Canon[]
Tokyo Mew Mew (2002)[]
Lettuce and Pie were natural enemies. Pie was a member of an alien race dedicated to reclaiming the earth and destroying humanity in retaliation for them pollution the earth. Meanwhile, Lettuce was a mew mew, a person with the ability to transform into a magical girl with the traits of the finless porpoise to protect humanity from its threats. Pie began to attack the mew mews regularly after the five of them had already formed their team, and he and Lettuce frequently fought on the battlefield.
Lettuce began to voice that she did not like to fight and frequently questioned Pie's motives and the necessity of violence on the battlefield. Pie would respond that their battles were destiny, that he was fulfilling his mission, and that humanity and his race could not coexist. However, during the final battle with Deep Blue, when an explosion was endangering the mew mews, Pie arrived to save them. He decided to sacrifice himself to save the mews and smiled at Lettuce before he was killed, which caused her to tear up. Pie was later revived when Mew Ichigo used the Mew Aqua to undo Deep Blue's damage, and he returned to his home planet. However, in the manga Tokyo Mew Mew 2020 Re-Turn, Pie and the other aliens returned to the earth and started to work at Cafe Mew Mew, where Lettuce also worked.
Tokyo Mew Mew New[]
As with the previous anime, Pie and Lettuce started as enemies. Pie was the member of an alien race that was forced to evacuate earth and needed to reclaim it as the surface of their new planet was uninhabitable, and they wanted to exact revenge on humanity for polluting the planet. Lettuce was a mew mew, a human who could transform into a magical girl infuse with the DNA of a finless porpoise, and it was her job to protect humanity from the aliens. Lettuce and Pie frequently fought each other on the battlefield.
Lettuce fought against Pie during the final battle with Deep Blue, the aliens' leader. Lettuce managed to defeat Pie and they both passed out due to exhaustion. Ichigo and Masaya later used Mew Aqua to purify the surface of the aliens' home world, so they no longer needed to conquer the earth. Pie and the other aliens said their goodbyes to the mews before returning to their home. Lettuce vowed to protect the earth and told Pie that she hoped he would do the same while Pie said that we would and invited her to 'build a better future together.' Lettuce wrote letters to Pie after he returned to his home world about how things were going on earth.
Fanon[]
RetaPai is a popular ship in the Tokyo Mew Mew fandom. It is the most popular ship for both Lettuce and Pie and the fourth most popular ship in the fandom on AO3. Most fans believed that their interactions in all of the adaptations were a ship tease and that it was implied that the two had developed feelings for each other. While Lettuce had feelings for Ryō, many fans believed that it was one-sided, and Ryō ended up rejecting Lettuce in Tokyo Mew Mew New. There are fans who think that Pie is too cold for Lettuce, but others point out that she challenged and successfully changed his point of view. RetaPai most commonly rivals the RetaRyo and ZakuPai pairings.
