Canon[]

Legend says that Robin Hood was created to serve as a counter to the monarchy's corruption, in particular King John the First, who was one of the most hated monarchs of England during his time. Due to John's tendency to overtax his subjects and just to have all their money for himself, Robin was always imagined as a hero of the people who steals from the monarchy to return the money to the ones who had earned it. Thus, a fictionalized version of King John the First became one of Robin Hood's arch-enemies.

Robin Hood (1973)[]

Just as Robin and Little John escaped from an ambush of the Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin spies a solid golden carriage driving by, guarded by a dozen rhinos. He quickly figures that the hated Prince John is coming to Nottingham and immediately schemes to rob him, against the protests of Little John, who points out that robbing a royal could get both of them killed. However, Robin and Little John disguise themselves as fortune tellers to allow themselves entrance to Prince John's carriage and Robin uses a "crystal ball" to set up by Little John to read the prince's future. While distracting Prince John by telling him to close his eyes as part of the show, he manages to nab all the sacks filled with tax money right under Prince John's nose, despite John's advisor's Sir Hiss best efforts to warn the prince. Thanks to Little John stealing the golden hubcaps of the carriage while he's on the lookout, the carriage falls apart once Prince John notices the theft. Left in the mud in his undergarments, Robin somehow managed to steal Prince John's clothing without him noticing, Prince John throws a tantrum and declares Robin Hood a wanted outlaw in Nottingham. However, since Robin is Nottingham's town hero, nobody bothers to turn him in.

Aware that Robin has his eyes on Maid Marian, Prince John sets a trap for Robin by hosting an archery tournament and giving a kiss of Maid Marian as the prize for winning. Robin is ecstatic over the thought of seeing Marian again, but he knows better than showing up to the tournament as is, so he disguises himself as a stork and has Little John infiltrate the tournament as a duke. Prince John already suspects that Robin would enroll in disguise, but doesn't suspect the stork contestant until he starts doing well in the tournament. When Robin expectedly wins the tournament, Prince John politely shakes his hand only to have one of his guards tear into the stork's clothing, revealing Robin to the crowd. Prince John does not hesitate to immediately order Robin to be sentenced to death, not even giving in to Marian's desparate pleas for his life. It is only after Little John sneaks up on the prince and holds him at knifepoint that Prince John gives in, but immediately goes back to the execution once the threat is eliminated by the Sheriff of Nottingham distracting Little John. Robin however fights for his life against Prince John and his guards and manages to escape the situation unscathed after having proposed to Maid Marian.

During the celebration in the Sherwood Forest, Robin's friends write a song called "The Phony King of England" mocking Prince John, which becomes a hit in Nottingham. Unfortunately, this reaches Prince John, who responds by taxing the citizens so much that pretty much every citizen is thrown in jail. Even having Friar Tuck arrested does not satisfy him, he wants that fate for Robin Hood. But in his rage, he gets the idea of sentencing Friar Tuck to death in an attempt to lure Robin out of hiding, fully aware that he had crossed a line for he wants Robin dead. However, Robin overhears Prince John's lackeys talking about the prince's plans and thinks of a jailbreak for Friar Tuck and the citizens of Nottingham on the spot. That night, while Little John frees the prisoners, Robin sneaks into Prince John's sleeping chambers in an attempt to steal all of his tax money at once. However, just as Robin has the last sack of gold dangling through the window, Prince John wakes up and immediately alarms the guards to kill him. Robin is left behind saving one of the Nottingham children and his forced to jump into the moat to save himself from the approaching guards and the fire the Sheriff of Nottingham had set to the castle. Prince John is standing on a ledge, hoping that Robin did not survive the fall and expresses joy when he seemingly drowned in the moat. To his disappointment, Sir Hiss points out to him that Robin Hood survived, with Robin calling him "Phony King" once more.

Fortunately for Robin and the people of Nottingham, King Richard returned to the throne and immediately punished his brother after hearing what he had done, pardoning Robin in the process. While stuck doing labor in jail, Prince John is forced to watch as Robin marries Marian and lives happily ever after.

Robjohn is a rarepair, though it has some popularity in terms of Hero/Villain ships. Notably, on AO3 the ship is so rare that the "Prince John/Robin Hood" tag was made a synonym for their Disney versions, though the Mischief in Sherwood versions of the characters have a few fans on Tumblr.
