Manga

Ami tells Usagi of a very pretty girl that she sees on her bus ride home. Intrigued, she joins Ami and is taken aback when she sees her. She is so infatuated, that she gets off when the girl does. Luna asks her if you should be really doing this, but Usagi says the girl is so pretty and she has time to kill, with hearts in her eyes. Usagi loses sight of the girl, and gets angry at Luna for it. When Usagi walks into Hikawa Shrine, some crows attack her, causing the girl, Rei, to come out and use a demon ward on her, causing her to collapse. Rei apologizes. Usagi is a little surprised, but since she is such a pretty girl she doesn't mind.

Later Rei attempts a fire reading to what is behind the mysterious disappearing buses. She sees a vision of Usagi being strangled, and becomes concerned that Usagi may be in danger. Soon Rei is captured by Jadeite, so Sailor Moon uses her tiara to free her. Rei awakens as Sailor Mars, and finishes off Jadeite. Usagi is elated that Rei is a Sailor Guardian and so happy they found her. Afterwards, the two end up becoming close friends.

90s Anime

Usagi visits Hikawa Shrine with Naru to buy an amulet. After Rei appears to chastise her Grandpa for hitting on the girls, Usagi remarks that she looks so cool and pretty, while blushing. Usagi also says that she wouldn't mind being a shrine maiden part-time, with a big grin on her face. Rei then senses an unusual aura and slaps a demon ward on Usagi's forehead, causing her to faint. Rei sheepishly says that's not what was supposed to happen. Rei gets Usagi a place to rest, and when she awakens, apologizes.

The next day, Usagi visits Rei again and tells her she saw the Demon 6:00 bus. Rei immediately misinterprets that as an accusation toward her and her Grandpa and asks Usagi to leave. Usagi says she's sorry and tells her she just wanted to be friends. Usagi then makes it on the Demon bus to investigate, and travels to another dimension by the enemy. Rei also gets sucked into a black hole to the same place as Usagi. Usagi transforms and saves Rei from the monster holding her captive. After Rei awakens as Sailor Mars and things are resolved, the two become friends and hang out together.

Rei quickly becomes interested in Mamoru and manages to go on a date with him. Usagi decides Rei shouldn't be with Mamoru, that it's dangerous, so she must follow them, although Luna knows Usagi is jealous.

The 5 Senshi decide to go to a ski resort for a vacation. Usagi is interested in the Moon Princess Contest, which Rei taunts whether she'll even be good enough for it. This sparks Usagi and she confidently exclaims she can do the course. Rei also participates, as she has very good skiing ability. At the start gun, Rei zooms off, but Usagi stalls nervously, and is sent flying down the slope by a push from Yuuichirou. Since the Contest was a trap devised by the Dark Kingdom, the other skiers wipe out until only Rei and Usagi are left. Usagi eventually passes Rei, who then takes that as a challenge to beat her. The enemy appears, and forces them to ski into a crevice, and then a dead-end. While they're trapped in there, Usagi brings out Mamoru's music box to cheer her up. She then remembers Rei likes Mamoru and apologises. Rei says it's okay, because she's over it now. She knows that it was only ever a one-sided crush, and Mamoru loves Usagi. She won't chase after Mamoru because she knows the two of them are meant for each other.

Later Usagi convinces her friends to go along with her plan of them pretending to fight in order for the Dark Kingdom to take interest and take her to their lair so she can save Mamoru. Usagi complains that Rei is too harsh on her, but Rei retorts that they have to make it look believable. When the night comes for Sailor Moon to meet with Kunzite, the others wait in the bushes. Usagi is quickly attacked and choked by a youma, and the Senshi argue over whether to go and save her yet. Mars is the most set in staying put, which makes the other three question if maybe she actually hates Usagi. Rei gets angry and tells them that if she did, she wouldn't have held onto Usagi's most important item, the Moon Stick and Silver Crystal for her.

When the Sailor Senshi are preparing to fight the Dark Kingdom at the North Pole, Usagi tells Rei she should kiss Yuuichirou before they leave, just in case. Rei says nothing bad will happen to them, but when they get there, the Senshi are picked off one-by-one by Queen Beryl's DD Girls. After every death Rei tells Usagi she can't cry, and she has to be strong. Eventually it is only Rei left, and she sees the Youma she must fight. Usagi cries in her arms because she doesn't want Rei to die. Rei says she never said she's going to die, anyway, and promises to take care of the monster real quick. Rei is trapped in an ice chamber by one, but is able to kill it. The second one brings out her presumably dead body and Usagi watches blankly. Rei isn't done yet, though, and with her last strength, she uses Fire Soul and kills the last one.

