The life of Jaime Reyes changed the moment he met Khaji Da. Believing them to simply be a scarab shaped item he happens to come across, before realising that the Scarab is a living being from another planet. The very moment Khaji's Scarab attached itself onto Jamie's spine, he became their host. Much like the Scarab's two previous human hosts and keepers, Jamie uses the powers Khaji granted him to become the next Blue Beetle.

When Jaime was passing by the very building that the second Blue Beetle was having his final battle in, it allowed Khaji Da to find a new host in Jaime moments after their previous "host" died. Not knowing what the blue colored Scarab was as he picks Khaji Da up, thinking that "it" was a harmless item than a creature from another planet, they latch themselves onto the back of the unexciting human teen. Jamie believes that Khaji is an AI of the device that merged with his spine, from how Khaji helps Jamie to master the Scarab's powers and weapons. Even though he doesn't always agree with Khaji's ways of taking out those they see as a threat to the host, from the number of times he kept Khaji Da from killing someone.
Because Jamie is the only one who hears Khaji whenever they speak to him through their bonded link, and didn't tell anyone about the Scarab's "AI", people assume that Jamie is either talking to himself or the person he was already talking to. Before Khaji Da chimes in, from not fully trusting other humans and advices Jamie to be careful. Like not revealing his secret identity to those who don't know he is Blue Beetle. When Jamie did tell someone about Khaji, he described them as "Jimmy Cricket."

Scarab Love is a smaller ship within the DC Comics fandom. Though it's considered a bigger pairing in the Blue Beetle fandom as a whole. It is the rival ship to Bluepulse.
On AO3, the gen version is the most written ship for Khaji Da and the non-binary version is the second most written. The gen ship is also the second most written for Jaime, while the non-binary version is the third most written. The gen relationship is also the most written ship in the Blue Beetle (Movie 2023) tag. The non-binary ship is the fourth most written in the Blue Beetle (Movie 2023) tag. There are currently 95+ gen works and 75+ non-binary works.
