—Nyuudou Rensuke to Mikoto Sano about Haruaki Abe (Chapter 86, Volume 13)

SanoHaru is the slash ship between Mikoto Sano and Haruaki Abe from the A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! fandom.

Canon[]

Overview[]

Haruaki Abe is the homeroom teacher of Class 2-3 at Hyakki Academy and serves as the main character of the series, while Mikoto Sano is a student of Haruaki's homeroom and takes on the role of the leading character.Despite their rough start, the two grow significantly close to one another over the course of the story and eventually would come to depend on one another. In their journey through school life, they find themselves confiding in one another and helping each other improve for the better.

First Meeting[]

At the start of the story, Haruaki finds himself as the first human teacher in a school for youkai, Hyakki Academy, and is terrified. After hiding from his students for a while, Mikoto approaches their new homeroom teacher and reassures him that they are not going to eat him. Mikoto helps Haruaki out of his hiding spot, accidentally releasing his powers as a Yakubyou-gami, a god of disaster, causing Haruaki's clothes to rip apart in the process.

Haruaki and Sano first meeting

Mikoto saying to Haruaki that they won't eat him.

Not long after the Principal gets Haruaki dressed and gifts him with an envelope that convinces him to stay and teach. Mikoto and his best friend, Mamekichi, notice the exchange and not long after taking attendance, Mamekichi swipes the envelope and runs off. Haruaki chases after him but without success. Without having to be asked, Mikoto accompanies Haruaki and teaches him how to catch his Tanuki friend. Running low on time and determined to get the stolen item back, Haruaki manages to catch up to Mamekichi and uses a mysterious power to knock the bag over the Tanuki's head to undo his transformation. Upset that his friend might have gotten hurt, he confronts Haruaki only to be interrupted by their Principal. The Principal informs the teacher and student not to worry and that Mamekichi had simply fallen asleep from exhaustion.

After Haruaki carries Mamekichi to the nurse's office, Mikoto follow the Principal to his office and eavesdrops on his conversation with the school staff. The conversation concerned the identity of Haruaki and how he is the descendant of an incredibly strong onmyouji. Mikoto relays this information back to Haruaki, and to his surprise, his teacher was also unaware of this. Even though he is still unsure whether he has any powers or not, Haruaki asks Mikoto if he could help him keep his background a secret because he wants everyone to simply have a fun, happy high school life, and if they knew, they would be scared of him. As Mamekichi wakes up and wonders what had happened to him, Mikoto lies for Haruaki, quietly accepting his request.

The Class Photo[]

The class photo

Mikoto acknowledging Haruaki's efforts.

Mikoto and Mamekichi follow Haruaki to the girls' dormitory to watch Haruaki attempt to convince Zashiki, a Zashiki-warashi, to return to school and take a class photo together. Mikoto admits that he thinks it might be fun to watch the mess his teacher might end up making in the process. Despite the ulterior motive of having a youkai that would bring good fortune around, Haruaki is proud that no one got left out of the class photo and Mikoto praises him for it.

Youkai Studies with Miki[]

Youkai studies with miki

Mikoto giving Haruaki advice on how to deal with the drunk Miki.

Haruaki sits in on Miki's youkai studies class in order to learn more about youkai. As Haruaki learns more about the categories of youkai, he finds himself particularly curious about what category Mikoto falls into. Using his own youkai magic to provide an example to Haruaki, Miki ends up going on a rampage as a result. Haruaki goes into a panic as his drunk coworker almost revealed the secret he was trying to keep, but Mikoto calms him down and help him devise a plan to calm the rampaging teacher down. Mikoto recommends that Haruaki use his anti-youkai power to cleanse Miki's spirit energy and Haruaki would rely on Mikoto to come up with an excuse for the class. Haruaki had doubted whether he really had any powers, but as Mikoto uses what Haruaki loves most, sailor uniforms, he successfully motivates him into consciously using his anti-youkai power for the first time.

Physical Fitness Tests[]

Sano saving Haruaki from falling down.

