Sonic Forces[]
The future Rookie is someone who looked up to Sonic and his friends as heroes. They wanted to follow in his footsteps even despite their cowardice. They would get the chance to when Sonic was defeated and captured by Doctor Eggman - igniting a global war that lasted for six months. Joining the Resistance fighting Eggman, the Rookie's first mission would be to help rescue Sonic from Eggman's Death Egg. After commandeering one of Eggman's ships, the Rookie made it to the Death Egg and began fighting through the station towards where Sonic is being held. At the same time, Sonic is able to make an escape from his cell and begin finding a way off. In the process of his search, Sonic finds the Rookie surrounded by Egg Pawns that he quickly dispatches. After Sonic helps them up, the Rookie confirms they're there to rescue him, with the hedgehog thankful at finding a friendly face again. After Sonic reconnects with Knuckles and Amy through the Rookie's communicator, the two board the commandeered ship and leave the Death Egg.
With Sonic now back in action, he and the Rookie are sent to Green Hill to deal with a weapons factory in the area. Despite Knuckles offering to send additional forces to help, Sonic is confident he and the Rookie are more than enough to get it done. This confidence would be proven correct as the two are able to destroy the factory. Later, after Sonic is forced to recover after an encounter with Infinite - the individual that first defeated him - the Rookie is sent to Mystic Jungle to find a pair of life readings that were there. The readings turned out to be an alternate Sonic that their Sonic worked with before accompanied by Tails, both of whom they bring back to the Resistance.
The Rookie would participate in Operation Big Wave: a direct attack on Eggman's base in Metropolis that would ultimately end in failure thanks to Infinite and his Phantom Ruby. During this battle, they would run into Infinite - who they previously nearly died to before they joined the Resistance - and be frozen in fear. However, remembering words of encouragement that Sonic gave them earlier, they manage to steel their resolve and actually manage to drive Infinite away as a result. With the attack concluded, Sonic and the Rookie would work together to deal with the phantom copy of Metal Sonic that appeared in the City. After dealing with the fake Metal, a plan forms to deal with the Phantom Ruby: while the Rookie distracts Eggman's forces, Sonic breaches the Chemical Plant base to shut off the Death Egg's security and allow the alternate Sonic to destroy it so it couldn't provide any more power to the Ruby.
With the Death Egg destroyed, the Resistance launches another attack on Metropolis with Sonic joining this time. Sonic manages to find Eggman during the battle, only for him to make Infinite open a hole into Null Space in the hope of permanently trapping the hedgehog. The suction from the hole pulls Sonic in only for the Rookie to arrive and catch him while tethered with their zipline. Sonic fears they'll be sucked in too if they don't let go - which happens when their line snaps and the two are now trapped in Null Space. However, the sheer force of their bond is able to open a way out and find Eggman again. The doctor is aghast that Sonic was able to break out of Null Space, prompting the hedgehog to point out he had the Rookie to help him out. Eggman leaves vowing to get the last laugh, while Sonic and the Rookie regroup with the Resistance to plan the next move. With little time before Eggman unleashes his final plan, the Rookie, the Sonics, and the Resistance prepare for one last strike on Eggman's fortress.
As the battle gets underway, Infinite unleashes the final plan: using the Phantom Ruby to create a fake sun to burn the Resistance to ash. While watching the sun descend on them, the Sonics witness the Rookie cancel it out using a Phantom Ruby prototype they found earlier. With the fake sun dealt with, Sonic locates the now weakened Infinite and begins fighting him with the Rookie joining in later. Working together, the two deliver a final blow to Infinite defeating him and causing him to disappear - only for the Ruby to enter the fortress. The two pursue the signal deeper into the fortress and destroy its core, blowing up the fortress. Back outside, however, Eggman arrives in a new mech powered by the real Phantom Ruby ready to destroy the Resistance. Both Sonics and the Rookie join together for the final conflict with Eggman, ending with the Doctor's defeat and the end of the war. In the aftermath, Sonic and the Rookie say goodbye to the alternate Sonic as he is sent back to his dimension. As the world prepares the process of recovery, the Rookie decides to depart as there are people that might need them. Sonic gets the same idea and the two depart ready to do their parts.

Fanon[]
Rookonic is a rare ship in the Sonic fandom. When it was revealed Sonic Forces would have a custom character as one of the main characters, many saw it as opportunity to allow them to ship their fan characters with the Sonic cast in a semi-official capacity. The biggest would be those with Sonic thanks to him being the most regular partner, even having dedicated stages where the two are played simultaneously. As far as the Avatar as a character is concerned, there are fans that find it sweet they get to fight alongside the hero they idolize and consider the could get closer. The bond between Sonic and the Avatar being such a major force in Forces helps out with this idea, even if the execution felt a little heavy-handed. Ultimately, however, this ship's popularity suffers for two reasons. First is that Forces was a polarizing game and those that don't like it wouldn't want to be reminded. The second is that Sonic has had more and more popular ships before this while the Avatar ended up paired with Infinite more commonly.
On AO3, this ship is written about very little with tagged entries only numbering in the 20's range. It's the second-most written ship for the Avatar after Rookinite.
