Canon[]
Breath of the Wild[]
Revali's Gale is noted to have a recorded history within the Rito Champion's journal. Revali had dedicated his life to training and being at the peaks of it and he is noted to be incredibly insecure of his abilities as well as himself and strives to do better. He later thought up a new move in mind that he hoped to master and when he won an archery competition, he asked for an archery training ground at Dronoc's Pass, so he could perform this move at different elevations and continue to get better. Revali would end up training for a very long time to gain as his descent was ideal, but he was having trouble with the ascending part and was growing increasingly restless and determined to succeed. As the Rito children looked up to him he would later permit them to use the Flight Range as there were dangerous times. He would devise a way to control the updraft and refuses to believe that it was impossible. When he hears of Calamity Ganon returning and about the significance of Vah Medoh, Revali hoped to defeat Calamity Ganon and prove himself to the world, but when Princess Zelda visits, she drops the bombshell by telling him that the Divine Beasts were back up, much to his annoyance. Revali is starting to improve on his gale and upon learning that Zelda is returning, he looks forward to the day everyone turns to him.
In the Champion Revali's Song cutscene, when Zelda arrives, Revali is seen using his gale to soar into the air but ends up being blown away and hitting the ground and he grows more desperate than ever to master it before seeing Zelda and calling her out for eavesdropping. After accepting his call, Revali summons the updraft and manages to stay inside the whirlwind that time and he shoots several targets with Bomb Arrows and uses it again to take out the remaining ones. After the ceremony, Revali tries to come up with a name for his new move but struggles to find a suitable name, but eventually settles on Revali's Gale. In the Revali's Flap cutscene, Revali uses it to make in entrance into the scene and brags about how he created the ability that would allow him to soar and the most superior of techniques even among the Rito and with proper utilization of these skills they could handle Ganon. In the Return of Calamity Ganon cutscene, when an earthquake occurs, Revali's first reaction was to use his gale to investigate the events and is the first person to get a glimpse of Calamity Ganon rising from Hyrule Castle.
After his death, Revali kept his ability around, but as a spirit who could already levitate, it ended up being redundant to him. After Link liberates Divine Beast Vah Medoh, Revali passes this ability to him so he can make use of it. Revali's Gale is primarily used with holding the jump button and taking to the air which is helpful in saving stamina for climbing cliffs and mountains as well as getting away from unwanted battles, with the cooldown time being at six minutes real time and two minutes in Hyrule Castle to recharge. but when the EX Champion Revali's Song is completed, Revali will reduce the cooldown time to two minutes real time but it will be reduced further to forty seconds to fully recharge.
In the sequel, Tulin is also capable of utilizing wind, though he can do use the gale horizontally rather than vertically.
Age of Calamity[]
As Revali is a playable warrior, he is shown to use his gale at the touch of the ZR Button which takes him to the air so he can perform aerial attacks and it is shown through the enemy's critical weak point moment when activated, Revali will summon the wind before dealing a blow and it is also a Special Move where he takes into the air where he shoots Bomb Arrows at the end. Revali's wind abilities also manifests when certain combos are done correctly, and it will result in him spawning powerful whirlwinds and tornadoes. Revali uses his gale the most times out of the Champions in the cutscenes; in the opening cutscene of The Champion Revali, Revali hears of an apparent Guardian attack and vows to not let them get closer and uses it to soar into battle, and he does it again when he is hurled against a barricade and soars up unfazed. The Road Home, Besieged has Revali soar up upon hearing of enemies attacking ahead of them and ends up doing it again to get away from Impa and Terrako, who are invading his personal space. After Teba arrives and rescues him during an encounter with Windblight Ganon, Revali uses his gale once again to get an aim for revenge against it for nearly taking his life.
Tulin is also shown to use his updraft in the DLC, which he calls Tulin's Tornado which still needed work as Tulin is still learning the ropes on how to control the wind.
Fanon[]
Revali's Gale is one of the popular cargo ships within the Zelda community and it is not uncommon for Revali to perform this move at least once in any fan fiction that features him, primarily due to how prevalent it was for him. Fans have held Revali's Gale in high regard due to how useful it was to make climbing up steep places much easier for them and making them much less tedious to take shortcuts when needed. It was strongly believed that Revali strives to be the best, but he was so strongly insecure that he also seeks validation from others to feel good about himself and acts proud and arrogant to put up a front to avoid being seen as vulnerable by others.