As the physical fitness tests commence, one of Haruaki's assignments is to climb and measure the height of Oota, a Daidarabocchi. Haruaki manages to reach Oota's ear before he accidentally lets go of the rope and begins to fall. Mikoto, who was originally dozing off on top of the Daidarabocchi's head, successfully catches his teacher in time by grabbing onto his antenna.

Special Spooking Lessons with Hatanaka[]

Spooking lessons with hatanaka

Haruaki promising Mikoto that he will help him if his magic goes out of control.

Haruaki joins the special spooking lesson hosted by Hatanaka as a chaperone. After several students showcase their spooking skills, when it is Mikoto's turn, Hatanaka asks Haruaki to accompany Mikoto just in case. Haruaki notices that Mikoto never uses his youkai magic, and Mikoto says that it is because he has trouble controlling his inner thoughts and that it strongly affects how his magic turns out as a result. Haruaki tells him that it will be okay, and that if anything goes wrong, Mikoto can rely on him to purge his youkai magic with his anti-youkai power. Mikoto is touched by Haruaki's words but promptly kicks him, telling him to save his motivational speeches for when he can actually control his powers.

Golden Week at Haruaki's House[]

As Golden Week arrives, Haruaki is informed by Mikoto over a phone call that Mamekichi, Hijita, Zashiki, and himself are on their way to Shin-Osaka after they got his address from Miki. Mikoto reassures him that he will be sure to distract them while they are there, but Haruaki playfully provokes him by poking at his unfamiliar kindness. This provocation infuriates Mikoto so instead of helping Haruaki out like he initially planned, he decides to threaten him by bringing everyone to his house in a few hours and promptly hangs up on him.

After arriving in Shin-Osaka, the four students meet a young man who looks nearly identical to their teacher. Mikoto picks up a call from Haruaki asking where they were not long after the meeting with the Haruaki's look-alike. Once Haruaki locates them, he clings onto Mikoto, apologises for his behaviour over the phone, and cries out that he was just being impish with him. The students quickly learn that the look-alike was, in fact, Haruaki's older brother, Amaaki Abe.

Haruaki, Amaaki, and the four students head to the Abe household together and are welcomed by Haruaki's mother. The students learn a bit about what Haruaki was like as a child, and they tell her what he is like at school in return. Amaaki felt validated at hearing how rough Haruaki had it at school and expresses that his twin brother is not cut out to be a teacher. Amaaki promptly kick the students out of their household while his mother is distracted, but as Hijita tries to re-enter using his youkai powers, he frightens Amaaki causing him to faint in the process.

In the Abe household once again, Haruaki's mother apologises for Amaaki's behaviour as she is uncertain where his brother complex came from. Not long after, she asks them if they could help run some stalls at their neighbourhood Wisteria Festival and the students accept. As Mamekichi, Hijita, and Zashiki wander around the festival, Haruaki, Amaaki, and Mikoto are left to run the goldfish scooping stand. Finding the group awkward, Haruaki flees to get food leaving Amaaki and Mikoto alone. The two talk, and Amaaki ends up telling Mikoto a bit more about the Abe Family bloodline and Haruaki's childhood by extension. Mikoto learns that while the powers of the Abe Family decline with each descendant, Haruaki was born with extraordinary powers to the point where he would smite youkai before he even knew they were there. Amaaki expresses that while he is against Haruaki working at a school for youkai and would not care if they get exorcised, he just does not want to see Haruaki getting hurt as a result of his own powers.

Mikoto telling Amaaki his thoughts about Haruaki's teaching abilities.

As Haruaki return from getting food, he overhears Mikoto telling Amaaki that if there is a chance that Haruaki's powers puts the youkai in danger, then he would be there to stop it. Amaaki scoffs at the idea of trusting a youkai, but Mikoto informs him that it's not him he has to trust, it's Haruaki. Following these words, Mikoto seems to insult Haruaki but at the end of his speech, he admits that he thinks Haruaki is a good teacher. Haruaki is touched by Mikoto's words, and throws himself onto Mikoto, overwhelmed by his feelings of happiness and his desire to keep working at their school.

Golden week at haruaki's house 3

Amaaki telling Mikoto to look out for Haruaki.

