Sarascara is the het ship between Kujou Sara and Scaramouche from the Genshin Impact fandom.

Canon[]

Scaramouche and Kujou Sara have never met nor interacted. However, Scaramouche was involved with the Fatui plot to implement the Vision Hunt Decree, which Kujou Sara then became the main enforcer of. In his voice lines, Scaramouche invites anyone from his past life to settle their grudges with him and that he even looks forward to it. Though this is not directed specifically towards Kujou Sara, Kujou Sara holds a grudge against the Fatui involved in the Vision Hunt Decree. During the Watatsumi Island peace talks, Kujou Sara states that she will hunt down every last one of La Signora’s subordinates.

In her character stories, Kujou Sara is described to gift fruits and melons to bakedanuki who were previously thieves but had since returned the stolen items. If she had to describe it, she would call these gifts “a sort of consolation to those who had turned from an unrighteous path”. Scaramouche turned to an unrighteous path as a result of his three betrayals, believing that humans were worthless and that the world was a tapestry of lies. Upon learning the truth, which is that Niwa Hisahide never betrayed him at all, Scaramouche attempted to atone by erasing himself from Irminsul in hopes that it would prevent the deaths he was responsible for. Since then, he has turned from such an unrighteous path and now believes that humans deserve to live despite their short lifespans.

Both Scaramouche and Kujou Sara have gone through what they perceive as betrayals by their parents. Scaramouche considers being abandoned by Raiden Ei, who he calls his mother, a betrayal. In addition, Scaramouche was deceived by Il Dottore, another member of the Fatui Harbingers, into believing that he was betrayed by Niwa Hisahide. During the Vision Hunt Decree, Kujou Sara considered her adoptive father’s deception regarding Fatui involvement as a betrayal. Kujou Sara also felt deceived as the Tenryou Commission, who raised her to be loyal to the Raiden Shogun, had betrayed that loyalty by colluding with Fatui. Despite experiencing similar betrayals, they had differing reactions— Scaramouche accepted the betrayal and left behind those who had betrayed him, whilst Kujou Sara accepted the betrayal and quickly went to confront those who had betrayed her.

Both Scaramouche and Kujou Sara feel guilty for the death of someone related to Kaedehara Kazuha. Scaramouche feels guilty for the deaths of those in Tatarasuna, including Niwa Hisahide, a distantly related ancestor of the Kaedehara Clan. The one who killed Niwa Hisahide was Il Dottore, yet Scaramouche attempted to erase himself from history to give those killed at Tatarasuna another chance at life. Kujou Sara feels responsible for the death of Kaedehara Kazuha’s unnamed friend, who she bested in a battle before the throne. The one who killed Kazuha’s friend was the Raiden Shogun, yet Kujou Sara attempted to apologize to Kazuha during the Irodori Festival.

Both Scaramouche and Kujou Sara’s least favorite food voicelines are about sweets. Scaramouche’s least favorite food is dango, though his distaste for sweets extends to all desserts. Kujou Sara’s least favorite food is sweet foods. A notable difference is that while Scaramouche dislikes the taste of sweets, Kujou Sara does not. The reason she avoids sweet foods is because she finds them too relaxing and does not allow herself to relax. Thus, both avoid sweets, one due to the disgust it causes, and one due to the pleasure it causes.

Both Scaramouche and Kujou Sara have unique relations to the Raiden Shogun/ Raiden Ei, with Scaramouche being one of Raiden Ei’s creations and Kujou Sara being one of Raiden Ei’s generals. Scaramouche feels resentment towards Raiden Ei for neglecting him. Initially, he misunderstood that he was abandoned for being too weak when in reality, Raiden Ei viewed the abandonment as ‘setting him free’. Kujou Sara feels indebted to the Raiden Shogun, who she believes saved her life by granting her a vision. However, Raiden Ei confirms that she does not get to choose who receives Electro visions. Thus, Scaramouche and Kujou Sara have opposing views on the Raiden Shogun/ Raiden Ei due to misconceptions.

