Canon[]
Season 1[]
Both of them first met in a horse racing bet when Gi-Hun accidentally crashed with Sae-Byeok since he was running away from some guys to whom he owes money. He later realizes the young girl stole his bills. After receiving the Squid Game card and entering, he met with her inside, and defended her from Deok-Su, who was going to kick her. Gi-Hun defended her, but when he recognized her, he instead tried to punch her, although they were stopped because the first game was soon to begin.
After some voting debating whether they would leave the game due to the massive amount of deceased participants after only the first game, Gi-Hun and Sae-Byeok were thrown off the van and onto the same street, along with their clothes. The two were stripped to their underwear, blindfolded, and had their wrists tied behind their backs and their ankles tied also. Sae-Byeok asked Gi-Hun to untie her using his teeth, which he did, and she was going to leave, but he begged and begged until he could convince her to untie him, since he promised he'd forget about the money she stole from him. Sae-Byeok untied the knot from his wrists, and immediately Gi-Hun started hopping after Sae-Byeok demanding for his money back, so she left him without untying the knot from his ankles.
After all the previous participants received a second chance to return to the games, Gi-hun and Sae-Byeok met again. Later that night, after the participants discovered they could murder one another outside the games, a huge riot broke out. Gi-Hun went to Sae-Byeok and told her she can be a part of his team. Minutes later she accepted and told him her name.
In the third game (Tug-of-War), they had to form a team of 10 people, and Sae-Byeok was already with Gi-Hun, including ll-Nam, Sang-Woo and Ali. After deciding they would come together, they split up and looked for other players to join them. The 10 of them won the game thanks to Sang-Woo's orders and ll-Nam's knowledge of the game.
In the fourth game (Gganbu), they had to pair up with a partner of their choice. Sae-Byeok, Gi-Hun, and Sang-Woo paired up with their pals (or soon-to-be pals), assuming they would be relying on each other. Sae-Byeok paired with Ji-Yeong and Gi-Hun with Il-Nam, with Sae-Byeok and Gi-Hun being the last one standing between them and their partner. After returning, both of them met again, regretfully knowing that they had to sacrifice a friend.
In the fifth game, "Glass Stepping Stone", the two were relieved they picked the last few numbers. After quite a bit of shattered glass and screaming finally followed Gi-hun's turn to move forward. At some point he forgot if he was supposed to step on the left or right plane, so Sae-Byeok helped him and told him it was the left plane. Without hesitating, he jumped onto the one to his left, demonstrating trust. Gi-Hun was not the first player who asked that question. Earlier in the game, a man became confused because he was not sure whether to jump left or right, so he asked, and a woman behind him told him it was right. With much hesitation, he hopped onto the right one, which shattered and he fell through. Relievingly, there was a man with them who used to be a glass manufacturer and claimed to be able to tell which one of the planes was temperate glass and which was regular glass by looking at the reflection of the light on the planes. Unfortunately, The Front Man figured out what the man was doing, and turned off the lights above them. The man tried to squint at the dark Sang-woo killed an innocent man to survive the fifth game, much to their shock. When the game ended, all the glasses exploded, making one of the pieces of crashed glass with Sae-Byeok's stomach.
Since they were the only 3 players left, the leader decided to give them a formal dinner. Sae-byeok didn't eat well since she was hurt. Gi-Hun noticed she didn't eat and asked why. Sae-Byeok answered two times, but still he knew both times she was lying. This shows how Gi-Hun is really worried about her. He offered her to team up for the last game to defeat Sang-Woo, since he didn't trust him anymore. When he realized Sang-Woo was falling asleep, he tried to kill him, but Sae-Byeok stopped him, telling him he's not that kind of person. Both of them started talking about their families, Sae-Byeok telling him she has a little brother staying in a boarding school, and Gi-hun telling her that he has a daughter. Sae-Byeok tried to make a promise to Gi-hun, telling him that if any of them gets out, they had to care for each other's family. He denied it, since he told her both of them are getting out. Sae-Byeok started telling him she wants to get out alive, but started getting worse due the glass injury. Gi-Hun noticed it and tried asking for help. When the guards arrived, it's shown that Sang-Woo killed her. Gi-Hun cried for her dead and hugged her dead body. Gi-Hun got extremely mad and tried to punch Sang-Woo, but was stopped by the guards. The only thing Gi-Hun could do is watch in pain how they were taking Sae-Byeok.
In the last game, Gi-Hun got completely mad with Sang-Woo for killing her. At the end Gi-Hun was the winner, taking with himself the money. After all that happened he was still broken inside of him. He didn't smile once, until he met Sae-Byeok's brother, named Kang Cheol, and he happily told him Sae-Byeok and him were good friends. He then took him out of the boarding school and gave him in charge of Sang-Woo's mother, leaving them a suitcase full of money.
Season 2[]
Two years later, during a nightmare, Gi-hun finds the Front Man outside the surveillance camera room of the Pink Motel as he shows the player Sang-woo and Sae-byeok's decapitated heads as he asks, "Looking for these?" A moment later, both heads would stare at Gi-hun, making him scream in horror as he repeatedly shot his weapon at the Front Man, only for then being awakened by his alarm clock.
Another day, Gi-hun discreetly watches Sang-Woo's mother working at the fish store. He sees an older Cheol arrive who calls her "grandma" as they chat together, which makes Gi-hun smile. Later, he would visit a broker; he explains to Gi-hun that Sae-byeok's mother was recently released from a prison camp in North Hamgyong Province; she never received proper treatment for her tuberculosis and will be unable to move for a while. Gi-hun urges him to get her here as soon as possible to which the broker assures him that as soon as she recovers, they will. Gi-hun hands him a slip of paper with the fish store's phone number on it, explaining that is where Sae-byeok's brother, Kang Cheol is, and demands him to contact them if he cannot get ahold of Gi-hun himself.

Fanon[]
Due to the fact that Sae-Byeok is still a teenager and Gi-Hun is already an adult, many fans from the series decided to keep them as a friendship. Many fans found it really sweet how is that alongside the series went, they made like a father/daughter relationship, as Gi-Hun tried to be nice and protective to her, and Sae-Byeok sometimes got stubborn towards him, but still trusted him and in the end even tried to protect him. They first started trusting each other after the "Lights Out" event, since Gi-Hun told her to go near his bed if she's feeling endangered, and even if she didn’t completely trusted him on those moments, the next day she went to him and she was now part of Gi-hun’s group alongside Sang-woo Ali and Il-nam.
They also have shown to have each other’s trust in several moments during the series: during the episode “Stick to the Team”, when they were making teams, Sae-Byeok went to him so they could team up, he accepted her, even though Sang-woo was doubtful for having girls in the team. After the events of the “Marbles” game, when they returned to their dormitories, both of them saw each other in sad faces, knowing that even if both won they had to kill their friends. During the "Glass Stepping Stone" games, Gi-Hun forgot which glass he had to jump to and Sae-Byeok told him left. Without a doubt he jumped left and then he thank her moving his head. After the events of the same game, Gi-hun went protective with her, since both Sae-Byeok and Gi-Hun saw how Sang-Woo killed one of the players, and he saw Sae-Byeok was feeling bad. Even if Sang-woo was his childhood friend, he was determined to kill him in order to protect Sae-Byeok.
