- —Galadriel[1]
Saurondriel is the het ship between Sauron and Galadriel from the Middle Earth fandoms.
Canon[]
The Silmarillion[]
Galadriel possessed Nenya, one of three Elven-rings of Power, which Sauron sought after and desired most of all. Yet, he was unsuccessful in ever finding or discovering them.[2]
Unfinished Tales[]
- “He perceived at once that Galadriel would be his chief adversary and obstacle, and he endeavoured therefore to placate her, bearing her scorn with outward patience and courtesy.”
- — The History of Galadriel and Celeborn, Unfinished Tales
During the Second Age, Sauron posed as an emissary of the Valar, disguising himself as the fair formed "Annatar," and returned to Eregion in Middle-earth to deceive the elves and form the Rings of Power. Though the full story is unknown, Sauron quickly saw Galadriel as his main adversary, and he worked hard to appease her as she scorned him. It is speculated that she did not know Annatar to be Sauron, yet suspected he was foe, though still lived alongside him in Eregion for around 200 years. Sauron eventually persuaded the brotherhood of Elven jewel-smiths to revolt against Galadriel and her husband, Celeborn and sieze power over Eregion. Galadriel left and began her rule over Lórinand in direct defense to Sauron.
Sauron left Eregion after the making of the Rings of Power began but returned when Celebrimbor revolted against Sauron after the discovery of the making of the One Ring. Galadriel suggested they disperse the Three Elven rings so that Sauron may not find them. Sauron took the Nine and Seven Rings after taking Celebrimbor captive. Sauron killed Celebrimbor when he did not give up the location of the Three Rings but surmised that they had been given to Galadriel and Gil-galad.[3] Galadriel yearned for the West but stayed in Middle-earth while Sauron remained "unconquered."[4]
The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies[]
In Do Guldur, Galadriel faces Sauron with the help of Elrond and Saruman in saving Gandalf. Sauron's voice can be heard in the darkness, reciting the Ring poem, and Galadriel finishes his words. The Nazgul appear before her and Sauron warns her, "You cannot fight the shadow. Even now you fade. One light alone in the darkness." She tells him she is not alone, and Saruman and Elrond join her in fighting off the Nazgul. Once the Nine are defeated, the eye of Sauron materializes and Sauron's armored form can be seen within. He tells her the time of the Elves is over but Galadriel, her strength almost spent, faces him with great force, and with darkness and light radiating from her body, contends that Sauron, "servant of Morgoth," has no power here. Sauron appears more clearly now, and Galadriel continues, declaring him "nameless, faceless, formless." Sauron answers with his own commands, chanting the Black Speech. In this showdown between Galadriel and Sauron, Galadriel finally bellows, "go back to the void from whence you came!" and Sauron retreats East to Mordor. Galadriel admonishes, "the spirit of Sauron endured."[5]
The Lord of the Rings[]
- “I say to you, Frodo, that even as I speak to you, I perceive the Dark Lord and know his mind, or all of his mind that concerns the Elves. And he gropes ever to see me and my thought. But still the door is closed!”
- — Galadriel
In the Third Age, Galadriel and the rest of the White Council, attack Sauron at his stronghold in Dol Guldur, where he has re-emerged. Sauron retreats to Mordor.[6]
Approximately 78 years later, the Fellowship shelters in Lothlórien, an Elven realm ruled over by Galadriel and her husband Celeborn. Galadriel shields Lothlórien from Sauron's sight with Nenya, the Ring of Adamant and her Ring of Power. After Galadriel allows Frodo to look into the Mirror of Galadriel and he sees the Eye of Sauron, Galadriel tells Frodo that she, too, sees him and is able to perceive Sauron and know his mind. Sauron in turn actively seeks her and her thoughts as well but she is able to deny him. She tells Frodo that Sauron suspects Galadriel possesses the Ring but does not truly know. If Frodo were to fail his mission, then Sauron would soon be able to detect them.
