- I've lived with a void in my chest my whole life. My creator didn't need me, and ever since I awoke, I've just drifted from one place to the next.
But then I met you, and I finally realized that reclaiming my missing sins might be my one opportunity to become my true self. - —Wanderer felt empty and lost since his creator abandoned him, drifting without purpose. Meeting Aether made him realize that reclaiming his lost "sins" is his chance to understand himself and become whole.
Scaraether is the slash ship between Scaramouche and Aether from the Genshin Impact fandom.

Unreconciled Stars[]
Act II - "The Crisis Deepens"[]
Scaramouche and Aether first meet in Mondstadt during the limited-time event story Unreconciled Stars. Initially introduced as "???", Scaramouche presents himself as a "vagrant from Inazuma."
There are two different dialogues about Aether's opinion on Scaramouche's clothing choices:
- “That huge hat is quite unique.”
- — Aether tells Scaramouche that his huge hat is quite unique.
- “Those unique clothes are quite beautiful.”
- — Aether tells Scaramouche that his unique clothes are quite beautiful.
While Aether seems intrigued by his unique attire, Scaramouche shows interest in his role as the "Honorary Knight" of the Knights of Favonius. During their brief conversation about the strange meteorites, Scaramouche maintains a curious and pleasant demeanor. However, he departs abruptly upon noticing the Millelith approaching.
Act III - "What the Skies Conceal, the Water Reveals"[]
Their next encounter occurs when Scaramouche greets Aether, Fischl von Luftschloss Narfidort, and Mona Megistus. He casually asks to "join" their conversation, but Mona, sensing his true intentions, quickly teleports the group away. It is then revealed that Scaramouche is not a simple traveler, but rather The Balladeer, the Sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. His pleasant demeanor is exposed as a facade, as his true goal was to strike down Aether. Scaramouche’s cruelty and arrogance are evident in his interactions with his subordinates, contrasting sharply with his earlier act.
Act IV - "Where Ancient Stars Align"[]
Later, they meet again on Musk Reef, where Scaramouche has just escaped the dream induced by touching a meteorite. Declaring that his "research is finished," he puts Aether on guard. However, he dismissively tells him to relax, claiming he's "done playing" for the day and will come for him when he's ready. With an impudent farewell, Scaramouche departs once more.
Inazuma Archon Quest[]
Act III - Omnipresence Over Mortals[]
Delusion Factory[]
In Archon Quest Chapter II: Act III - Omnipresence Over Mortals, Aether’s friend Teppei succumbs to the aftereffects of using a Delusion. Devastated and enraged at the Fatui for orchestrating these events, Aether sets out for revenge by deciding to destroy the Delusion factory.
Inside the factory, he discovers that Scaramouche is overseeing the production of Delusions. He immediately notices his fury and taunts him, remarking that he looks like he wants him dead. Scaramouche claims he is merely following orders and mocks his anger, suggesting he find the real mastermind instead. He ridicules his emotional response, dismissing his strength and accusing him of growing weak. Displaying complete disregard for human life, Scaramouche expresses no regret for the lives lost to the Delusions, further provoking Aether’s wrath.
When Scaramouche mocks Teppei and the soldiers, calling them weak, Aether retaliates with sharp remarks of his own. Just as he prepares to confront him, the domain begins to affect him, causing him to collapse. Scaramouche watches in amusement, laughing as he tells him to embrace his anger, explaining that the factory thrives on it. As Aether struggles, Scaramouche begins to approach him. Before he loses consciousness, he sees Yae Miko arrive and stand before Scaramouche.
Wishes[]
Later, Aether learns from Yae Miko that he was saved from Scaramouche in exchange for Ei's Electro Gnosis. Yae also reveals Scaramouche’s origins: he is a prototype puppet created by Raiden Ei as a proof-of-concept for an indestructible, Gnosis-bearing puppet. Although Ei succeeded in creating him, she decided not to use him and sealed away his power before setting him free, allowing him to awaken as an ordinary human in Shakkei Pavilion.