The next morning at the train station, Haruaki and the students that followed him to Shin-Osaka wait for their train back to Hyakki Academy. Amaaki, his mother, and his father accompany them before their departure. Despite Amaaki's hatred of youkai, his parting words to Mikoto is to look out for Haruaki, entrusting his brother to Mikoto's care of which he accepts.

Mikoto's Cell Phone Number[]

After the events in Shin-Osaka, Hijita wonders when Mikoto and Haruaki exchanged cell phone numbers and laments about how it took him a long time before he even got Mikoto's number. Mikoto recalls how Haruaki wanted his number to ask him for advice on his anti-youkai power, and then tells Hijita about how Haruaki would cling onto him for several days in a row unless he gave him his number. Mikoto underestimated how clingy Haruaki could be. The same night, Haruaki would send a barrage of messages about how his day went to Mikoto.

Sports Day at Hyakki Academy[]

Sports day

Mikoto proclaiming that their class will not lose and Haruaki agreeing that Mikoto is cool.

In preparation for sports day, Haruaki assigns the students into random groups to prepare equipment for the big event tomorrow. He expresses that while he would like his class to win, what matters most is that the students have fun in the process before Hijita breaks it to him that the teacher for the last-place class will experience a punishment of which he then freaks out. After the chaos from collecting the equipment subsides, Haruaki asks Kurahashi, a Kudan, whether he could foresee the results of sports day. Kurahashi admits that he does, in fact, see Haruaki get put into a girls' blazer uniform as a punishment game. Haruaki wails at the idea that he was fated to be in last place all along, but Mikoto decides to reassure him, telling Haruaki that there is no way that they will end up in last place with him in their class and that they will overturn that prediction. Haruaki smiles, happy to hear Mikoto's words to him.

Sports day finally arrives at Hyakki Academy and everyone assembles on the sports field to listen to the Principal's speech at the event's opening ceremony. The Principal announces that the homeroom teacher of the last-place class will have their salary cut, and while all the teachers are furious, Haruaki himself is very happy that Kurahashi's prediction was wrong. Noticing Haruaki's lack of displeasure, the Principal gives Haruaki an alternative punishment, the same one that Kurahashi foretold.

After scavenger relay and mock cavalry reach their completion, Mikoto and Haruaki discuss the scores together. Hatanaka notices the two chatting so he reminds Haruaki to get equipment for the obstacle relay course event and requests Mikoto to join him. While getting the equipment from the gymnasium storage, Haruaki expresses his anticipation for the final sports day event. Mikoto tries poking him, saying that their class might end up in last place, but Haruaki dismisses it. Haruaki has complete faith in Mikoto that he would do well and that there was no way he would not trust him.

Sports day 2 fixed

Haruaki in shock after Mikoto saved him from the fallen sports equipment.

As their banter goes on, a student from another class accidentally knocks over the ladder Haruaki was using. Haruaki falls to the ground uninjured, but Mikoto quickly notices a heavy form of equipment about to fall on his teacher. Mikoto kicks Haruaki out of the way, but the equipment ends up falling on him instead. The sight of Mikoto beneath the toppled equipment upsets Haruaki, which incites him to use his freak athleticism to pull the equipment off Mikoto and rush him to the nurse's office. After his initial shock over Mikoto's injuries, Haruaki asks his students for a favour.

Sports day 3 fixed

Mikoto successfully rallying his classmates to dress in sailor uniforms to motivate Haruaki.

The obstacle course relay event begins with Akisame, the Nekomata, who then passes the relay sash to Yanagida, an Ittan-momen. Eventually, the sash reaches their class' anchor who is none other than their teacher, Haruaki. Feeling as though it was his fault that Mikoto could not run in the relay, Haruaki asks if he could take Mikoto's place as he believes that it is up to him to take responsibility for it. Unfortunately, the first obstacle Haruaki encounters is the hundred-high vaulting box which appears as an impossible endeavour for him. Watching his teacher struggle in the race for him, Mikoto decides to rally his class together. Despite everyone's reluctance at first, in order to motivate Haruaki, they all dress in sailor uniforms to cheer him on. Their peers are not only in shock by this, but they laugh at them too. However, against everyone's expectations, his students were successful. Completely motivated, Haruaki uses his freak athleticism to scale the vaulting box and to remain unperturbed by any of the obstacles, allowing him to reach the finish line in first place.