Frodo offers Galadriel the One Ring, created by Sauron, and she's tempted, expressing that for many years she wondered what she might do with the "Great Ring." She tells Frodo that evil works in many ways whether or not Sauron lives. When she declares that if she were to take "his Ring," in place of the Dark Lord Sauron, she would be a Queen, beautiful and terrible — all would love her and despair.[1]
The Rings of Power[]
SEASON 1
A SHADOW OF THE PAST
After Morgoth's defeat in a centuries long war, his most devoted servant, Sauron, began his rule over the Orcs of Middle-earth and Galadriel describes him as "a cruel and cunning sorcerer." Sauron kills Galadriel's brother, Finrod, and marks him with his symbol. Galadriel vows to devote her life to finding and destroying Sauron for good. She scours the world for centuries, hunting him, but he remains hidden. Galadriel stands firm in her belief that he hides and lies in wait, but the High King wishes for her quest to end. She is sent to return to Valinor for the remainder of her days but on the journey, she jumps ship, fleeing into the Sundering Seas, unable to give up her search for Sauron.[7]
ADRIFT
- I know something of the pain you carry. I grieve for you.
- —Galadriel
Swimming back to Middle-earth through the Sundering Seas, Galadriel happens upon a stranded crew on the open waters. She covers her Elf-ears and approaches. A man places a hand forward to halt her and says, "the tides of fate are flowing, yours may be heading in…or out." The man watches her closely while the crew question her and one rhetorically asks if she looks dangerous, to which the man replies, "looks can be deceiving." They discover she's an elf moments before being attacked by "the worm," an underwater sea creature, and cast Galadriel out. She swims away quickly whilst the man sets himself free from the others on his own raft, both surviving. When the worm disappears, the man steers toward Galadriel and she swims to him. The man offers her a hand and Galadriel reluctantly takes it and climbs aboard. He asks her name; she gives it and he smirks slightly and introduces himself as "Halbrand." Giving her command, he asks, "what's our heading?"
- Give me your hand. Bind yourself to me!
- —Galadriel
They continue East and Galadriel keeps her distance to which Halbrand takes note. They argue with one another about their situation and Halbrand tells her he is just trying to survive. He suspects Galadriel to be a deserter, which angers her. Halbrand confirms her years of suspicions by claiming Orcs chased him from his homeland. Galadriel confides that she knows of the pain he carries, and she grieves for him. He simply stares at her, thinking. They argue again when Galadriel admits that she seeks to destroy their enemy, and the Orcs responsible for their suffering. Quickly though, a storm approaches, and they fight for their lives at sea. Galadriel ties herself to the raft and outstretches her hand for Halbrand, shouting for him to take it and bind himself to her. Before he's able to grab her, lightning strikes the raft, and she falls deep into the waters. Sinking fast, Halbrand dives in and saves her. They swim back to the raft, and she offers him her hand. At light, a ship finds them asleep and floating aimlessly on the raft.[8]
ADAR
Galadriel wakes on the ship and Halbrand, who is already up, brings her food. She asks him about their hosts. He makes a remark about the food not being poisoned, for humans at least, and he watches her, smirking. They're brought up on deck and meet the ship captain, Elendil. They soon realize they're approaching the Island Kingdom of Númenor and both look upon it with great awe and wonder. Together, they're escorted through the city to the palace to meet the Queen Regent, Míriel. Galadriel tells Halbrand the history of Númenor along the way.
Halbrand suggests to Galadriel that they show caution and restraint in their dealings. Meeting Míriel, Halbrand whispers for Galadriel to kneel and Míriel declares that no one kneels in Númenor, and Halbrand whispers again his apology. Galadriel, to her detriment, is forward in her demands and Halbrand, more sensitive to their circumstances, skillfully persuades the Queen Regent into a bargain allowing them to remain in Númenor while they consider Galadriel's requests. Halbrand pleads with Galadriel to remain peaceful, and he holds out his hand. She takes his arm, and he pulls her in, and with a slight of hand, smiles and presents her with her sword, which was taken by Elendil in their capture.