After his awakening, Scaramouche wandered Inazuma as an ordinary human male, with his own consciousness, until the Fatui took an interest in him. Under the influence of Il Dottore, the Sixth Fatui Harbinger, Scaramouche’s power was unsealed and enhanced, making him even more formidable. Following these modifications, he rose to prominence as "The Balladeer."
Hues of the Violet Garden[]
Act IV - The Palace, Dyed in Black[]
During the limited-time event story Hues of the Violet Garden, Aether and Paimon uncover the truth behind the Five Kasen portraits in Ritou. Albedo finishes covering the final portrait and encourages them to explore until its unveiling. At the ceremony, Albedo reveals a blank canvas. Following hints from Ayato, Aether returns at night and splashes water on the portrait, which reveals Scaramouche (The Balladeer). This discovery makes Aether furious, as he realizes Scaramouche was behind the trouble from years ago.
Sumeru Archon Quests[]
Act III - Dreams, Emptiness, Deception[]
The Gaze from a Certain God[]
Story Teaser- The "Divine" Will - Genshin Impact
Scaramouche's Backstory
In Archon Quest Chapter III: Act III - Dreams, Emptiness, Deception, Aether encounters Haypasia, a scholar who appears to have maintained a connection with the divine. When Aether links to Haypasia's consciousness, he is horrified to discover that the "divine figure" Haypasia has contacted is none other than Scaramouche.
Through this connection, Aether learns about Scaramouche's whole and tragic past. He was betrayed three times by those closest to him: first by his mother, then by his friend, and finally by his hope for the future. These betrayals led Scaramouche to develop a deep hatred for the gods and an unwavering distrust of humanity. Rejecting his past, he renamed himself Kunikuzushi (meaning "country destroyer" in Japanese), vowing to strip himself of all emotion and become a blank slate worthy of wielding the Gnosis he now possesses. In a chilling declaration, Scaramouche threatens to seize control of Sumeru.
After leaving Pardis Dhyai, Aether witnesses Nahida, whose consciousness is inhabiting Katheryne's body, become injured. Nahida transfers her consciousness into Aether’s body, briefly allowing Aether to inhabit Nahida's. During this moment, Aether witnesses the creation of Shouki no Kami, Scaramouche’s terrifying god form.
Act V - Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises[]
As by a God's Side[]

Scaramouche unexpectedly appears behind Aether.
In Archon Quest Chapter III: Act V - Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises, Aether encounters Haypasia once again, who is sleeping in Pardis Dhyai. Concerned, Aether touches her to make sure she is okay, and this physical contact unexpectedly connects him to Scaramouche. Scaramouche appears in a nonphysical form, taunting Aether, who is both shocked and immediately on guard. Since Paimon cannot see Scaramouche, the conversation is between him and Aether alone.
- I know you must be curious. I might as well tell you that I decided to enter Haypasia's consciousness the moment I sensed your touch.
- —Scaramouche to Aether
Scaramouche remarks how much he missed the look of abject horror on his face whenever they meet, adding that he can hear all his thoughts. He reveals that he sensed Aether's touch and decided to enter Haypasia's consciousness at that moment. When Aether asks why, Scaramouche responds, "To observe her on a fool's errand." He then tells Aether that even if he manages to rescue Nahida, he won't be able to defeat him. Aether is taken aback, realizing that the creation of a new god is happening much quicker than he anticipated.
Aether then asks Scaramouche why he's acting friendlier than usual, to which he replies that it's because he's in a good mood. Despite being enemies, Aether unexpectedly shows concern; he questions whether Scaramouche is truly okay with everything, pointing out how risky his plan is. He warns him that even if he manages to fully become a god, he might not remain the same and asks if he would still want to become a god if it meant losing himself. Scaramouche, in response, remarks that his words almost make him seem like a friend who actually cares, but he corrects him, saying he’s wrong because he was born to be a god.
He dismisses his past memories and feelings as senseless drivel that should have been erased long ago. At this moment, Scaramouche suddenly appears startlingly close to him, invading his personal space, which catches him off guard with his sudden closeness. Despite his surprise, Aether holds his ground, meeting his gaze without flinching. His serious expression also changes when they are so close to each other—his gaze softens.
