Inanimate Insanity[]

Salt and OJ could be considered mere acquaintances, for even though they were in the same space, Salt kept rambling on and on while OJ sat by, feeling increasingly irritated by the never-ending chatter.

After Nickel accidentally knocked Salt and Pepper off their platforms, OJ may have considered seeking revenge.

Salt is taken aback by OJ's unexpected return from Marshmallow's time machine. She had assumed that he was terminated and is curious to know how he managed to make it back. OJ proceeds to explain to Salt how they were able to retrieve MePhone4, but Salt interrupts him mid-sentence, indicating that she has lost interest in the explanation.

In the episode "The Snowdown", Salt's deep admiration for OJ is revealed. She engages in a fierce competition with Bomb to claim the tree adorned with OJ's picture. However, OJ intervenes and suggests that they should all decorate the tree together. The trio then proceeds to the frozen lake, where Salt struggles to maintain her balance and compares the experience to ice skating, which fails to impress OJ. Undeterred, Salt comments on the romantic atmosphere, but her words only make OJ feel uncomfortable. As they reach the other side of the lake, OJ shares his theory about the tree's unimpressive appearance being a mere optical illusion caused by their distance. Salt compliments OJ on his intelligence, further unsettling him. Finally, Salt pulls out a mistletoe, which terrifies OJ.

As the group sleds down the tree, Bomb's sudden interruption brings their fun to a halt. Salt takes this opportunity to get close to OJ, who seems visibly uncomfortable with the situation. As they continue their journey, Salt pulls OJ in closer, declaring that they have each other. This gesture does not sit well with OJ, who becomes more agitated.

Finally, the team wins, and they are tasked with choosing a previously eliminated contestant to join them. Salt insists on bringing back Pepper, but OJ disagrees and suggests Paper instead, citing his good character. Despite OJ's objections, Salt continues to push for Pepper's return, making her preference crystal clear. The situation becomes so tense that even MePhone4 decides to leave it to the viewers to decide.

In the photo taken on New Year's Day, Salt can be seen standing beside Pepper with their hands clasped together, while looking towards OJ with a smile on her face. The expression on Salt's face could suggest that she has a stronger affection towards OJ than she does towards Pepper.

During the competition, a magnetic device is used to lift the contestants up and transport them to the desert. However, Salt gets stuck to the device and cannot participate in the challenge. Despite her attempts to free herself, she remains suspended in the air and yells out in frustration. MePhone clarifies that the contestant magnet also functions as a real magnet, explaining Salt's predicament. OJ is secretly pleased that Salt is unable to compete, as her flirtatious behavior in the previous episode made him uncomfortable. Bow chimes in, adding that Salt's appearance also contributed to her feeling unwell.

As the eliminated contestants made their escape from Idiotic Island, they were forced to use their ingenuity to fashion a makeshift boat out of a sturdy tree. However, Salt, one of the eliminated contestants, slipped away unnoticed to swim back to The Island, hoping to reunite with OJ. Despite the desperate attempts of her former competitors to stop her, Salt managed to sneak her way up to OJ and tap him on the back. As he turned around to face her, he was met with the unsettling sight of Salt's creepy expression and promptly recoiled in shock. Unfortunately, OJ's reaction caused him to violate the rules of the challenge, and he was forced to sit out until MePhone allowed everyone back in. In the meantime, Salt seized the opportunity to embrace OJ, who struggled to break free from her tight grip.

Salt is taken aback by the surprising arrival of OJ and Taco as they cross the finish line.

Inanimate Insanity 2[]

He starts to say that they can just chill out in the hotel when he notices the wreck once again. Salt then says they can spend "plenty of time fixing up the hotel together, FOREVER!", and drags a screaming OJ away with her.

OJ was talking with Pickle until Salt interrupts and makes him get towels for her, calling him "darling", to his annoyance.

In episode 16, when OJ dies, Salt’s expression is horrified. In the next episode, she is noticeably on edge, and when confronted about it, she says it’s because her boyfriend died. Paper shouts that he is not her boyfriend, to which Salt responds she knows this, and to leave her be, only to later say that he’s now obviously her ex.

In the finale, when OJ and Paper are confirmed a canon couple when holding hands and smiling at eachother after their reunion, Salt interrupts them and shows clear displeasure, to which OJ and Paper angrily tell her to just leave them alone already. She has to be dragged away by Pepper as she glares at them.

At the end of "Everything's About O-J" , Salt issues a challenge to Fan for another round of OJ trivia competition, donning an orange shirt emblazoned with a picture of OJ. However, this display of enthusiasm is not received well by OJ and Paper, who appear to be less than pleased.

Fanon[]

Saltjay was an early ship in the Inanimate Insanity fandom during the gap between the first and second season of the show. Even though it's not one of the most well-liked ships in fandom, it still has a decent following, as evidenced by the abundance of fanworks created about it. Due to Salt's one-sided obsession with OJ, there is some controversy surrounding it. It's mainly because of how uneasy Salt makes OJ feel. For instance, Salt can be incredibly overly protective of OJ and may even turn against other contestants if she deems that they're trying to romantically pursue OJ. The ship popularity decreased due to OJ and Paper friendship during season 1. This ship main rivals are the two's most popular ships: Payjay and Saltpep. On AO3, the ship has 13 works.