After Halbrand is ironically arrested and jailed for fighting with some locals, Galadriel checks in on him. She tells him he does not belong on this island and through her discoveries, believes Halbrand must be a lost King to the Southlands and attempts to convince him to return with her. He tells her that he is not the hero she seeks but Galadriel tells him she believes their meeting is greater than fate and destiny. She asks him to come with her to Middle-earth and together, redeem both their bloodlines.[9]
THE GREAT WAVE
Galadriel oversteps with the Queen Regent and is imprisoned in a nearby cell alongside Halbrand. When she arrives, Halbrand quips, "Don't tell me. Tavern brawl?" She tells him, "Sedition" and he looks at her and laughs. She spends her time pacing and Halbrand, now lying down, watches her and attempts to give her advice and change her approach. He advises that she must learn to identify what her opponent most fears and instead of exploiting it, help them master it, so that she may master them. She is persuaded by Halbrand's words. Though, he compares her manner to that of a horse, to which she admonishes, and he tells her to stop trying to convince him to leave Númenor. Guards suddenly arrive to escort Galadriel back to the Elves and Halbrand smirks as she looks to him and she breaks free of her chains and escapes. Halbrand convinces them to let her go.[10]
PARTINGS
- Halbrand – “You used me. After I all but begged you to let me be.”
- Galadriel – “I have just convinced Númenor to send five ships and 500 men to aid your people and place a crown upon your head. Many might assume you used me.”
Míriel and Galadriel summon Halbrand to confer about the enemy, under the impression that he wishes to return to Middle-earth and unite his people. This is news to Halbrand, however, as he currently has no intentions to do so. Galadriel and Halbrand argue; he renounces his supposed title and tells her to find another head to crown.
- Stop fighting me, and together, let us fight them.
- —Galadriel
Later, Galadriel visits Halbrand working alone in the armor foundry with an apology and her final plea. He continues to deny her proposal but she is persistent. He is burdened by an unknown and dark personal past which he believes that once everyone, Galadriel included, discovers it, they will reject him. However, Galadriel emboldens him with words from her late brother, Finrod, "sometimes to find the light, we must first touch the darkness." He turns to her and asks, "what do you know of darkness?" She doesn't answer.
Set off, he moves toward her, and more intensely, asks Galadriel who it is she has lost. She tells him about her brother, who was killed by servants of Sauron. "So this is about vengeance?" Halbrand questions. They argue as he wonders aloud why she keeps fighting. She exclaims, because she is unable to stop. Finally, Galadriel reveals to him why she was in the Sundering Seas and with tears in both their eyes, Halbrand apologizes to Galadriel for her brother and for all that has happened to her. She pleads with him again, to leave Númenor and fight with her. Upon her exit, she places her hand over his and returns the pouch with Halbrand's crest that he had thrown out.
The next day, Halbrand has a change of heart and decides to join Galadriel in Middle-earth. Leaving Númenor, Galadriel approaches Halbrand on the ship, both in battle armor and with unwavering eye contact; She offers her hand and they grip each other's forearms as comrades. Halbrand smiles and the ship sets sail to Middle-earth. They glance at one another again as they set off.[11]
UDÛN
- Halbrand – “Fighting at your side…I felt…If I could just hold on to that feeling, keep it with me always, bind it to my very being, then I…”
- Galadriel – “I felt it, too.”
