Canon[]

Sasara and Samatoki were formerly best friends and partners apart of Mad Comic Dialogue. As a result of the True Hypnosis Mic, Sasara and Samatoki engaged in a final confrontation before they broke off ties and would cease to reunite until years later. Their break-up greatly wounded Samatoki who was unaware of Sasara’s brainwashing.

Sasara and Samatoki have a duet together, and in the video game adaptation, own many matching cards together covering the DoD era.

History[]

Sasara first spots Samatoki when he’s fighting on a group single-handedly. Before Samatoki continues to beat up his enemy, Sasara jumps in and grabs Samatoki’s arm before he swings, trying to stop the situation by telling Samatoki he's like a "Madnolia." Samatoki deadpans, confused. He gruffly says, "What?", falling short at words. However, Sasara is startled after he sees Rosho in Samatoki’s same expression, jogging his memories of his former partner. Sasara cracks one more joke, leading to Samatoki’s aggravation as he threatens to kill him, making Sasara run off comedically, singing toodles. Samatoki stares at Sasara, confued, but attempts to shrug off the weird encounter. Afterwards, Sasara remembers Samatoki’s appearance and thinks back on how he looked exactly like Rosho, reminiscing deeply. From then on, he wanted to hang around Samatoki more.

Later, Sasara spots Samatoki fighting the Tobari Brothers, making Sasara laugh about Samatoki's delinquent behavior. Sasara decides to opt out of watching the fight, but he ends up distracting the brothers to help Samatoki. Later, Samatoki snaps, wondering why Sasara keeps sticking his nose in his business, and even asks him this. Sasara gives his reasoning honestly, laughing while explaining that his friend reminds him a lot of Samatoki. This leaves him incredulous, and Sasara sweats while adding he feels odd about how similar the two are. Nevertheless, Samatoki runs off to help his teammates, as Sasara comments about how busy Samatoki is.

However, Sasara helps out Samatoki again by pretending to be Zanen Tobari’s ally, stirring up chaos so they can escape. This works out easily as Sasara once more laughs at how violent Samatoki is, before afterwards he gains the latter’s gratitude for another assisted fight. Sasara comments that they make a good team.

Sasasama cigarette kiss

Sasara and Samatoki share cigarettes.

The next time Sasara helps out Samatoki is when the Tobari Brothers frame him for an abduction. Sasara goes around the city to find evidence in order to prevent Samatoki’s arrest and succeeds, leading to Samatoki’s shock and confusion as to why he continually helps him out. Nevertheless, Samatoki warms up to Sasara and stops threatening him, and they become close confidants. Sasara explains he enjoys hanging with Samatoki because he’s reminded of an old friend, that being Rosho. At the end, Samatoki asks for a lighter, so instead, Sasara lights his own cigarette and brings it to Samatoki's.

DOD Chapter 5[]

Before Sasara and Samatoki formed MCD, Sasara breaks into Samatoki’s office. Before Sasara speaks, Samatoki says, “No.”, already predicting that Sasara was going to ask him to do a comedy routine with him. Sasara ponders how hard Samatoki is to win over, so he resorts to his final option; lie and explain he has a younger sister. Sasara sternly leans forward and solemnly explains he wants to cheer up younger sister via comedy, hiding behind his fan and nervously waiting for his response. Sasara expects it to fail, but he gets horrified when Samatoki grabs his collar, pulls him forward, smiling and fervently calling him a great brother. Sasara thinks, “What on earth…? Where’d this come from?”

Samatoki announces they’ll make the best comedy skit in the world and pats Sasara, smiling widely. Later that night, Sasara is startled to see Samatoki messaged him, and said email proceeds to read Samatoki asking for 100 comedy skit videos. Samatoki adds with a request for Sasara to write 10 sketches, making Sasara confused but nevertheless proceeding. The next day, Samatoki happily says he watched all 100 videos, and Sasara, with dark eye bags, nods and determinedly shows all the sketches he wrote.

Sasara calls their duo Sasasama

Sasara calls their duo “Sasasama”

After reading them, Samatoki grins and calls the sketches good shit, making Sasara beam and lie that he’s blushing. Afterwards, they head to practice in the park. Sasara calls their duo, “Sasasama”, making Samatoki glower and question the name. Sasara laughs and tells Samatoki to go along, so he begrudgingly concedes as their skit begins.

However, their skit falls short as Samatoki punches Sasara in the face too hard, making him cower and beg for mercy. Samatoki is confused by Sasara's actions, believing this to be part of the skit. Nevertheless, their routine ends shortly after bystanders call the cops on them, landing Samatoki in jail. Nevertheless, afterwards Sasara is overjoyed and smiles when Samatoki says their performance wasn’t too bad.

Sasara latches onto Samatoki

Sasara cries, latching onto Samatoki

Sasara, still weirded out, asks Samatoki why he’s so gung-ho about their comedy routines, and Samatoki’s expression softens as he explains he has a younger sister of his own. He adds that his family situation is tough, so Sasara worriedly asks for elaboration. Samatoki says he trusts Sasara, so he explains he started taking care of Nemu on his own after their parents passed. Sasara begins to comedically sob waterfalls, latching onto Samatoki’s body and hugging him intensely, saying he’ll be there to help him in whatever way. Samatoki glares, thanking him and trying to push him off. Sasara then panics, realizing his lie about his younger sister would result in certain doom.