The Animal Youkai Abductions[]

Youkai abductions

Mikoto recalling Haruaki's words to him and successfully controlling his magic as a result.

Haruaki, Mikoto, and Miki set off to rescue Mamekichi, Akisame, and Hatanaka after hearing the news of serial animal youkai abductors in the area. As lead by the Mandragora, the three pursue the abductors to an abandoned factory in the woods. Miki and Mikoto find themselves stalled by their weaknesses as induced by an illusion. Haruaki was about to succumb to the illusion as well until he unleashed his anti-youkai powers onto it, revealing that the illusions were just logs all along. Mikoto manages to recover the three animal youkai but one of the abductors are hot on his trail. Mikoto tries using his magic and Mamekichi reassures him that it will be okay. Mamekichi's words remind Mikoto's of the moment during the special spooking lessons, when Haruaki reassured him that if anything went wrong with his powers, he will be sure to purge them with his own anti-youkai power. As a result of recalling this memory, Mikoto momentarily controls his powers and successfully escapes from the abductor.

True First Meeting: An Old Tale of a Class Trip[]

An old tale

"Nagoya" saying to "Mii-kun" that they won't eat him.

Miki and Hatanaka reminisce about a school trip they had nine years ago and how Haruaki reminds them of a certain lost young man that they met during a school trip. When the two first meet the lost young man that they would refer to as "Nagoya". Nagoya is immediately frightened by the demeanours of the young Hatanaka and Miki. The three young men would soon meet a child that Miki and Hatanaka notice is using spirit magic. Nagoya would approach the child who had hidden under a bench, and reassure him that they were not going to eat them.

An old tale 2

Mii-kun giving Nagoya a talisman as a thank you gift to the strange adults who helped him.

The three would learn that the child's name is "Mii-kun" and that he had been separated from his older brother. While taking care of Mii-kun, they lose track of the kid's stuffed animal only to realise it had found its way onto a dump truck. Nagoya takes initiative and chases down the truck with his freak athleticism, while Miki and Hatanaka steal a bicycle from a police officer in order to catch up to him and the truck. The two youkai students would notice their mouse teacher being carried by a bird and shoot him down to knock the stuffed animal off the truck, and Nagoya would catch it in time. Nagoya would present the stuffed toy to Mii-kun safe and sound. A moment later, Mii-kun's older brother would arrive and recover him. Mii-kun would give all three of them a single talisman of protection before he would leave with his brother. Nagoya wondered how they would split the charm before the two youkai would suggest that he could keep Mii-kun's gift.

Back in the present on the Hyakki Academy Island, Mikoto would recall a memory at the mention of Kyoto and how he had gotten help from a couple of strange adults.

School Camp of Terror[]

School camp

Mikoto catching Haruaki holding the key to passing their exam.

Class 2-3 arrives at the former schoolhouse as a part of their summer camp. Once it turns dark, the students are informed that they have been plunged into a spookology exam with the goal of finding a key and having at least one of them escape the building, but during this exam, a number of Hyakki Academy alumni will be acting to prevent their escape. While the school staff are hidden in a location to monitor the students, only Haruaki is left behind at the request of his coworkers to support the students.

Haruaki is placed in the same group as Mikoto, Akisame, and Fuji to search the building with. After several hours of searching, Mikoto begins to piece together the hints given to them. He remembered what Haruki told them as well as noticed how he acted slightly different from usual. Mikoto grabs his teacher's hand, telling him that he caught him, and Haruaki quickly gives up the act with a smile.

The Great Tokyo Haruaki Search[]

Over a phone call, Haruaki relays to Mikoto that he was swept up by a wave of office workers and got lost as a result. Unfortunately, Haruaki could not tell Mikoto all the details as his phone's battery died before he could. With their mouse teacher in tow, the students of class 2-3 start the search for their missing teacher.

Finally escaping the train he was carried into, a young man would assist Haruaki on his search to reunite with his students. Inspired by the young man's suggestion to simply buy a charger for his phone, Haruaki would quickly stand up and accidentally bump into a small zashiki-warashi dressed in red. After buying a power bank, the two would leave the building only to hear that a fire had broken out in that very building and Haruaki would dive right back in to save her.