Kujou Sara realizes Scaramouche’s misunderstanding regarding Raiden Ei in her own relation to Kujou Takayuki, her adoptive father. Scaramouche misunderstood that he was not strong enough for Raiden Ei when, in reality, Raiden Ei thought she was helping him by setting him free. Kujou Takayuki values Sara for her strength, as he adopted her after seeing her vision and believing that she would bring prosperity to the Kujou Clan. When a younger Sara played games with some of her fellow soldiers, she was chastised for doing something pointless instead of training. Kamisato Ayato also describes Kujou Sara as Takayuki’s weapon. Sara’s strength is important to Takayuki, who cares more about her usefulness to him.

Scaramouche realizes Kujou Sara’s misunderstanding regarding the Raiden Shogun in his own relation to Nahida, the dendro archon. Kujou Sara misunderstood that the Raiden Shogun saved her life when, in reality, the Raiden Shogun had no say in granting Sara the vision that saved her life. Currently, Scaramouche feels indebted to Nahida for helping him recover the memories of his previous incarnation. One of the reasons he is currently staying in Sumeru is to repay Nahida. Nahida actually did help Scaramouche regain his memories, so Scaramouche’s gratitude towards her is justified.

Kujou Sara and Scaramouche both have longer lifespans than average humans and can fly. Scaramouche is a puppet with an Anemo vision. As a puppet, he is unsusceptible to corrosion and effectively immortal. With his Anemo vision, he is able to swiftly maneuver through the air. Kujou Sara is a tengu. A tengu is a type of youkai, which are known to have significantly longer lifespans than humans. Tengu specifically have wings that allow them to fly freely in the sky.

Kujou Sara originally lived in the forests of Inazuma before being adopted by the Kujou Clan to serve the Raiden Shogun. In contrast to this, Scaramouche was originally created by Raiden Ei before being left in Shakkei Pavilion and eventually joining the Fatui. While Kujou Sara began as an unrelated party to Raiden Ei, she was taken in and given an important role. While Scaramouche was created to play the important role of storing a gnosis, he was cast out. Both of these journeys involved Yae Miko. Before setting Scaramouche free, Raiden Ei consulted with Yae Miko. Then, in the midst of the Tatarasuna Incident, Scaramouche pleaded for Yae Miko to send help to Tatarasuna. Before Kujou Sara joined the Kujou Clan, Yae Miko was the one who recommended her to them.

Both Kujou Sara and Scaramouche have described themselves as people who should refrain from meeting others and have been linked to the concept of loneliness. In his first birthday mail, Scaramouche writes that, in encouraging him to meet people, Nahida fails to consider how much of an “experience” it is for others to meet him. He doesn’t like to be around others, and Nahida tells him that it must be painful to be lonely all the time. In her voiceline about Kamisato Ayaka, Sara expresses a desire to visit the lively Kamisato household. However, she worries that her serious demeanor would not fit in there. By her own admittance, she also gets lonely sometimes.

Both Kujou Sara and Scaramouche are straightforward individuals. Yae Miko notes that Sara speaks bluntly and with little tact. The traveler claims that Scaramouche has a sharp tongue, and Scaramouche agrees that he speaks rather bluntly.

Both Kujou Sara and Scaramouche have an express interest in spars. In his voiceline about the Damselette, Scaramouche states that he could at least challenge her to a fight. In her voiceline for the sun being out, Kujou Sara notes that it would be a good weather for a showdown.

Both Kujou Sara and Scaramouche have been in leadership positions, with Kujou Sara being a respected leader by all her subordinates within the Shogun’s army and Scaramouche being a feared leader by his subordinates within the Fatui,

Fanon[]

SaraScara is a rarepair within the Genshin Impact community. The relationship is typically portrayed as an enemies to friends to lovers slowburn due to their opposing worldviews and opinions regarding Raiden Ei. The ‘friends’ portion of SaraScara is very important to fans, who believe their romance depends on a deep foundation of mutual understanding and friendship first.

The ship started gaining traction around January of 2023, with a majority of fan content being on TikTok.

Given Scaramouche’s history as a harbinger and seeker of the truth, it is widely believed among fans of the pairing that he knows the truth about visions— namely, that the archons cannot choose who to give visions to. Thus, given his resentment for Raiden Ei, past instances of wanting revenge, and his own valuing of the truth, fans imagine that, upon learning that Kujou Sara is so devoted to the Raiden Shogun due to a lie, Scaramouche would be motivated to reveal the truth in hopes of weakening her faith and causing Raiden Ei to lose an important pawn. However, given Kujou Sara’s stubborness and loyalty, he would possibly be hard pressed to convince her of this truth without concrete evidence, the same way that Yae Miko and the Traveler were hard-pressed to convince her of Takayuki’s betrayal during the Inazuma Archon Quest. This could then lead to an extended effort where he stays by her side to persuade her as they inevitably learn more about each other. His motive could change during this time from revenge to redemption as he begins to see his past self in her current situation.

