Satosumi is the femslash ship between Sato and Natsumi Kuzuryu from the Danganronpa fandom.
Canon[]
Natsumi and Sato have known each other since middle school, where they were in the same photography club along with Mahiru Koizumi. Natsumi’s jealousy of Mahiru’s skill as a photographer led her to start bullying Mahiru. Sato became involved in the conflict because of her relationship with Mahiru. Because they are best friends, Sato tried her best to defend Mahiru. As a result, she became another subject of ire.
When Natsumi and Sato began attending school at Hope’s Peak Academy, they were put in the same class and Sato became the primary target of Natsumi’s bullying. Natsumi would often taunt her for her defensiveness of Mahiru and for being a Reserve Course student. Natsumi also shared a deep admiration for a Main Course student, her brother Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, but considered herself an Ultimate and failed to see the irony in her criticisms of Sato.
Beyond teasing, Natsumi would often threaten Mahiru with violence and lethal harm, though she claimed she didn’t mean it. Their fighting escalated into a near physical altercation that was separated by Mahiru. On the same day they almost got into another fight, but this time it was intercepted by Hajime Hinata. Hajime warned Natsumi not to continue intimidating Mahiru and Sato, but the damage was done and her body was found after being murdered by Sato the next day.
Both Natsumi and Sato are passionate people with quick tempers, their fights quickly escalating into attempts to slap or throw punches. While both are violent and aggressive, Sato seems to be more volatile as Natsumi allegedly never intended to inflict lethal harm upon her.
They also share their fierce determination and strong will. Natsumi never gave up on entering the Main Course even though her will to live was denied by Sato when Hajime confronted her about Natsumi's death. Sato's will was shown by the lengths she went to protect Mahiru, even though it appears she regretted murdering Natsumi as seen by her subsequent mental breakdown.
Most of their conflict is caused by Sato's possessive and defensive personality and Natsumi's aggression caused by insecurity. Originally Sato attempted to talk to Natsumi on the day of Natsumi's murder, but when Natsumi threatened to hurt Sato along with Mahiru she lost her temper and impulsively attacked Natsumi.
Fanon[]
Because of Natsumi and Sato’s roles as side characters, there is very little content of them in comparison to other Danganronpa ships. Despite this, there is a small community of fans dedicated to their characters and stories and Satosumi is one of the more popular ships. It also is slightly controversial due to the aggressive nature of their canon relationship.
It is a common theme in Satosumi fanfiction for there to be some sort of circumstance that requires the two to start begrudgingly tolerating each other. Usually it is for the sake of a third party, typically Hajime or Mahiru. Other times it is a result of gaining awareness of their own flaws or finding a common enemy in Hope's Peak Academy. Their tolerance then often grows into affection as Sato addresses her anger issues and defensiveness while Natsumi works on her insecurity and aggression.
