor (The Show Must Go On)

RadioStatic is the slash ship between Alastor and Vox from the Hazbin Hotel fandom.

Canon[]

Alastor and Vox's relationship has always been very complicated, as the two have been in a kind of feud, harboring markedly different opinions about the media. Apart from that, both personalities contrast with each other: Alastor is a somewhat calmer individual who seeks negotiation and peaceful agreement, while Vox is usually driven by delusions of standing out in front of an audience, often taking advantage of his television platform to mock Alastor, as depicted in the prequel comic of the latter character.

In the comic "The Radio Demon," Alastor strolls through the streets, eventually reaching a display of televisions, all showcasing products endorsed and sold by Vox. Observing alongside some demons, Alastor comments that "there's really nothing good on these days." The nearby demons run from Alastor in fear, so Vox seizes the opportunity to hijack the signal, attempting to intimidate Alastor, but the latter casually dismisses him with a shrug. As he continues his walk, Alastor begins to express his displeasure at having to see Vox, insulting him in a hushed voice. However, his attention is diverted when he comes across a newly opened butcher shop, causing him to cease his thoughts about the TV demon.

In the episode "Radio Killed the Video Star," the competition between these two is intense. When Vox becomes upset at seeing Alastor emerge after a long absence, and seeing he is now interacting with the princess of Hell, he decides to publicly mock him on television with a song, hurling insults and humiliating him to dissuade him from reappearing. Seeing Vox's broadcast from across the street, Alastor starts his own and sings back in response, taunting him during the live show in a more sophisticated manner, refraining from direct attacks or profanity, unlike Vox, mentioning that he is powerless without the other Vee's and even asked him to join them to which he declined. To this, Vox starts losing his temper. Ultimately, when Vox short-circuits the city by accident in a fit of rage, Alastor takes his chance, so he warns him that he will now wish he had stayed gone by the radio, revealing his demonic form as he smiles, and for the first time amid all the turmoil, Alastor resorts to direct threats against Vox. At the end, Vox is clearly shocked, finally giving up and seemingly admitting that defeat.

While Vox and Alastor exhibit completely different personalities and characters, they share common parallels. Vox, representing television media, is flamboyant and seeks attention, using direct confrontation to entertain and promote products. In contrast, Alastor, associated with radio media, maintains a calmer and more reserved demeanor, countering Vox's actions with sophisticated wit, and in rare situations, he resourses to direct attacks. Vox's flashy style appeals to those who enjoy bold characters, while Alastor's mysterious charm attracts fans who appreciate a more reserved personality. Additionally, Vox symbolizes technology and modern media, while Alastor, known as "The Radio Demon," brings a vintage and classic vibe to the narrative.

Fanon[]

This ship has gained popularity within the Hazbin Hotel community, and although it is by far one of the most popular ships for Alastor, it is the second most popular for Vox. The relationship between these two characters has intrigued many fans who have eagerly anticipated seeing it unfold on screen. This interest stems from the revelation in the comic that Vox is one of the few capable of provoking Alastor's temper to the point of swearing, making him the first one to achieve this.

The two are frequently compared as if engaged in a competition, with one representing television media and the other radio. Despite not directly attacking each other, it's evident that they support one another to bolster their respective products, akin to two companies looking for higher revenue.

The relationship between Vox and Alastor seems to be marked by tension, rivalry, and a degree of mutual disdain. Vox appears to take pleasure in mocking and attempting to intimidate Alastor, especially through his television broadcasts. Alastor, on the other hand, remains relatively calm and indifferent in the face of Vox's attempts to provoke him. Vox, literally a television, uses everything in his way for video platforms and cable programs, while Alastor uses only radio, and as it was stated in the first episode of Hazbin Hotel, he really hates cameras and all related to modern technology, to the point where he gets enraged for being recorded.

Despite the rivalry, there is a level of interdependence, with both characters indirectly supporting each other by promoting their respective products. The fact that Vox is one of the few capable of breaking Alastor's temper adds an intriguing layer to their relationship, as fans are drawn to the complexity of their interactions. The scene with Alastor complaining about having to see Vox and then being distracted by a butcher shop suggests that, while there is animosity between them, Alastor may find ways to divert his attention and maintain his composure. Overall, the relationship between Vox and Alastor appears multifaceted and filled with nuances that contribute to the intrigue surrounding their interactions.

While their on-screen interactions have been limited thus far, the fandom for this ship gained momentum after episode two featured a Song Battle between the two characters.

The ship has also gained a large fanbase who specifically enjoy it as a one-sided, unrequited ship by the name of "RadioSilence" or "OneWayBroadcast" where only Vox is into Alastor. Most fans of this interpretation enjoy it because they believe it works better with Alastor's aroace identity, others may choose this interpretation because they ship Alastor with Lucifer or Rosie instead.

The most popular fanfic for the ship is "Radio Healed the Video Star" by Aspiring_Forest_Witch. First published around 2022-03-05 which was before when the series was finally released, during the time when only the pilot, music videos, tumblr, (outdated) Instagram accounts, and comics were there to go off on. Summary of the fic is "Alastor comes across an unconscious and battered Vox while out on one of his strolls. He feels compelled to bring him back to the hotel."

Vox's crash screen seen in Stayed Gone that appears to be the colors of the bisexual pride flag.

  • Vox is shown to be one of the only ones capable of getting Alastor to swear, the others being Lucifer and Adam.
  • Vox has a tea mug that says "Fuck Alastor".
  • It is believed to say that Alastor and Vox are "kismesises".
    • Kismesis can be defined as someone that you hate, but as opposed to platonic hatred, those involved in a kismesissitude detest each other, but would be lost without their presence, making life feel emptier.
  • Vox and Alastor do not get along due to their opposing views on technology, with Alastor disliking anything invented after his death in the 1930s, and Vox embracing new technology.[1]
  • The two were implied to have been friends at some point twice, first at the end of the episode "Radio Killed the Video Star", when Alastor mockingly calls Vox "ol' pal", and later in "The Show Must Go On" when a ripped picture of them, seemingly happy, can be seen on a table.
  • Some interesting facts about their song:
    • Vox sings "Top of the hour, and we're discussing a certain has-been". Hazbin is a play on words for "has-been". Vox may be referring to not only Alastor, but to the hotel as well.
    • Vox also says "We pivoted to video, now his medium is getting bloody rare". Alastor is an anthropomorphic deer, and in this scene Vox holds up a cut of venison, making a play on the term "medium-rare".
    • At the end, Alastor repeats Vox’s earlier line of "I'm gonna make you wish that you'd stayed gone", Alastor turns it back on Vox saying "I'm gonna make you wish that I'd stayed gone" as a warning (and a threat).
    • Earlier, Vox said "turn the TV on", starting his broadcast. Here, Alastor is urging listeners to tune in for future updates. While "tune on in" can also refer to TV, it’s more commonly used to refer to audio mediums.
    • During the scene where Vox sings the line "You old-timey prick!", a split second frame shows his face glitch with the colors of the bisexual flag. With the context of Vox glitching out because of Alastor, it has potential canonical implications.