One theme that this pairing often explores is how their own experiences might influence the other’s view of Raiden Ei. Perhaps, given her attachment to family, Scaramouche’s personal story which paints Raiden Ei as a neglectful mother, in addition to his critiques on Inazuman society and knowledge regarding the truth of visions, would cause Sara to idolize Ei less. Instead, Sara, who seems to prioritize results over intentions, as seen in her allowing Shikanoin Heizou in the police force and her confrontation with Kujou Takayuki, may even begin to view Raiden Ei as a bad archon. On the other hand, Scaramouche may see what he could have been in Kujou Sara, a family-oriented person who is deemed powerful enough by Raiden Ei. Thus, her loneliness might inform him that he would have led a life of being mistreated even if his creator had decided to keep and use him as a tool. If he would have been neglected whether or not he was abandoned, then there may no longer be a point in wishing he had not been abandoned, making him much more indifferent to Raiden Ei.

In regards to Kujou Sara’s gratitude towards her family, fans believe that Scaramouche would be annoyed by her attitude. That, in empathizing with her, he would view their mistreatment as grounds to cut them off and be frustrated at her insistence that she owes them everything.

The hope of fans is that, in this situation, Scaramouche would eventually convince Sara of the truth, cause her to recognize the mistreatment she has been subjected to, and encourage her to prioritize herself more. Over the course of witnessing her deep devotion to family and archon, he may also begin to yearn for such affection, giving him a motive to invite her to go to Sumeru with him. Many fans believe that, in Sumeru, Sara would take the opportunity to make friends and lead a fulfilling life. This could in turn cause Scaramouche to appreciate his current life in Sumeru more as she inspires him to also form closer relationships with others.

Two individuals that are considered as important ‘unintentional wingmen’ to SaraScara are Kaedehara Kazuha and Kuki Shinobu. Scaramouche’s guilt towards Kazuha’s ancestor and Kazuha’s own philosophy towards punishment is seen as vital in how Scaramouche’s view towards Sara might change— from a means of taking revenge on Raiden Ei, to a means of making up for his past by helping Sara out of her situation. The way that Shinobu deals with her family is seen as an encouragement to Sara— that if consulted, Shinobu would encourage Sara to leave Inazuma and pursue a new start in Sumeru with Scaramouche,

Many fans of this pairing find humor in their physical differences. Kujou Sara is considerably taller than Scaramouche despite being younger and supposedly weaker. In many portrayals of their domestic life in Sumeru, Kujou Sara fulfills the traditionally male role of breadwinner while Scaramouche fulfills the traditionally female role of househusband. However, in their romantic relationship, Scaramouche is often portrayed as the dominant one. Kujou Sara may be the strongest person that she knows outside of the Shogun, so it is funny to imagine a shorter and less muscular Scaramouche easily subduing her.

Based on the idea that Scaramouche has a resemblance to Raiden Ei, many fans like to imagine that Kujou Sara would find Scaramouche to be extremely beautiful. In addition, Scaramouche is often drawn with birds flocking to him. As tengus are crow youkai, fans also like to imagine that Sara would be naturally drawn to Scaramouche. Based on Scaramouche’s compliment of the Traveler’s eyes, which are yellow, fans also imagine that Scaramouche would like Sara’s yellow eyes. In addition, their own preference for straightforwardness may lead them to appreciate each others’ manner of speech, which comes off as too harsh to others.

Another common belief among fans of the pairing is that Kujou Sara’s current moral code is similar to the moral code that Scaramouche was taught before the Tatarasuna incident. Thus, Sara’s strict adherence to her moral code would begin to restore Scaramouche’s faith in the world, as he witnesses the existence of someone who genuinely embodies the morals that he had lost faith in.