In the midst of a fire with no way back down after recovering the zashiki-warashi, Haruaki contacts Mikoto to provide him details about his current whereabouts, but not long after providing the major details, Haruaki's side of the call is cut. Fallen debris had injured Haruaki's head and destroyed his phone in the process. Unable to find an exit, he would search through his pockets to see if there was at least something he could use to contact Mikoto with. Within his pocket, he takes hold of the talisman that had separated from his bag and finds himself holding a little boy's hand in its place. Haruaki would carry the zashiki-warashi while being led by the little boy to the rooftop. The little boy would thank Haruaki for treasuring the charm before disappearing.

Haruaki search

Mikoto lending an injured Haruaki his shoulder.

Once the little boy was gone, Haruaki would find himself in front of the doors to the rooftop. He finally makes it through the doors, but he falls to the ground in the process and would have a hard time getting up, so he would tell the youkai he was carrying to run ahead. Sprawled out on the ground, Haruaki would wonder what he had grasped in his hands, and he would figure out that it was Mii-kun who had protected him. With renewed resolve to get out of the smoke, he swore that he would survive even if he had to crawl. As a sudden pour of rain began, Mikoto alongside three other students would come to his and the zashiki-warashi's rescue. Mikoto would quickly understand why his teacher had been in the fire, and would hoist him over his shoulder and call him an idiot for it in a subdued tone of voice.

Summer Vacation at Haruaki's House[]

Summer vacation

Haruaki saying that he wanted Mikoto at his place over the summer.

Mikoto arrives at the destination indicated on the map given to him by the Principal. When he saw where the general location was, Mikoto figured that it would have something to do with Haruaki. His teacher explains that he asked the Principal if Mikoto could stay over at his place this summer vacation once he had heard that Mikoto stays over at his place because he wanted to spend the summer with Mikoto too.

Summer Vacation: Youkai Reproduction Studies[]

Mikoto telling Haruaki that he knows that he noticed he is not a youkai.

While Mikoto stays over at the Abe Household during summer vacation, Haruaki uses Amaaki to get Mikoto to ask him for help with his studies. The teacher learns that Mikoto is doing a report on the reproduction of youkai and he begins to wonder about it himself. The two use Yanagida's taxi service to interview the students of class 2-3 about the circumstances of their birth. They eventually run into Yamazaki, a Doppleganger working as a police officer on Hyakki Academy island, and learn about the theory of creation behind youkai. It is said that youkai were created by the gods to sort out the humans they had punished, and Yanagida expressed disdain for the because of how they see youkai as criminals. Expressing worry for Mikoto, Haruaki hastily changes the topic. Not long after, the two return to the taxi and Haruaki communicates that he is happy to hear a lot of stories and learn plenty about youkai. As Haruaki chattered on, Mikoto interrupts him, admitting that he does not know a lot about youkai either. Mikoto comes out to Haruaki, letting him know that he knows that Haruaki noticed he is not a youkai.

Youkai reproduction

Mikoto expressing that Haruaki makes his worries feel stupid when he's with him.

Despite Mikoto's struggle to tell him, Haruaki admits that he knew about it ever since he started teaching at Hyakki Academy thanks to the attendance book. Mikoto becomes infuriated that Haruaki had feigned ignorance, but Haruaki explains that he thought his circumstances were a lot like the Ogata Twins at first but he was not in the youkai dictionary like they were, not to mention the fact that he was not classified during the youkai studies class he sat-in on either. The teacher continues to list various other points that made it clear to him that he was different from the other students, and it causes Mikoto to feel embarrassed. Haruaki eventually relays to him that it does not matter what Mikoto is because he is simply Mikoto and who he is to him will not change. Haruaki tries lighten the mood by joking how he is human but he is somehow more of a monster than actual monsters, and he successfully makes Mikoto laugh. Mikoto would admit with a whole-hearted smile that when he is with Haruaki, all his worries start to feel like they're no big deal. After having one more secret to keep between them, Mikoto owns up to being a god and tells Haruaki to worship him for it, and the two would gradually get absorbed in their own little world talking to one another.

