Roy and Jamie's first encounter occurred when Roy caught Jamie influencing an act of bullying upon Nathan Shelly. He attempts to ask the coach to cease the situation only for the latter to refuse and claim that his interference will only make the situation worse. Annoyed, Roy decides to fix the problem himself. He approaches Jamie, who is the perpetrator of the teasing, and orders him to stop immediately. This was in vain, as this encourages Jamie to demand Isaac and Colin to continue. Roy takes violent matters and headbutts Colin at a nightclub before berating Jamie in the presence of the entire team. The unhealthy introduction thus caused Jamie to engage in frequent fights with Roy in the locker rooms, whether it would be him bullying someone and Roy getting frustrated with it or him constantly calling the latter an old man. Ted, the new coach, decided to put an end to their bickering by hosting a 10th Annual Benefit for Unprivileged Children. During their participation, Jamie and Roy have a drink together and engage in a meaningful conversation that builds more respect in their relationship.

This, unfortunately, did not last long. During a game against Watford F.C, Sam plummets to the ground accidentally. Instead of assisting him despite being on the same team, Jamie rolls him over and simply walks over him. This infuriates Roy and pushes him into assaulting Jamie on the field. Ted forcefully substituted Jamie's position in the game, and with his assistance, the team won without any negative distractions. Rebecca decides to return Jamie to Manchester FC, thus igniting the former rivalry between him and Roy. After Keeley and Jamie have ended their relationship, Roy begins to mingle with her and they eventually share romantic feelings. At the office, when Jamie admits his remaining love for Keeley, Roy is angered and confronts him at the club. Jamie apologizes for his inappropriate behavior, confusing and further pushing Roy's anger once he realizes he cannot do anything to him.

It is eventually revealed that Jamie's inappropriate and aggressive behavior stemmed from the abusive relationship with his father. Through guidance and slowly recollecting and redeeming himself, he applied a mature and kinder personality. During the match against Brenford FC to fight for the position in the Premier League, Jamie managed to give a penalty kick to Dani and earn a win for the team. As everyone is celebrating, Roy headbutts Jamie before giving him a tight hug. Delving deeper into the series, Roy eventually breaks up with Keeley and decides to help Jamie with his insecurity regarding his comparison to Zava. He informs him to meet him at 4 AM where he can assist Jamie in training to become better to the opposing person. It is also important to note that Jamie had attended Roy's "Uncle's Day" celebration and gave him Roy's old England kit from the 2014 World Cup as a gift that contains a shirt with Roy's name on the back. Roy thanks him, claiming he loves it.

Additionally, a post made by AppleTV on X (formerly Twitter) in 2024, used the caption, '#BiVisibilityDay, under "...a photo of the wall in Jamie's childhood bedroom. On the left is a poster of a young Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein). On the right, a photo of Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) holding two soccer balls in front of her bare chest. They both look sexy." By positioning Jamie's bisexuality and explicit framing of Roy (and Keeley), through these contexts, it is clear that during Jamie's youth he probably harbored a romantic idolization of Roy.

The Hope That Kills You[]

In an attempt to meet Keeley, Jamie is met with Roy's face. The two men sit in antagonistic silence until Keeley interrupts it. The three engage in conversation, though it remains tense. When Keeley kisses Roy in front of Jamie, he expresses verbal disgust and leaves afterwards.

Fanon[]

Many fans argue that Roy and Jamie should have become an official couple due to the chemistry in their relationship and Jamie being canonically bisexual [1]. They were upset at the perceived unnecessary relationship drama with Keeley and explained that there should have been more LGBTQ+ representation in the series.

The two are the most popular ship within the Ted Lasso fandom on AO3 with over 2,000+ romantic works.