One day Rei has a nightmare of the world falling to ruin, including the Sailor Senshi crumbling to dust. Rei, whose mind is on what she dreamed, doesn't look where she's going and walks right into Usagi, hurting both their heads. They take turns rinsing their foreheads on an outside tap. As Rei walks away, she asks Usagi if she has any dreams. The two then lean against a railing and talk together.

90s Anime

• Episode 10: When seeing Rei for the first time, Usagi calls her cool and pretty while blushing. Immediately, Usagi follows up on her comment on Rei by saying, "So she's a shrine maiden, I wouldn't mind doing that part-time." Usagi giggles afterward, and her friends and Luna are surprised at how blatantly she says her comment about Rei.
• Episode 11: When the group splits up to investigate, Luna puts Usagi with Rei.
• Episode 12: Rei wins two tickets to a luxury romantic cruise, so Usagi asks if she can go with her.
• Episode 15: Usagi is concerned about Rei dating a college student (Mamoru) because she sees it as an improper relationship, which she learns from her student handbook. She follows Rei in secret to see if she is okay.
• Episode 20: Usagi seems to tend next to or behind Rei whenever she is scared. Usagi later holds on to Rei a few times after being scared again. Rei doesn't seem to object to Usagi while doing so.
• Episode 24: Sailor Mars coats Sailor Moon's Moon Tiara Action with her Fire Soul to finish off the enemy of the episode.
• Episode 25: When Makoto meets friends of Usagi and sees Usagi and Rei starting an argument because Usagi called her a mean friend, she states they get along so well, much to their surprise/denial. Makoto furthers this by saying the more they argue, the closer they are. Once again, they are surprised by this notion before Ami makes a comment that is a good way of summing up their dynamic, which causes them to stick their tongues out toward each other.
• Episode 30: Usagi becomes sad after she and Rei fall apart, mainly because of Usagi's nosy behavior and acting upon it. Usagi decides to make it to Rei by giving her rice cakes. Near the end of the episode, the two rekindle their friendship. After a short moment of peace, they return to their usual antics. During this, Usagi is shown being happy about their relationship returning to normal while Rei is chasing her because Usagi is teasing her for liking Yuichiro.
• Episode 38: Rei saves Usagi before she gets crushed by ravines of snow. Rei also shows that she is okay with the love of Usagi for Mamoru. She supports and wants them to be happy with each other. If not, Rei says she will punish Usagi in the same way when Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon and says her catchphrase. Usagi seems appreciative afterward and nods her head in agreement. Unfortunately, after Usagi mentions their friendship moment to others, Rei returns to her mean ways and dismisses their friendship, causing Usagi to whine and cry about Rei being so mean to her once again.
• Episode 43: When Sailor Jupiter/Makoto confronts Rei for not caring about Usagi, Rei/Sailor Mars reveals that she has Usagi’s Moon Stick and states that she would not have this if she did not care about Usagi. Afterward, seeing Usagi/Sailor Moon potentially close to her demise, she was first to attack to save her.
• Episode 45: Rei reveals to Usagi that she likes and has fun arguing with her all this time before she goes off to fight, to get caught and fail seemingly almost immediately. Fortunately, Rei manages to get back up immediately and destroys the other DD girls with more noticeable aggressiveness of power before they get to Sailor Moon. Afterwards Rei succumbed to her injuries.
• Episode 48: Sailor Mars jumps up to save Sailor Moon. Afterward, she supports Sailor Moon with her arm while she is on the ground.
• Episode 51: Rei was the loudest person screaming for Usagi after seeing her disappearance.
• Episode 54: Sometime after the rehearsal, Usagi comments on the song that Rei sings being lovely. Rei appears blushing. Usagi then says that Rei is a super hard worker. Afterward, Rei continues to blush and lightly laugh before saying Usagi can learn hard work from her, which ensures light banter from Usagi.
• Episode 60: When Rei examines the family photos of Chibiusa to see if there is an evil aura surrounding it and concludes there is not any, she decides to create false tension only to poke a comment at Usagi about her kimono making her butt look big. Usagi starts whining at Rei for playing around, and Rei is playful and amused at the event.
• Episode 63: Usagi says Rei is really cool (in the original Japanese dub), then Rei spills hot water and burns herself. Minako asks what's wrong, but Rei doesn't answer. Also, Sailor Mars comforts Sailor Moon after Tuxedo Mask walks off by telling her he still cares about her. Sailor Moon sadly nods her head afterwards.