Galadriel and Halbrand ride together, with their army in tow, to the Southlands just in time for battle against Adar and the Orcs. They fight alongside one another showing great strength and combat skill. When Adar flees on horseback, Galadriel chases after him and Halbrand noticing, is not far behind. Halbrand knocks Adar off his horse and almost kills him before Galadriel yells for him to stop. Galadriel needs Adar alive but Halbrand exclaims she does not know what he did. Galadriel watches carefully and continues to ease Halbrand from his revenge. After Galadriel interrogates Adar, she also is angered and almost kills him when Halbrand stops her. She leaves and Halbrand finds Galadriel sitting alone in the woods and joins her. Galadriel keeps her head forward and thanks Halbrand for pulling her back, but he affirms it was she who pulled him back first. She tells him to be free of the past, whatever it is, and he admits, until today, he didn't think it was possible. Halbrand reveals that he wishes he could hold on to the feeling of fighting at Galadriel's side and bind it to his very being. Galadriel admits she felt this, too. They face each other and hold their gaze, when the moment is interrupted by a soldier. Halbrand looks to her once more as he leaves but Galadriel keeps her eyes forward.[12]
THE EYE
- Well, my friend. It seems fate has in store for us one more raft
- —Galadriel
After the eruption of Mount Doom, Galadriel, disoriented, shouts for Halbrand in the fiery ruins but does not find him. A day later, when Galadriel eventually finds her way back to the encampment, she is surprised to learn that Halbrand lives. She finds him gravely injured and, with relief, tells him she thought he had died. She inspects his wound and explains it will need Elvish medicine and they will need to ride quickly to get care. Speaking to Galadriel, Halbrand resolves that he will not give up on the Southlands and neither will she. To that, a hint of a smile appears on their faces. They walk out side by side as the people of the Southlands chant, "strength to the King." They give each other one last look before taking off for Eregion.[13]
ALLOYED
Galadriel and Halbrand reach Eregion six days after they find Halbrand injured, and the Elves immediately tend to him. Galadriel watches over him briefly. During his recovery, Halbrand makes his way to Celebrimbor's workshop looking for Galadriel but instead he meets Celebrimbor and learns of their plans to use the mithril ore. Later, Galadriel grows suspicious of Halbrand after hearing Adar's phrasing of Sauron's plans echoed by Celebrimbor. Secretly, she inquires about his lineage and only moments later Halbrand finds her in a courtyard alone and expresses to her his gratitude and wonderment for his newfound circumstances. She tells him their scales are now balanced, as he had saved her. He denies this and tells her that she's done far more for him; she believed in him and pushed him like no one else could have and he will never forget it. He places a hand on her shoulder and moves close to her ear, and whispers, "I'll see to it that no one else does either."
Later, when Galadriel visits Celebrimbor's workshop where he, Elrond and Halbrand have been working to create a crown from the mithril, she quietly receives the scroll regarding Halbrand's lineage. She leaves to read it privately and Halbrand watches her go. He finds her by the river Glanduin, clearly disturbed by whatever it is she has in her hands. He expresses his excitement for their progress with the ore. He beckons her to come and see but she stops him, demanding he tell her who he really is. Acting confused, he says that she knows who he is. However, Galadriel has discovered that there is no King of the Southlands and his entire backstory is a lie. Halbrand's demeanor instantly changes and he approaches her with a smirk on his face. Galadriel is clearly betrayed and in denial, remembering that "Halbrand" saved her and fought beside her. Whispering the question she already knows the answer to, she demands, "tell me your name" and he replies, "I have been awake since before the breaking of the first silence. In that time, I have had many names." She now knows for certain that he is Sauron, whom she has been looking for all this time, and she brings her blade to strike but he easily stops her and forces her mind into an illusion.
Galadriel falls to the ground, suddenly in Valinor, and she sees her brother, Finrod, whom Sauron has taken form. He deceptively tries to tempt her to darkness, using words that may appeal to her. She is briefly lured by the fantasy but is able to walk away from him. Sauron yells, "look at me!" and they're abruptly back on the raft where she first met "Halbrand." He insists that Galadriel knows the real him, knows he is her friend and with tears in his eyes, he explains his motivations. Though he deceived her, Sauron tells her that when he told her the truth, that he had done evil, she had said she did not care. He tries to persuade her into accepting this truth, for their "future" but she tells him, there is no such future. In the water's reflection, he shows Galadriel a glimpse of what they might be, together — he as the Dark Lord and her, standing by his side. Thus, he proposes they rule together, as he is the only one who can truly see her greatness.
- Sauron – “All others look on you with doubt. I alone can see your greatness. I alone can see your light.”
- Galadriel – “You would make me a tyrant.”
- Sauron – “I would make you a queen. Fair as the sea and the Sun. Stronger than the foundations of the earth.”
- Galadriel – “And you. My king. The Dark Lord.”
- Sauron – “No, not dark. Not with you at my side.”