Sasara tries to come clean, but Samatoki grabs his shoulders and smiles sweetly, returning the comment of saying he can do anything for him. Finding his options plummeting, Sasara grabs a random girl of the street and asks her to fake being his sister, introducing her to Samatoki. This heads downhill as the actress forgets her role, making Samatoki suspicious but nevertheless trying to start the comedy routine with Sasara.

Sasara is even more scared after seeing Samatoki bought a high-tech mic for their skits, nervously sweating with a guilty conscience as Samatoki tells the actress she has an amazing older brother. Realizing he’s backed into a corner, Sasara dramatically rolls over and over on the floor, bowing to Samatoki and screaming he’s sorry while crying. Sasara explains he was lying about his younger sister the entire time, so Samatoki grabs the mic, snaps it and half, and chases Sasara before beating him up ruthlessly.

MCD[]

Later down the line, together Sasara and Samatoki formed Mad Comic Dialogue and become an unstoppable duo together. Sasara constantly provokes Samatoki and tries to do comedy routines with him, frequently finding no success. Samatoki has trouble countering Sasara’s insults. Sasara would pester Samatoki repeatedly and call their duo "Sasasama."

Together in MCD, they claim territory during the war and fight alongside each other, revered and feared by enemies.

Break-up[]

Samatoki’s memories

Samatoki thinks back on all their memories

Sasara is brainwashed by the True Hypnosis Mic to detest Samatoki, his partner. As a result, he calls Samatoki to meet up with him, announcing, "It's over." Samatoki is startled when Sasara says he's going to leave the team, and Samatoki begins to darken and ask if this is a joke. Samatoki remains dormant, asking once more if Sasara is serious. To this he nods, and Sasara begins to explain he's been fed up with "the way you talk, the way you act, your stupid face, your personality" and claiming he hates it. Samatoki looks away, hurt by his words and scowling. He mutters, "I thought you were my best friend...But you...clearly didn't think the same..." as he goes over a reel of memories he shared with Sasara.

With this, Sasara begins to break from the mindhacking and in a panic remembers Ramuda's face, saying, "I-I need... to tell you..." before slipping back into his brainwashed state. He finishes the sentence explaining he needs to tell Samatoki everything he's been holding inside, making Samatoki stare expressionlessly. Sasara grins and takes out his mic, starting to string a rap of how he's completely fed up with Samatoki. However, Samatoki remains injured on the ground, declaring he has no reason to fight back. Sasara is confused and begins to free from the brainwashing at Samatoki's genuine words, before hitting him with one last attack, walking off. Samatoki silently mutters Sasara's name.

Samatoki cries

Samatoki cries for the first time after years

After the fight, Samatoki begins to cry after remembering Sasara's smile. Samatoki slams the table and scoffs, angered at how he was crying for the first time. He reminds himself that he swore to never cry after his mother killed his father, but he falters momentarily, still heartbroken as he tries to suck it up.

Reunion[]

Before reuniting, Sasara refers to Samatoki as an old friend and tenses whenever someone brings up their break-up. After the brainwashing came off, Sasara explained he was unsure why he detested Samatoki at that time and that his memory since then was blocked off. Though, he’s shown to be reminiscent and glum at the idea of their old partnership during the territory war.

When Ramuda confesses that he controlled Sasara’s mind with the True Hypnosis Mic, he remains silent and in mute disbelief. Nevertheless, Sasara comments there’s many foul things he’d like to say to Ramuda, but that it wouldn’t change the past. Afterwords, Sasara is quick to end the conversation and turn the attention elsewhere.

“Samatoki and Sasara make MCD! That’s the only thing that makes sense, it’s destiny!”
— Sasara’s lyrics he uses in the fight against the True Hypnosis Mic

Sasara, Kuko, and Ramuda run up to help Samatoki, Ichiro, and Jakurai respectively. Samatoki hears Sasara’s voice and murmurs his name weakly, before they fiercely team up to take down Honobono

Samatoki“There’s no way we’re goin' down like this, right, Sasara?!”
Sasara“Heh, you need to learn to respect good ol’ Sasara-san, Samatoki!”

After they fend off Honobono, Samatoki punches Sasara to make them even from their break-up, much to Sasara’s complaint. Nevertheless, their confrontation ends on a lighter note as Sasara grabs Samatoki and tries to stop him from beating up Ichiro, before they promise to beat each other up next time, huffing and walking off.

Fanon[]

Sasasama is a popular ship within the fandom. Fans initially enjoyed their dynamic in the TDD/DOD era and how Samatoki is annoyed by Sasara's pestering yet deeply cares for him. Fans joke about Sasasama divorcing and this is the subject of angst. However, Sasasama is often the subject of critics, since some dislike their relationship since Sasara saw Samatoki as a replacement for Rosho, and therefore some fans view the dynamic as unhealthy for Sasara. At the same time, this critique is used as a theme in fan works and generally fuels Sasasama's popularity due to the interesting dynamic revealed in DH BAT. Though, as a result, Sasarosho is Sasasama's main rival, along with some Samatoki ships like Samajyu to a lesser extent.
