- “THAT LOOKS VERY GOOD ON YOU.”
- — August Ruthven to Jeanne.
RuthJeanne is the het ship between August Ruthven and Jeanne from the The Case Study of Vanitas fandom.
Canon[]
Ruthven knew her through her parents and acted as a mentor to her, often looking after Jeanne while her parents were at work. One day Ruthven introduces Jeanne to his friend Chloe, saying that she is quite naughty and that her parents are not good enough for her. He laughs and decides to leave Jeanne in Chloè's care while he makes a peace treaty between humans and vampires. His friend agrees, and Ruthven leaves on an important mission, leaving Jeanne with Chloè.
When the time came, Ruthven took Jeanne home to return her to Louise and Èric. However, young Jeanne was attached to Chloe, crying and not wanting to go home. Ruthven and his friends tried to comfort her until she calmed down. Jeanne said goodbye to Chloè and Ruthven brought her safely back to Louise and Èric.
During the human-vampire truce, his disciples, including Jeanne's parents Louise and Èric, betrayed him, turning against the humans and joining forces to defy the truce, leaving Ruthven wounded and losing his trust or his true identity. Soon, Louise and Èric were executed in front of everyone, with Jeanne as a witness. She had to pay for her crimes as an emotionless war doll since childhood.
Jeanne, who has joined the Senate's Bourreau position, is ordered to kill the beast, but fails because she learns that the beast is Chloe, the one she has been waiting to meet again. Jeanne falls into a deep depression, and the Senate demands her to be eliminated, except Ruthven decides to take her in under the name of the "Oriflamme", a family he seeks power over. But he was only in the position of a knight and personal servant. Ruthven came to Jeanne and found her in a cursed state, so he decided to use an oath like a curse to control her, forcing her to forget everything and even sleep for over 100 years.
When Jeanne wakes up, Ruthven orders her to serve his adopted nephew, "Luca". She gladly accepts and is determined to devote herself to the Oriflamme family in return for Ruthven's saving her. The female vampires would look at him positively and admire him, not wanting to cause trouble. Unlike Ruthven, who didn't care about her like in the past, but saw her as just a useful pawn.
There were several times when Jeanne was injured by him, such as when Vanitas asked the Queen for information that no one knew she was a cursed person, Jeanne tried to prevent him from speaking out, Ruthven got angry and used his powers, causing Jeanne to be injured, except for Luca, who ignored her wounds and let it go.
He later uses Jeanne to trick Vanitas into believing that he loves her, so that he goes to Noé and uses the order to force him to swear an oath, after which he comes to see Jeanne, who is still waiting for Vanitas. Vanitas rushes to Noé, as he does not trust the situation Ruthven has planned. Ruthven looks at her and touches her face. He admires how she has grown from a young child into a beautiful person. Ruthven continues, "Then Louise and Èric would be proud of you." Ruthven takes Jeanne back to the castle.
His servants reported that a beast had appeared in Gévaudan, so Jeanne volunteered to go on the mission, not wanting to embarrass Ruthven , He allowed her to go. Jeanne sets out, but fails to kill Chloè again, and Vanitas begins to suspect that Ruthven is plotting to use Jeanne for evil.
After Jeanne returns, Ruthven argues with the Senate, who demand Jeanne's removal once again, and he curses and calls her "an old geezer". The situation eventually ends with Antoine de Sade and his adopted nephew Luca intervening, calming things down.
Fanon[]
RuthJeanne is a ship that is overshadowed by VaniJeanne, who is a more popular ship, because of his role as the series' villain. Most A3o fanfics don't write her and him in a romantic relationship, and even their related fanart is rare. Also, his relationship is between a former teacher and student that he met as a child, which could easily lead to a power dynamic, but few people like them because they find them hot.