Galadriel appears tempted by his offer of making her a powerful queen. Sauron suggests that having Galadriel by his side would balance out his darkness. This is their great purpose; Galadriel binds Sauron to the light and he in turn, binds her to power. Softly he claims, "together, we can save this Middle-earth." Galadriel sees that what he truly means is to rule Middle-earth. Angering Sauron, she puts a blade to his throat, and declares that she will never be at his side. A storm brews as he exclaims that without him, the world will darken and her people will fade; She needs him. Furiously, they clash with words. Eyes darkening, he asks Galadriel what she'll do when the Elves learn she was his ally, when she tells them, "that Sauron lives because of you!" She shouts back, "you will die because of me!" Both screaming, Galadriel raises her sword when she is suddenly drowning once again.
Galadriel is awakened in the water by Elrond, and she cries. "Halbrand" is gone (to Mordor). Galadriel tells Elrond and Celebrimbor that she doubts Halbrand will ever return and that they must never deal with him again.[14]
SEASON 2
Moments[]
- PARTINGS 1.05[15]
- Halbrand watches as Galadriel shows off her extraordinary sword fighting skills against the Sea Guard cadets. Afterward, he impressively lifts a sword off the ground with a fancy maneuver and Galadriel reckons she's never known a smith's aide to have such a talent.
Behind the Scenes[]
- SEASON 2
- “Galadriel obviously was in love with Halbrand. She was very attracted to him. So when Sauron changes shape… Sauron knows this because he gets into her head, so he knows what she’s thinking, what she’s feeling. So when he immediately takes Halbrand’s shape, he completely destabilizes her because that was her weakness. She had very strong feelings for the King, for Halbrand, obviously in the first season.”
- — Charlotte Brändström, director[16]
- “He tried it again with Galadriel, inviting her in. He basically proposed to her, come be with me, be my queen, and let’s rule her Middle-earth together. You’re a light to my ambition, peanut butter to my jelly, let’s go. And she said no, she rejected him.”
- — J.D. Payne, showrunner[17]
- Nerds of Color – “We've gotten pretty invested in the "Haladriel" dynamic. Might we see more of it this season?”
- Charlie Vickers – “They have a very complex and deep relationship that I think will run as a theme throughout the whole show… because they symbolize good and evil.[18]”
- Total Film – “Where we left season 1, Galadriel is such a huge part of his life. What's his thinking towards her going into season 2? Do you think she's ever present in his psyche?”
- Charlie Vickers – “Yeah, I think they're connected if not by proximity then by their psyche, right? Because they're higher beings so I'm sure it runs deeper than them being in the same place together. I think the fact when she turns him down at the end of Season 1, it pisses him off quite a bit I think and I'd be lying if I said that there wasn't a a part of him which thinks, 'I can get her'...you know? 'I can get her to join me.'[19]”
- Yvette Nicole Brown – “Galadriel is forced to admit a grave mistake that she made at the end of Season 1. What lessons do you think she's learned at the start of Season 2?”
- Morfydd Clark – “Well don't trust handsome men, I'd say.[20]”
- Fan in Hall H – “One of the fan favorite romances was between Hot Sauron and Galadriel. I'm really worried that at least based on the trailers that we've seen so far there aren't any scenes together in which we can see that sizzling chemistry. Can you give me a little bit of hope, and for all the fanfiction writers in the room...that we are gonna get more of Hot Sauron and Galadriel in season 2?”
- Charlie Vickers – “I think there is hope for sure. What can we say? [Say it, say it!] Yeah, I think we will![21]”
- During San Diego Comic Con '24, Morfydd Clark posted a photo of her and Charlie (Sauron) wearing matching Sauron and Galadriel friendship bracelets.[22]
- (Fan theory) – “Halbrand will try to convince Galadriel to join him.”
- Morfydd Clark – “I mean, he already has. So, I don't see why he'd necessarily stop now. Poor Galadriel, that really went badly for her. I'm really excited about where they'll go together.[23]”
- SEASON 1
- Nerdist – “There are a lot of viewers who wanted Galadriel to accept Sauron's offer, despite what he did in the past and what they know he'll do in the future. Has that reaction surprised you, considering who you’re playing?”