• Episode 65: When Rei sees Chibiusa, she asks what happened to Usagi, Chibiusa rudely says to forget her. Rei comes to the defense of Usagi and says that Usagi is trying her best in her own way.
• Episode 69: Sailor Mars is one of the most emotional and frantic sailor guardians when seeing Sailor Moon potentially dying once again. Sailor Mars is trying to wake up Sailor Moon by checking, tapping, or even desperately slapping her face for a result.
• Episode 72: Once again, Makoto mentions that the more arguing, the closer you are when referring to the reformed Spectre Sisters fighting. Finishing her comment, Rei quintessentially starts an argument to annoy Usagi. Usagi starts using sarcasm in response to a comment Rei made about herself. Rei seems to be enjoying it by smirking until Usagi gets angry, and Rei sticks her tongue out at her.
• Episode 83: There is a brief scene of Rei asking when about the year, month, and date Chibiusa was born after the revealment that Chibiusa is the future daughter of Usagi and Mamoru. (Considering Rei is blushing for no suitable reason and has slightly more frantic behavior than usual, some fans conclude this moment as a brief of jealousy, concern, or interest from Rei.)
• Episode 86: Rei comforts Usagi after worrying about the state of Chibiusa and ensures that everything will be okay. She closely nuzzles her head against Usagi. Usagi is surprised by this, and after more assurance from Rei, they both look into each other eyes for a while and blush. Afterward, Usagi says Rei is right and thanks her.
• Episode 90 Moment 1: After, Rei is startled by a bad dream, and when she wakes up, she is partly annoyed by the snoring from Usagi. When the Sailor Guardians ask Rei about her dream, she gently picks up Usagi's head from the table while continuing to speak about her dream. Usagi wakes up shortly.
• Episode 90 Moment 2: After Rei has a vision from her bad dream, she decides to talk with Usagi to clear her mind of things. During the conversation, Usagi asks Rei about her future. Rei starts listing off until stopping and blushing, then looks at Usagi only to smack her back while laughing. Rei says she will not reveal her idea of marriage, only accidentally do it. Afterward, Rei brings Usagi to marry Mamoru only for Usagi to blush and laugh while Rei brings up the thought.
• Episode 90 Moment 3: After the conversation, Usagi has an inner monologue about her thoughts on Rei. Usagi is aware Rei does say mean things, but she knows that Rei does care. Usagi seems appreciative and thanks Rei in her mind.
• Episode 90 Moment 4: Usagi tries to save Rei when she sees her in danger but fails. After Rei's pure heart is stolen, Usagi, who is currently crying, yells at them to give back Rei's heart.
• Episode 90 Moment 5: After being free, Usagi runs to Rei's unconscious body, holds her hand, and starts begging Rei to wake up. After Rei is restored, Usagi starts crying again and says that Rei is back to her normal mean-old self. Afterward, Usagi cries and asks Rei a couple of questions filled with worried thoughts while Rei calmly reassures Usagi that she is okay.
• Episode 95: When Usagi immediately thinks of Rei as someone she can rely on for all romance problems and goes over to her place.
• Episode 99: Usagi confronts Rei to confess and supports her love for Yuichiro by giving her generous evidence, then Usagi slaps Rei in the face and tells her to see him.
• Episode 103: Usagi starts teasing Rei for volunteering for the festival because she knows Rei loves putting on a show. Usagi starts blushing and giggles at the thought while she still doubles down on Rei until Rei blushes in embarrassment and gets angry.
• Episode 126: Rei is the first person to see Usagi down and tell her that it is not her fault and that she tried everything she could. After hearing that, Usagi turns her head, looks at her team, and looks slightly more content.
• Episode 127: After a fight, Rei offers Usagi a bandage after looking at her hands, which were bleeding after stitching her present for Chibiusa. During the offer, Usagi appears curiously surprised at the gesture. Rei wraps the bandage around her hand. During the process, Usagi is smiling. Also, Chibiusa comments on the friendship of Rei and Usagi, seeing that no matter how much they fight, they are always close friends. After saying this, Rei gives Usagi a slight head knock, and they both laugh afterward.
• Episode 136: After when Rei is free from Tiger's Eye, Sailor Moon comes to save her before she falls to the ground. Sailor Moon seems happy with Rei being okay.
• Episode 154: Rei and Usagi in the background are both visibly shown holding each other in a light hug.
• Episode 162: After seeing Usagi needs a moment with a very ill Mamoru, Rei leaves the room and makes others leave.
• Episode 163: Rei tries to help Sailor Moon off the ground after Zirconia steals Chibiusa.