Scaramouche then challenges Aether, asking what the world has ever done for him to make him so determined to protect it. With unwavering conviction, Aether responds simply, “You wouldn’t understand.” Scaramouche advises him to let go of his misguided sense of duty, claiming that he doesn’t know the truth. He argues that humans can only find true bliss in ignorance, suggesting it would be better for him and others to embrace it. Scaramouche expresses to Aether how Haypasia is useful as his first follower and that eventually, he will reach the throne of divinity. Aether responds with doubt, which Scaramouche notices but then brushes off, saying he will eventually understand what kind of authority he is challenging.
Aether attempts to cause conflict by telling Scaramouche that Dottore is trying to harm his first follower. To this, Scaramouche tells him he is not good at sowing discord and that a few words won't convince him to destroy Dottore.
Scaramouche tells Aether that he is willing to give him a gift, claiming that he should feel honored to be able to speak to him in this manner and that he will be rewarded. He adds that both good and bad things can be considered gifts and that gods have never needed to be reasonable. With those words, he disappears, using the power of the Gnosis to change the weather, summoning a thunderstorm.
Where the Boat of Consciousness Lies[]
In Archon Quest Chapter III: Act V - Akasha Pulses, the Kalpa Flame Rises, Aether confronts Scaramouche in his Shouki no Kami form. When he spews cruel words at Paimon for interrupting his conversation with Nahida, Aether remarks that he is still the same Balladeer they once knew. Scaramouche, unamused, proposes a fight, to which Aether boldly steps up. He engages in battle against his divine form, attempting to remove the Electro Gnosis from him. However, he is overpowered, pushed back, and slammed into the ground by Scaramouche.
Seizing the opportunity, Scaramouche picks up Nahida and attempts to take her Dendro Gnosis. However, Nahida reveals that they are actually in the 168th samsara cycle. Using her powers, she and Aether have been infiltrating Scaramouche's consciousness repeatedly, battling him over and over in an effort to find a strategy to defeat him. Despite Aether losing all 168 battles, Nahida carefully registers each attempt and shares the results with the people of Sumeru to refine their approach.
Finally, the showdown takes place in reality. Armed with the wisdom he has gained from every defeat and supported by the people of Sumeru, Aether skillfully evades Scaramouche's attacks, fueling his growing frustration.
In the end, Aether manages to defeat him. Nahida confiscates the Electro Gnosis, and Scaramouche collapses out of his Shouki no Kami form, crashing to the ground.
A Toast to Victory[]
Aether visits Nahida at the Sanctuary and asks about the Balladeer, showing that he does have some level of curiosity or concern about his fate. Nahida explains that despite his past as a self-proclaimed god, he retains valuable traits. She also notes that he still holds mysteries even he hasn't unraveled. His future remains uncertain and depends on luck, as he is currently in a coma, hidden away for safety. This interaction suggests that Aether has at least some level of concern or curiosity about Scaramouche, countering the idea that he is completely indifferent toward him.
Interlude Chapter: Inversion of Genesis[]
The Night-Bird Falls at the Curtain's Call[]
In Archon Quest Interlude Chapter: Act III - Inversion of Genesis, Aether comes across two people who are talking about the events of Tatarasuna 400 years ago, and they mention a mysterious kabukimono who was apparently not a human but a puppet. Aether realizes this must have been Scaramouche. When talking with Paimon, they see Scaramouche, who is supposed to be locked up, walking through the streets of Sumeru. In response to this, they visit Nahida and see him there. Nahida explains that Scaramouche is doing some investigation for her. He asks Aether if killing him is the only thing he can think about, though Paimon interrupts him, saying that Nahida said he still had some mysteries left, and Scaramouche responds by asking Aether if he would have finished the job and killed him if it was up to him, giving him the chance to kill him after they finished the job, and notes that if so, then he was wrong to think that he might have cold feet. However, Aether doesn't have a response to this.
When Aether learns Scaramouche is no longer a Harbinger following his recent losses, he bluntly remarks how Dottore tossed him out like trash. Scaramouche talks about how most human relationships are transactional, and how as long as one has value, they will not be abandoned. He then admits that after the recent events, he is not quite what he used to be, to which Aether decides not to show sympathy, sardonically saying what a crying shame it is.
