Second Selection Arc[]

First Stage[]

Rinsagi's first meet

The first time Isagi sees Rin

The first time Isagi sees Rin is in Chapter 40 when the Second Selection began. Rin didn't falter like the rest of them and immediately went through the gate after kicking two balls and making them collide with each other in midair, showcasing his skill. Isagi describes Rin's kicks as beautiful and clean, calling him incredible.

After Rin goes through the gate to the Second Selection, the screen above it displays his full name. Team Z draw parallels to the genius Itoshi Sae from the New Generation's World 11, but didn't outright figure out that Rin is Sae's younger brother.

Second Stage[]

After forming a team of three with Bachira and Nagi, Isagi enters the Third Stage with them to find Rin, Aryu, and Tokimitsu waiting for another team to arrive. Isagi recognises Rin immediately and is at first hesitant to battle him, but after learning that not only does the winning team get to steal one of the losing team's members, but Rin is indeed the younger brother of Itoshi Sae, his "ego" urges him to fight Rin.

Isagi is determined to win and steal Rin, but Rin's immense talent overwhelms everyone on the field, even his own teammates. Rin scores a goal with a straight shot from the centre line in the kick off, calling them all lukewarm and a waste of time. This is where their rivalry really begins to stem. Isagi calls Rin lukewarm (aka Rin's catchphrase) for not thinking he'd be able to see the same scenery. In the final moments of the game where the score is 4-2 in Rin's team's favour, Isagi believes can control the field and take back the game, but for the first time Rin approaches and challenges him. Isagi thinks Rin's underestimating him, but Rin, who Isagi then realises is who's really in control, sees right through his plans. Isagi describes their difference in skill incredibly overwhelming and as he helplessly watches Rin advance towards the goal, he says he's completely smitten by the beauty of the parable Rin's kick drew.

Fourth Stage[]

Isagi finds Rin and Bachira and challenges Rin to a rematch with their new teams: Team White (Isagi, Nagi, Barou, and Chigiri) versus Team Red (Rin, Aryu, Tokimitsu, and Bachira). Isagi originally plans for him to face off with Rin in the centre, but Nagi ends up asking to face Rin instead. Isagi agrees but says he'll step in to crush Rin if Nagi loses. As the match goes on, Isagi comes to the conclusion that the only one who's able to keep up with Rin's thinking is him, but Rin's thinking is faster than his. Midgame is where Rin starts to get serious and he controls both his teammates and the opposing team like puppets. It all boils down to who can take control of Barou and the field, Isagi or Rin, but Bachira finally awakens and ultimately, Team Red wins. Rin tells his teammates to shut up and chooses Isagi as their fifth and last teammate, wanting Isagi to "have a front row view of his ascension to the world's number one."

World's Best Arc[]

Prelude[]

After learning about the five world best players that they'll be facing, Isagi notices Rin isn't in the room with them. He asks Bachira where Rin is and finds him in the physical studio, doing yoga. Isagi starts copying Rin's poses so he can catch up to him. Rin calls him an idiot but doesn't try to force him to leave, even answering all of Isagi's questions which implies that he's starting to respect Isagi, or at the very least acknowledging him. Isagi tells Rin he sees him as his rival and Rin tells Isagi that he's nothing to him, but he admits that he did lose to him in that moment in the match. Rin does a handstand with only one hand, calling it the "you're never gonna beat me" pose. Isagi tries to copy it, but ultimately loses his balance and falls on top of Rin, pissing the latter off.

5v5 Against World-Class Forwards[]

As they advance towards the Third Selection room, Isagi begins to feel nervous. Rin tells him that he needs to throw away that weak mindset because they're going to win no matter who they face. When they lose, Rin is genuinely frustrated because he wholeheartedly believed that they could beat the world players. Isagi marvels at Rin's determination and claims he'll rise above him from his front row view.

Third Selection Arc[]

In the beginning of the Third Selection, Isagi isn't sure whether to choose Group A, where Rin is, or Group C, where Nagi is. Joining Rin would be a risky gamble with a good possibility of Isagi being outshined by him, but he joins him anyway in the end after talking to Reo who is also conflicted about joining Nagi.

Isagi scores the winning goal.

Fanon[]

The Foe Yay involving the two characters it's what made the ship become charming to fans, as the "Enemies to Lovers" trope is very popular and common amongst anime franchises involving the shonen genre. The first encounter between Isagi Yoichi and Rin Itoshi in Chapter 40 of "Blue Lock" is ironically akin to love at first sight. During the Second Selection, Rin showcases his incredible skill by making two balls collide midair. Isagi is utterly captivated, thinking, "My eyes. My heart... I'm completely smitten." This moment of awe and admiration, is interpreted by many fans as an ironic twist of romantic-like fascination.

On AO3, it's the third most popular ship in the manga and second in the anime, being the first most written for Rin and second most written for Isagi. Isagi Yoichi and Rin Itoshi's dynamic in "Blue Lock" is further intensified by their constant desire to be in each other's field of view. This is evident in moments like Rin's "look at me" in Chapter 115 and Isagi's "Rin! Feel it! Look at me!" in chapter 145. Their unhealthy obsession with acknowledging each other's presence and capabilities, and their need for mutual recognition fuels their competitive spirit, and pushes them to perform at their best. Thus the evolution of their relationship from adversaries to indispensable rivals made it a fan favourite.
