- So, in the end, you were "betrayed," too...
So, you're hated by people, too...
So, that's it? That's really your wish?
"To never have been born at all"... That's not a fate you should wish for.
[...]
Nobody can define who you are...
Or deny the true feelings of your heart
Now, remember your name—
...Durin
It's alright now... - —Wanderer learned that both of them we're hated and betrayed ,which led him to comfort the Simulanka Drangon, Durin.[1]
ScaraDurin is the friendship between Wanderer and Durin (also known as Mini Durin) from the Genshin Impact fandom.
Canon[]
Background[]
Wanderer was originally created by the Electro Archon, Raiden Ei, shortly after the Cataclysm 500 years ago. Similarly, Durin was a shadow dragon created by the alchemist Rhinedottir, also known as "Gold," during the same time period. Both characters were born out of the events of the Cataclysm, each shaped by the trauma and betrayals that followed.
Durin, despite being a dragon of destruction, had a gentle heart. He dreamed of befriending the people of Mondstadt and wanted to share stories about his origin and creator. Tragically, he was unaware of the harm he caused. He believed his poisonous blood was a “great blessing” and saw his rampage as a dream in which he sang and danced with Dvalin, Barbatos, and the people of Mondstadt. Even after being mortally wounded by Dvalin, Durin held no hatred and only wished they had met under better circumstances. Wanderer, before facing betrayal and regaining his memories, was also a kind and curious soul. After his creation, he viewed the world with hope, but over time, the cruelty he experienced changed him. When the Traveler first meets him in Sumeru, he is distant and uncertain, searching for purpose while struggling with the fact that he lacks a human heart. After regaining his memories and confronting the truth of his past, he returns to a colder, more cynical version of himself, similar to his time as Scaramouche—arrogant, bitter, and mistrustful of others. Wanderer’s unexpected connection to Durin is revealed during the encounter with Simulanka Durin, a creation by the Hexenzirkel witch Andersdotter based on the real Durin from Teyvat. Upon meeting him, Wanderer expresses a rare moment of sympathy, recognizing that they are both beings who were betrayed and misunderstood.
Mini Durin was granted a human form by Albedo using alchemy. This transformation was made possible when the Simulanka version of Mini Durin replaced the original Durin's remains on Dragonspine, effectively allowing Mini Durin to be the one revived and brought into the real world.
Unlike the original Durin—who is more aggressive, beast-like, and driven by primal instincts—the Mini Durin created in a storybook reflects the gentler, purer aspects of the dragon’s soul. His presence helps to balance the darkness of the original, echoing a similar dynamic seen in Wanderer and Scaramouche. Just as Wanderer represents the reformed, more self-aware version of his former self, Mini Durin embodies what Durin might have been without corruption—hopeful, kind, and deeply misunderstood.

Wanderer is chosen as the hero in Simulanka to face and save a dragon called Durin, who has long been feared by the island's inhabitants. As the group pursues the dragon through its lair, Wanderer remains quiet and focused, eventually stating, “He’s just up ahead,” while Nilou questions if the dragon is luring them in, and Navia reflects that they might’ve been the ones who pushed it into a corner. When Paimon insists they just want to ask about its past, Wanderer responds sharply, “He’s had year after year of people coming here to try to take his head. If you ask me, his reaction is perfectly normal.” Though Nilou hopes they can calm it down, Wanderer prepares for a fight, warning, “Sometimes… it takes a little force for someone to finally wake up.” As battle begins, he refers to the dragon as a “stubborn beast” and tells the Traveler, “Watch out! If you fall, you’re on your own this time!” even as the group dodges powerful attacks and throws bombs into the dragon’s open mouth. When two more dragon heads appear, Wanderer warns again, “He’s getting serious… Don’t get hit!” and urges the Traveler to strike quickly. Just as they land the second attack, Wanderer pauses and senses something is off—"…! Wait!"—before the dragon releases a dark mist that engulfs him and pulls him into another space. Disoriented, he mutters, “Are we… inside the black mist?” before noticing something up ahead.
Inside the black mist, Wanderer hears a woman ask, “Are you sure you want to create this child, M, even after what I told you about his fate?” as “M” solemnly replies that despite knowing the story ends in abandonment, she wishes to give the child a happier ending in another world—because “his heart is so full of love.” As she entrusts this fate to her child with a name mirroring his real-world counterpart, Wanderer scoffs, “Hmph... More boring ‘fate’ talk,” only to witness the dragon, silently watching a memory where “M” promises to become a star in the sky and watch over him even after her death, asking him to be kind and seek friends. The Wanderer stands quietly and mutters, “So, in the end, you were ‘betrayed,’ too,” before watching another memory—of a little squirrel bringing the dragon food in secret, saying “Everyone says you're a bad dragon, but you're always nice to me,” only for the child to be dragged away by a frightened mother who believes he’s being kidnapped. The dragon’s memories end with a heartbreaking wish: “to never have been born at all,” prompting Wanderer to softly but firmly reject it—“That’s not a fate you should wish for”.