The Strength Test Showdown[]

It is time for the students of Hyakki Academy to take the strength test and Haruaki looks forward to Mikoto's performance. Unfortunately, Mikoto has no plans to put effort into the tests which leaves Haruaki lost in thought.

The students of class 2-3 soon find their homeroom teacher sitting in on their physical education lesson, and over the course of the lesson, Mikoto finds himself being challenged and taunted by that very homeroom teacher. Haruaki would beat Mikoto in the fifty meter dash, and Mikoto would beat him in the grip strength test in turn, but the two of them would be evenly matched in the lung capacity test to the point they almost breathed their last breaths.

Strength test 1

Haruaki provoking Mikoto.

During the shot put test, Mikoto would wonder why Haruaki would join a lesson held by a teacher who treats him with extreme caution, but as a result, he would flub his throw. The use of magic is allowed during this test, but Mikoto wanted to avoid using it because he did not want to rip people's clothes off again, that is, until he heard Haruaki's cheers. Despite accidentally hitting Haruaki in the process, Mikoto would successfully use his magic to toss the ball even further and avoid making anyone's clothes rip apart.

Strength test 2

Mikoto out of breath from sprinting his hardest to show Haruaki his cool side.

The final strength test arrives for class 2-3 in the form of the timed 1,500 meter dash, and Mikoto and Haruaki are selected to go first. As the dash begins, Mikoto takes this opportunity to ask why Haruaki is so competitive with him today and scoffs at the idea that it would be for a teacher-like reason. Haruaki explains that Mikoto's always so slick so he wanted to see how amazing he would be if he really tried. Mikoto is baffled that Haruaki's only reason was to see him look cool, and finds that Haruaki's words and actions always put him at ease. Motivated to run to his fullest, he decides to grant Haruaki's wish and show him how cool he can really be and wins the race. The two would soon sprawl out on the ground in exhaustion, but Mikoto would proudly proclaim how he had given it his all.

A Temporary Teacher Arrives![]

Ebisu, a temporary teacher, arrives at Hyakki Academy and will serve as Haruaki's assistant teacher. Over the course of Ebisu's first lesson with Haruaki, Ebisu showcases his own skill as a teacher and Haruaki starts to feel insecure about his own teaching skills.

Temp teacher 1

Mikoto defending Haruaki from Ebisu's insults.

Not long after the lunch break began, Mikoto would notice Haruaki feeling upset and would chase after him. Unfortunately for Mikoto, Haruaki was way too fast for him to catch up to. A voice behind him would tell him that the teacher was in the faculty room, and Mikoto would find that it had come from Ebisu. Mikoto would wonder why his brother had come to his school when he hated youkai, but Ebisu would change the topic, describing how Haruaki is a typical do-gooder like prey asking to be taken advantage of by the wicked, and how gods are supposed to rescue weak humans like him. Mikoto would dismiss the idea that Haruaki is weak, and would defend him against Ebisu, telling him that he doesn't get to insult Haruaki when he does not even know what is good about him before running off to the staff room.

Temp teacher 2

Mikoto admitting that he likes Haruaki's bizarre teaching style.

Mikoto would arrive at the staff room finding Haruaki barricading himself beneath his own desk. He would ask Haruaki to tell him what was wrong, but he would ignore him. Immediately enraged, Mikoto would forcefully drag him out from beneath his desk and pin him against it. Haruaki would explain his insecurities about how he does not manage to get his students to get good grades and how he always does things based on his own feelings, and that Ebisu would get the same things done far more skillfully. Frustrated with Haruaki, he would interrupt him to turn the words that Haruaki had told him over the summer break back to him and would tell him that he is just Haruaki and that he has his own style of teaching that may be bizarre, but some students actually like the way he teaches, like himself, for instance.

The Kyoto School Trip[]

The school trip to Kyoto commences! In the midst of the students and teachers discussing the significance of Kyoto, Haruaki is distracted by what seems to be someone nearly identical to himself before being brought back to reality by Mikoto. Mikoto would attempt to drag Haruaki back to where the students of class 2-3 are, but Haruaki would get distracted by sailor uniforms and pull Mikoto in that direction instead.