Scaramouche is commonly depicted as the one who confesses his feelings first. This is because fans are confident that Scaramouche could feel secure in a relationship with Sara despite being commonly characterized as insecure and easily jealous. That is, Sara’s capacity for loyalty to her family and archon would have first disgusted him so much that he could not question her loyalty to him once they are friends. In addition, Scaramouche is considered to realize his feelings first, as the idea of Sara choosing him over Inazuma subconsciously leads him to feel possessive over her affections. Sara is commonly depicted as the one who proposes marriage first since Scaramouche seems more likely to disdain the idea of depending on a government to recognize a marriage.

Fanon SaraScara explores many alternate universes. For example, what if Scaramouche was the Raiden Shogun? Fans imagine he would have a much closer relationship with Sara than the Raiden Shogun currently has due to his capacity for emotions. What if Sara was general during the Tatarasuna Incident? Perhaps her efficiency could have prevented Scaramouche from leaving after the second betrayal. Notably, there are also many modern AUs where SaraScara no longer follows the enemies to lovers trope, but instead a gentler friends to lovers trope. Though, the most popular alternate universe that focuses SaraScara is one where Raiden Ei learns of his villainy and sends Kujou Sara to monitor him and deliver him the gnosis as a gift. This process eventually leads him to propose giving up his ambition of becoming a god if Sara is willing to abandon Inazuma and run away with him.

Scaramouche is known to enjoy observing expressions of horror and fear. Kujou Sara is known for rarely smiling and having a stone face. Thus, another popular head canon amongst fans is that Scaramouche would enjoy teasing Sara. This would be in hopes of getting a reaction from her, where that success would make him especially excited due to her usual calmness. A common situation imagined by fans is one where the two eat cake together— that despite his distaste for sweets, Scaramouche is so interested in seeing how Sara would look completely relaxed that he proposes they eat a piece together. Then, seeing her relax encourages him to keep going, until he himself learns to like sweets as he associates them with Sara’s happiness rather than the hypocrisy of the world.

This pairing also explores the concepts of freedom and home. Within fanon content, Sara is often symbolic of the home Scaramouche never had, helping her find a sense of self-worth outside of her strength. Scaramouche is symbolic of the freedom that Sara never got, fulfilling him in his quest for freedom as he instead becomes freedom for someone else. This relationship is also often thought to fulfill Scaramouche’s own sense of purpose, as Sara loves Inazuma dearly and is presented as an embodiment of it. Thus, if Scaramouche believes that he was created to rule Inazuma, he could find a sense of purpose in treating Sara right when the Inazuman government did not. Or, given his desire for a heart, he could find fulfillment in taking care of hers, figuratively.

Another fun fact for many fans of the pairing is that Kujou Sara and Scaramouche are on opposite sides of the zodiac chart. Whereas Sara is a Cancer, Scaramouche is a Capricorn. Fans lean into these labels as astrology and constellations are vital to the lore within Genshin Impact, giving credence to the idea that characters’ birthdays were chosen with zodiacs in mind. Thus, their constellations being opposites feeds into the notion that Sara and Scaramouche are opposites who attract and make up for each other’s flaws.

One other idea that many fans have is that some of Scaramouche’s sarcasm flies over Sara’s head, allowing her to address his thoughts without being distracted by his attitude. This then leads them have meaningful conversations and debates about their differing philosophies. In his character demo, Scaramouche’s world is dull until he starts fighting. Thus, fans imagine that Scaramouche would find such debates interesting because debates are a form of fighting. As both of them grow as a result of such an exchange of ideas, Scaramouche may find new joy in life via meaningful discussion with Sara.

Other common headcanons for SaraScara is that Sara would give up the Kujou name after moving to Sumeru with Scaramouche, Sara would apologize first after a fight, Sara would implement policy changes to address some of the prevalent issues Scaramouche has concerning Inazuman politics, Scaramouche would use his Anemo vision to be eye level with Sara, Scaramouche would cook traditional Inazuman cuisine for Sara, SaraScara would travels Teyvat together as Sara witnesses new sights and Scaramouche finds new meaning in his previous travels by guiding her, and SaraScara would eventually have children of their own given their attachment to family, giving them a chance to be the parents that they never had.

Kujou Sara has only appeared as a rate up on the Raiden Shogun banner, so fans enjoy indulging in the thought that the first non-Raiden Shogun banner she appears on would be Scaramouche’s.

Another relationship that fans of the pairing hold dear to their hearts is one between Kujou Sara and Nahida, who they imagine would have a similar therapeutic effect on Sara as she is currently having on Scaramouche.