Wanderer comforts the Simulanka Dragon.
In the following cutscene, Wanderer reaching out with resolve, tells the dragon, “Nobody can define who you are… Or deny the true feelings of your heart. Now, remember your name… Durin.” As Durin roars and calms, his red eyes turned blue, the mist dissolves, but the ground collapses and Wanderer immediately dives after him, which also the Traveler rushes toward them, possibly intending to help, but the platform they're standing on also collapses. Luckily, Kirara rescues the Traveler just in time. Back on solid ground, as Navia asks what happened and Paimon wonders who “Durin” really is, Wanderer quietly confirms, “He’s fine,” then names Durin aloud, prompting Paimon to connect him to Dragonspine's Dragon who also named Durin created by Rhinedottir. When asked why he’s been acting strange, Wanderer finally shares the truth of what he saw in the mist—revealing they were not illusions, but Durin’s memories—before leading the group onward with the words, “Come with me. The answer to all of this can be found below.”
Upon discovering a hidden study that belonged to the Goddess of Fate—revealed to be “M,” a member of the Hexenzirkel—Wanderer leads the group through clues and journals that detail Simulanka’s origins and M’s bond with her sisters, including Alice. As they uncover heartfelt messages from M's journal and final letter, it becomes clear that she believed in the people of Simulanka shaping their own fate. Soon after, the group finds Simulanka’s Durin depicted looking at a star, and they realize his deep longing for connection. When they finally meet him again, Wanderer gently tells him, “It’s alright now, Durin. Nobody here wants to hurt you.” Durin, burdened with guilt, questions, “Why would you say that? ...I’m the one who hurts people.” Paimon tries to comfort him, and Wanderer scolds him, calling the wish “so stupid,” but ultimately reveals his understanding: “Anyone with eyes can see that all you want to do is get along with everyone.” Wanderer acknowledges Durin’s desire for friendship and forgiveness, calling out his need for acceptance. When Durin laments the curse that turns everything he touches into toy blocks, Nilou asks him to make a wish to the Goddess of Fate. She blesses him, followed by Navia, Kirara, and finally Wanderer, who hesitates but then says, “I, the Hero of this world, give you my blessing… May you find acceptance in this world. Also… speaking as someone who’d like to be your friend, I wish you all the best for the future.” The Traveler, moved, smiles genuinely at Wanderer before giving their blessing for Durin.
After Durin transforms into a smaller, non-destructive form, he marvels, “Does this mean...!” Navia calls him cute, and Nilou asks how he feels. Durin excitedly tests his new body and realizes he no longer causes destruction. When he expresses uncertainty about his past actions, asking, “What about all the things that I did before?” Wanderer responds straightforwardly, “That’s simple—just go out there and atone. You could fill in the footprints you left on the ground, or help the people around the Broken Sea get home.” Durin then hesitantly asks, “You’ll come along and help me, right, Hat Guy?” to which Wanderer, clearly caught off guard, replies, “Huh? Why would I do that?” Durin, hurt, reminds him, “But... you said you wanted to be my friend,” leaving both Paimon and the Traveler to give Wanderer a disappointed look. With a frustrated sigh, Wanderer mutters, “You little...! Gah, well maybe I spoke too soon!” Durin’s pout softens as he says, “Huh? But I thought... sniff,” prompting the Traveler to cross their arms with a more disappointed expression, causing Wanderer to finally relent, “Alright, fine! I’ll go with you!” Durin’s joy is evident as he exclaims, “Really?” and Wanderer reassures him, “Yes, really. Lying to you would be no fun anyway.” Durin, overjoyed, thanks him, “Thank you! You’re the first friend to call me by my name.” Wanderer, noticing the Traveler’s teasing smile, remarks, “Let’s go back up. I’m about to suffocate down here.” As Paimon teases him, “Oh, it feels so good to finally see Hat Guy meet his match!” the Traveler chastises her, “Paimon... Don’t be so insensitive...” Paimon, still amused, explains, “Yeah, okay... Paimon just never thought we’d see the day, that’s all.” Navia, noticing the group’s mood shift, adds, “Alright, let’s also head back up, then.” As they prepare to leave, Durin expresses his gratitude, “Thank you for your blessings, everyone... This is the happiest day I’ve had in a really long time.”

Archon Quest Interlude Chapter: Act IV "Paralogism"[]
The Gardener[]
Before departing, Albedo asks the Traveler to visit his office, where they meet Mini Durin. Mini Durin reveals that he’s been secretly helping during the mission and has been hiding in Mondstadt, fearing people might be scared of him. He admits he snuck off to enjoy the Windblume Festival but came for something more important — he and Albedo made a promise to accomplish something great. Mini Durin explains that he plans to replace the Durin on Dragonspine by becoming human through Albedo's alchemy. Though uncertain and scared, he believes this will give his life meaning and balance out the evil part of the original Durin. He shares that Albedo, a synthetic human, sees them as the same — creations seeking purpose. If the experiment succeeds, they will be the only two of their kind, like family. When Paimon asks if “Hat Guy” knows, Mini Durin says he does. Wanderer didn’t stop him, just told him to “get a move on,” which Mini Durin takes as silent support.