- Charlie Vickers – “I have been surprised by that. A few people have said that to me. But I think it's great. Whatever our intentions were as performers, in creating this relationship, we don't have ownership of how people interpret it. So it's awesome for people to interpret it as a romantic thing, or however it might be interpreted. It was slightly surprising to me, as it seems to go against what my thoughts were when we were doing it, but I think it's cool. I think it's really cool.[24]”
- “I think that romance just doesn’t kind of cut it for them. It’s cosmic and it would be a Middle-earth shattering relationship should they enter into it”
- — Morfydd Clark[25]
- “I love the idea that people think it’s romantic, and it’s really cool and interesting if somebody would think that, but I personally don’t think it is”
- — Charlie Vickers[26]
- “I kind of want to keep it ambiguous… I don't know. I mean, they definite vibe. Because, they're very powerful but I'm not sure.”
- — Morfydd on whether or not Galadriel was tempted by Sauron's offer in Rings of Power[27]
- “I like to think of it as a cosmic connection, in that he has spent a lot of time by himself — a long, long time. And I think when he meets her, he's finally meeting someone that's on his level closer to him, who has been around for a very long time. They've had this real connection, and he sees in her an opportunity. While I don't think it's romantic, I think it's really interesting and cool that a lot of people read into it like that, and that's the beauty of making things like this — there's no right answer. But I think it's more on the level of, we're two very experienced people who know a lot more than most other people we meet. And also, I think when it comes down to it at the very end of the season, he thinks he can use her to get what he wants, as sad as that is. It's like a bit of a toxic relationship.”
- — Charlie Vickers[28]
- “I don't think it was necessarily romantic, but whatever connection they had was enormous. Whether it was power, friendship, whether it was romance, it was just completely beyond what they felt before. And it shows with people shipping them….I’m a fan of characters myself, I get it. I feel honored that me and Charlie managed to create that.”
- — Morfydd Clark[29]
Fanon[]
The showrunners of Rings of Power were inspired to explore a Sauron/Galadriel relationship based on a passage from The Fellowship of the Ring, in which Galadriel tells Frodo, "I perceive the dark Lord and know his mind, or all his mind that concerns the elves. And he gropes ever to see me and my thought. But still the door is closed!"[1] The writers felt that, as a particularly loaded statement, it alluded to some kind of relationship.[30]
Initially considered a rarepair, fans often thought of Galadriel with Sauron's fair form, "Annatar." The ship remains relatively "controversial" in the Middle Earth fandom as a whole but is generally more favorable for those who are "pro-shipping" and enjoyed Amazon Prime's adaptation, as it was bolstered by shippers of Haladriel, the ship between Galadriel and Sauron's guise as the Southlander, Halbrand. Since growing in popularity, the ship has become an unexpectedly fun and favored pairing, having taken on a new life by fans of forbidden romance, enemies to lovers, powerful villains and more specifically, "hot Sauron" or "sexy Sauron."[31][24] The demand for more Sauron and Galadriel in the series continues to grow[32][33] and the pair are often featured together in promotional materials and photoshoots.[34][35]
Saurondriel is Galadriel's most popular pairing on AO3 and the second for Sauron, due in large to The Rings of Power, as the ship's presence was essentially non-existent on the site prior to the series. The earliest known online fanfiction was posted in 2002 on FanFiction.net. Though, its history dates much farther back.
Fanworks typically embrace the "light" and "dark" motifs, not shying away from Sauron in his Dark Lord form. Artwork and fan fiction frequently features Galadriel accepting Sauron's offer to stand beside him as his Queen, ruling Middle-earth together. Other popular works have Galadriel meeting Mairon, Sauron's original and uncorrupted form, or delve into the relationship between Galadriel and Annatar in the Second Age.
The ship name "Saurondriel" is an all-inclusive portmanteau for Sauron and Galadriel, whereas "Haladriel" is still used by the fandom to specify the Rings of Power iteration of Sauron with Galadriel. Similarly, "Annadriel" can be used for when Sauron appears as Annatar and subsequent changes apply to all forms and variations of Sauron and Galadriel.