• Episode 176: Rei randomly shows up and scolds Usagi to go home and study so she won't fail the makeup test. She comedically pulls Usagi by her ear, and Usagi starts whining.
• Episode 189: Rei gives Usagi advice for confidence and reassurance of her current situation relating to Seiya.
• Episode 193: Rei quickly gets offended after Yaten calls Usagi a witch.
• Episode 194 Moment 1: A whistle designed for Usagi to call Rei, but she accidentally blows it without knowing its purpose. Afterward, Rei immediately ran towards Usagi at lightning speed.
• Episode 194 Moment 2: Also, across the episode, Rei gets upset and frantic after hearing that Usagi isn't with Makoto, Ami, or Minako. Rei is persistent in saying that Usagi needs protection.
• Episode 195: Rei comes to Usagi's Home to confront Usagi's situation with her feelings for Seiya and Mamoru. Also, Rei gets concerned when she realizes that Usagi hasn't heard Mamoru in months.
• Episode 196: Sailor Mars protects Sailor Moon before she gets hit by a beam from Galaxia. Afterward, Sailor Mars starts to fade away, Sailor Moon gets emotional only for Sailor Mars to start comforting Sailor Moon, then Sailor Moon tells Sailor Mars about their promise of being together to the very end and starts begging her not to leave her. Sailor Mars reassured Sailor Moon that she still had Mamoru left. Afterward, Sailor Mars started crying and apologizing to Sailor Moon for failing to protect her. Sailor Mars fades away, but before she fades away completely, Sailor Moon grabs the last piece of Sailor Mars's energy and clutches it in her hand. Afterward, Sailor Moon loses it, screams, and demands to bring all Sailor Guardians back to her. (She mentioned Sailor Mars as the first to return while screaming.)
• Episode 197: Sailor Moon emphasizes Mamoru and Rei by their names after recollecting the recent events.
• Episode 200/Finale: After the battle is finished, Usagi starts breaking down and claiming to herself that she isn't strong and now lonely, until she hears Sailor Mars's voice saying "You're not alone". Afterward, all the Sailor Guardians and Mamoru return, and once again, Sailor Mars says "You're not alone." Also, within the final credits during a montage, Rei is shown to be cheerful playing with Usagi by pulling her cheeks.

90s Movies

• Sailor Moon R Movie: Sailor Mars reminded Usagi that the mission is also to help Mamoru. Sailor Mars holds Sailor Moon's shoulder. Afterward, Sailor Moon nods her head and blushes.
• Sailor Moon R Movie: Rei protects Usagi by throwing her out of the way before the Dahlias catch her.
• Sailor Moon R Movie: Once again, Sailor Moon almost potentially dies, and Sailor Mars is the most frantic one to wake her up by shaking her.
• Sailor Moon R Movie: After Sailor Moon is revived, Sailor Mars immediately hugs her while she is crying.

90s Video Games

• Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon: In the 1995 Sailor Moon Arcade Game: Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon, there is an unused cutscene ending of Sailor Mars being jealous of seeing Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask about to kiss, and she looks away. Sailor Moon notices before she kisses Tuxedo Mask, she runs up to Sailor Mars and hugs her, and Sailor Mars hugs back while looking sad.

Fanon

The ship sailed as a result of the two being main characters, spending a vast amount of time together and canonically being good friends and caring a lot about each other.

Rei and Usagi's constant bickering also intrigued the shippers. Especially in the anime, where their rivalry was much more heated. Their bond was made even stronger with the underlying respect and commitment to protect Usagi that Rei had. Even though they fight all the time, that's what good friends do and they understand each other. Fans believe that Usagi entrusted her Moon Stick to Rei because she would be the least likely to give in if Usagi was endangered during their plan.

ReiUsa is a fairly popular ship in the fandom. It rivals the ships Reinako, Reideite, SeiUsa and MamoUsa. On AO3, it is both Usagi's and Rei's 3rd most popular ship.