Mini Durin's Human Form.
Later, during the Windblume Festival, Albedo performs the ritual on the rooftop of the Knights of Favonius headquarters, with Venti playing music to mask the magic ceremony. As Albedo channels elemental forces through city-wide alchemy arrays, golden energy surrounds Mini Durin. When the ritual ends and the smoke clears, Mini Durin has successfully transformed into a human.
Wanderer's Birthday[]

Wanderer's Birthday Art 2025
In the letter, Wanderer humorously remarks to the Traveler about his mysterious reputation for being absent on his birthday, saying he has no idea how it started. He recounts an encounter in Treasures Street, where Cyno (the "big-eared hat guy") handed him a stack of Genius Invokation TCG cards, claiming to have "high hopes" for him. Sethos (the "green-eyed desert guy") also backed Cyno, encouraging Wanderer to make friends through the game. Although Wanderer finds the idea of forming life-or-death bonds over a card table ridiculous, he admits he'd rather team up with the Traveler than play cards with strangers. He also adds that he gave those cards to Durin and that one day they might stumble upon him on Mondstadt, sitting by the roadside playing cards.
- “I've told you there's no need for gifts, so what's with this handmade thing? The craftsmanship is... mediocre. Is this how you see me?"
- Whatever. I've already gotten plenty of unusual stuff from you, so what's one more? Hmm? Wait, even Durin prepared something?"
- ...Alright, fine. You guys sure come up with plenty of ideas. And look at you, grinning like that. I'm starting to think you're the ones who've been looking forward to this day.”

Fanon[]
Wanderer and Mini Durin have become a beloved friendship in the fandom, largely because of the strong parallels between their characters. Both were hated and betrayed by others, both still love their mother and creator despite everything, and both yearned to become human in order to find meaning in their existence. While Wanderer failed to fully achieve in becoming human, Mini Durin succeeded after replacing the corrupted original Durin from Dragonspine.
When fans found out that there's some people ship Wanderer and Mini Durin romantically, the majority of the fandom strongly disagrees with this portrayal since both Mini Durin and the original Durin have been explicitly stated and described as a child multiple times in-game. In particular, both are consistently depicted with a childlike personality, appearance, and behavior, reinforcing his role as an innocent, youthful character despite being 500 years old. As such, most fans interpret the ScaraDurin dynamic as platonic or familial—often likening it to a big brother/little brother or father/son bond. The romantic interpretation is generally considered a proshipper due to Mini Durin and Original Durin's canonical characterization.
Another popular friendship for Wanderer among the fans is PaiScara. While Wanderer is sarcastic and teasing with Paimon, he shows a softer, more caring side with Mini Durin. This dynamic—where Wanderer acts as a big brother or father figure—appeals to fans who enjoy seeing different sides of his personality. For some, the relationship between Wanderer and Mini Durin is seen as a "big brother" bond, while others prefer to interpret it as a "father and son" relationship. When Wanderer is shipped with the Traveler like Aether (Scaraether) and Lumine (ScaraLumi), Paimon is often shown as a "third wheel". This means she’s left out while the couple spends time together. This idea fits with Paimon's canon personality, since she hates being left behind and often gets upset when the Traveler doesn’t include her. When Mini Durin is introduced to the story, it changes the dynamics of the group, particularly in relation to Paimon. Mini Durin is a small, flying dragon, similar in size and cheerful personality to Paimon. Together, they float beside the Traveler and Wanderer, bringing a sense of balance to the group. Fans love this because it makes Paimon feel less isolated, as she is no longer the only small, flying character in the group.
In fanworks, some explore poly relationships involving the characters, such as ScaraDurin with Paimon, Nahida, Aether, or Lumine. These stories often focus on the fact that all these characters can float or fly, which makes their group look cute and special, with characters like the Traveler and Wanderer taking on more of a protective or parental role for their companions. It’s also worth noting that Paimon, Mini Durin, Nahida, and the Traveler are among the few characters with whom Wanderer is willing to engage, as he has openly distanced himself from others.

Trivia[]
- Wanderer usually only calls others by their real names if he considers them close, such as Durin and, canonically, the Traveler, whom he sees as a friend. Interestingly, he refers to the Traveler either by the title "Traveler" or by the player-chosen name—which canonically represents the name Aether or Lumine uses in Teyvat. This implies that even if he’s close to them, he still uses their in-world chosen name or title rather than their “true” name, which is unknown to the people of Teyvat. Given Wanderer's awareness that the Traveler is not from this world, it’s possible he knows their real name, but chooses not to use it for personal reasons. In contrast, he calls Durin by name, showing their close bond. On the other hand, he addresses Nahida respectfully as “Lesser Lord Kusanali” and often gives nicknames to people he's not close with—such as Cyno, Sethos, and Mona—rather than using their real names.