Kyoto class trip 2

Mikoto shielding Haruaki's soulless body after it was thrown off the roof.

Day two of the Kyoto school trip, Haruaki would find himself being called towards the Seimei Shrine, and Mikoto alongside several other students would chase him to it. The teacher would soon break the anti-youkai barrier protecting the shrine by accident which would inspire the students with him to explore it. While they explore the shrine, their environment suddenly changes to exterior of a tall traditional structure as a white tiger would claim that Haruaki is not just any descendant of Abe no Seimei, but rather his reincarnation. The white tiger would take human form and introduce himself as Byakko before ripping Haruaki's soul out of his body. Mikoto is enraged by Byakko's actions and would demand that he return their teacher's soul back. The snake assisting Byakko would throw Haruaki's soulless body off the building, and Mikoto would risk his life to chase after the husk and shield it from the fall.

After Yanagida and Momoyama rescue Mikoto and Haruaki's body in time, the students would formulate a plan to retrieve their teacher's soul from Byakko. Mikoto would manage to take hold of Haruaki's soul but get trapped in the process. Thanks to Nyuudou and the Mandragora guide, the teachers would come to their rescue and break Mikoto free from their grasp. Unfortunately, that freedom would be brief as Mikoto's arm would get caught in Byakko's bite and would be treated as a hostage. Byakko would demand Mikoto to give him the soul, but the student would retaliate using his own magic. Mikoto's magic would go out of control and shatter the soul in the process, devastating him.

Kyoto class trip 3

Nyuudou telling Mikoto that Haruaki desires to see him healthy and happy.

Once Mikoto is prompted to pull himself back together, the students would split themselves into five groups and thus the search for Haruaki's soul fragments begins. Two groups successfully collect a fragment each, specifically Haruaki's "worldly desires" and his "freak athleticism", and would return them to his body. The once empty body would wake up, but would not be very responsive. Ebisu concludes that it is not only emotions he lacks right now, but rather a mind. Thanks to his worldly desires, he still responds to the presence of sailor uniforms. As the Ebisu and the students with him discuss where the other groups have gone, Haruaki would immediately run off, and the students would chase after him, suspecting that he was chasing after sailor uniforms. After running off, the fragmented body would encounter an illusion of his previous incarnation before being awoken by Mikoto's pull. The students the husk left behind finally caught up, but after noticing that there were not any sailor uniforms around, Nyuudou makes the realisation that Haruaki was worried about Mikoto beating himself up over breaking his soul and that wanting Mikoto to be healthy and happy is one of Haruaki's desires too.

Kyoto class trip 4

Haruaki's body with a partially restored soul shields Mikoto from Byakko's attack.

As Mikoto begins to feel better, the two would run into a soul fragment containing Haruaki's "wimpiness" being chased by Byakko. The group chases the fragment with Mikoto and Yanagida, who is carrying Haruaki's body, in the lead. Byakko proceeds to attack the two and manages to discourage Mikoto from using his powers. As Byakko would launch another attack at Mikoto, this time it would be Haruaki's turn to shield him from getting hurt.

Fortunately, the Principal arrives just in time to shield Haruaki and Mikoto with his magic as well as suppress Byakko. While Byakko was bound by the Principal, Genbu arrives with Haruaki's "memory" soul fragment in tow. Once again, Mikoto would rush in to pull soul fragment out of Genbu's grasp, because to him, obtaining this fragment would mean that he can at least see Haruaki's smile again.

Kyoto class trip 5

Haruaki's memory fragment encouraging Mikoto so they can escape Byakko's space together.

Karasuma would come to Mikoto's rescue and swipe Haruaki's soul fragment from Genbu in the process. Unfortunately, Byakko manages to distract Karasuma and teleport all three into a space with an endless amount of doors created by Byakko's magic. The places the doors lead to in Byakko's domain are random, some being trap doors while some lead to a place to recover, and one of the doors they go through contains one of Byakko's memories of the past. After they witness the past, the fragment proposes that Mikoto should try using his magic to destroy Byakko's space, but Mikoto would reject that idea because he can't trust his powers. The fragment would materialise in a larger form to hold Mikoto's hands and tell him that he will believe in Mikoto enough for the both of them. Thanks to the words of encouragement, Mikoto would take on the stance Haruaki uses for his anti-youkai powers and proceed to break the barrier that trapped them in the space.

