As one of the first Western-licensed anime franchises and with CCS, the first with a canonical LGBTQ ship, [[HaruMichi]], Sailor Moon is one of the most popular anime franchises in Japan and around the world. Not least, this was achieved thanks to a healthy feminist message and the revolutionary combination of shoujo with the male-focused Super Sentai genre.
Since Haruka and Michiru were not just a canonical lesbian couple, but actually the first canonical lesbian couple in the mainstream children's series, they quickly became an iconic ship and one of the first models for the young yuri industry. It was so influential that during the first broadcast of the show in the West, the USA and many other countries were forced to censor their image.
Although technically Sailor Moon doesn't belong to the yuri genre, the extraordinary popularity of the already mentioned iconic lesbian ship and the good number of positive queer representations have made this series a cult in the lesbian community and one of the most famous examples of yuri shipping. The strong focus of work on strong and emotional friendship between female characters, especially in the manga, has also helped such a reputation.