Kyoto class trip 6

Mikoto encourages Haruaki the same way Haruaki's memory fragment had by believing in him.

Thanks to the assistance of the teachers and students, Haruaki's soul is now intact and complete within his own body. However, to their dismay, thanks to the disappearance of Genbu and Seiryu, the barrier surrounding Kyoto keeping malevolent youkai out began to shatter. The students work together to fend off the youkai and to keep the general public oblivious to the incoming danger, but in the end, it is up to Haruaki to handle this and Mikoto knows that Haruaki is already aware of what he needs to do. Despite being aware, Haruaki is struck with fear at the idea that he would have to pull off what Abe no Seimei had done in three days into a single hour and tries to come up with another plan instead, but Mikoto rejects that notion. Mikoto would tell Haruaki that he can pull it off, and says that he doesn't have to worry because if he isn't confident, then Mikoto will believe in him enough for the both of them. Thanks to Mikoto's encouragement and advice, Haruaki would successfully create a contract with all four gods and re-establish the barrier around Kyoto.

Fanon[]

SanoHaru is well-loved not only for their unconventional relationship between student and teacher, but also for the way that grow and learn because of one another. Their dynamic is one that grows from inadvertently causing trouble for one another, keeping the others' secrets, and being there to suppress the others' powers if they go out of control, to one where they selflessly protect each other, have faith in the others' abilities, and are there to support one another. Within various fanworks, Mikoto is often portrayed as a tsundere with a one-sided crush to an oblivious Haruaki who innocently showers him with affection. While this direction is likely due to the nature of their relationship, it is also a common trope for those who enjoy student-teacher pairings.

The author has not only been open to incorporating queer themes into her work, but also the relationship between a former teacher and a student through the canon pairing, HataIba, within one of the arcs exploring said queer themes. This has led various fans to speculate whether the HataIba pairing serves as a parallel to SanoHaru and what it could represent for the future of Haruaki and Mikoto.

On AO3, SanoHaru is the third-most popular pairing in the, A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! fandom, and it is also the second-most popular pairing for Haruaki Abe and the most popular pairing for Mikoto Sano on AO3.

On Pixiv, SanoHaru is the second-most popular pairing in the, A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! fandom, while its counterpart, HaruSano, is the fifth-most popular pairing. The two make up the most popular pairing and the second-most popular pairing for both Haruaki Abe and Mikoto Sano on Pixiv.

Trivia[]

  • The line Mikoto tells Haruaki during their first meeting is his modified reiteration of what the young Haruaki once told Mii-kun nine years ago, "Hey. It's okay! We won't pick you up and eat you. Come on out from there." [1] [2]
  • Mikoto and Haruaki are considered to be a duo within the series, alongside the Douman Ashiya and Ranmaru Karasuma duo as well as the Koutarou Hijita and Beniko Zashiki duo.[3]
  • Both Mikoto and Haruaki have an older brother.
  • Both have names related to life, Mikoto (命) and 晴明 (せいめい).[4]
  • Mikoto has a soft spot for Haruaki's bright smile, if he asks for something while smiling, Mikoto will end up doing it.[5]
  • Suzuki Ryouta, Mikoto's voice actor, said in an interview that he sees Mikoto as the heroine because of the role he plays in the story.[6]
  • Their height difference is 14 cm (Mikoto - 174 cm, Haruaki - 188 cm). They have the same height difference as the protagonists of Tanamai's previous work, Takano (174 cm) and Shinkou (188 cm).[7]
  • In a Twitter art, Tanamai posted that if you think about the Yohaji duo, it has to be Haruaki and Mikoto.[8]
  • Sano can be seen thinking about Haruaki in a video on Twitter that shows the similarities in his design with that of his brother, Ebisu.[9]
  • Tanamai said that if you add “<Sano-kun” to a kaomoji, it will look like Haruaki.[10]
  • While in the anime Sano seems to recognise Haruaki and the others from their encounter in the past, this is probably not the case in the manga.