- Per my agreement with Lesser Lord Kusanali, I’ll be at the front. It’s my job to lead the way and get rid of any obstacles in our path. All you have to do is keep your pretty eyes open and try not to fall behind.
- —Scaramouche to Aether

Scaramouche referring to Aether's eyes as "pretty".
Nahida proposes that Scaramouche join forces with them and decides to do a test run in order to see how well they all manage to cooperate. Aether sees him as untrustworthy but ends up agreeing to accompany him inside Irminsul. After being transported to Irminsul, Scaramouche snarkily comments on how quickly Aether has caught up with him, and Aether in response tells him that he's here to babysit him upon Nahida's request. He says how he understands that prisoners get harassed by guards, but he's on temporary release, and thus they should back off a little. They propose a truce while they are in Irminsul to work together. Scaramouche says that he'll be in the front and that Aether should keep his "pretty eyes" open and try not to fall behind. At the snarky remarks, Aether tells him to stop and to focus on his job.
Scaramouche takes the lead inside Irminsul, warning Aether and Paimon to stay close and not wander off. Paimon, ever curious, asks what would happen if they did. In response, Scaramouche simply smirks, making Paimon annoyed. He then shifts his gaze to Aether, remarking that he was picturing his expression if Paimon got lost. Acknowledging the unpredictability of their surroundings, he advises them to stick close to him for safety. During this process, Aether notes how Scaramouche does not put up resistance, acting quite obediently, and is good at working on the front line. He wonders if this is the type of role he had in the Fatui and thinks about how he is a strange individual.
When Scaramouche connects to the center of Irminsul, Aether has a telepathic conversation with Nahida and Paimon, excluding Scaramouche. He realizes this and is upset, saying how it must be a riveting conversation they are having, and that the best ones always happen when he is not involved. He also realizes that he is the subject of said conversation. Aether in response tells him that they have every right to keep certain things confidential. Scaramouche agrees, saying how they can't have their prisoner knowing too much.
As Scaramouche connects to the center of Irminsul, Aether holds a telepathic conversation with Nahida and Paimon, deliberately excluding him. But he’s not oblivious—he picks up on it immediately. "Must be a riveting conversation you three are having," he remarks. "The good ones always happen when I’m not involved." There’s a bitterness in his words, a quiet frustration at being kept on the outside. And when he realizes he’s the subject of the discussion, his annoyance only deepens. Aether meets his irritation with a cold but logical response. "We have every right to keep certain things confidential." Scaramouche doesn’t argue, though his agreement comes wrapped in sarcasm. "Of course. We can’t have the prisoner knowing too much." A sharp remark, but one that acknowledges the reality of his situation. He may be working with them for now, but he’s still not truly one of them.

Scaramouche casually mentions that Aether and Lumine came from another world, a fact known to very few. Paimon is immediately suspicious, but he calmly replies that they've met before and that Aether is well-known, so it’s only natural he’d know some things about him. There’s no sarcasm, just certainty. Aether watches him carefully but doesn’t push further. When he notes his unexpectedly mild attitude, Scaramouche simply says he wants to avoid trouble and can manage being civil for now.
As Scaramouche uncovers the truth from Irminsul, the weight of it settles heavily on him. Niwa, the friend he had believed had betrayed him, had been loyal to the very end. It was Dottore who had orchestrated the deception, twisting the truth into something cruel and unforgivable. Aether doesn’t press him. He gives him space, watching as he processes emotions too tangled to put into words. Grief, anger, regret—it’s all there, flickering behind his eyes. Listening to Nahida, Aether pieces together what this meant for him. His pursuit of vengeance against the Raiden Gokaden had been built on a lie, fueled by the pain of a betrayal that had never actually happened. He understands now—being betrayed by someone close must have filled him with resentment, driving him down the path he took. Along with this, however, he also remarks how this does not mean vengeance was the correct answer.
Later, when Aether checks on Scaramouche, he stands with his arms crossed, a dangerous glint in his eyes and a smirk on his lips. He catches Aether watching and, in a tone that carries a hint of hope, asks, "Are you worried about me?" There’s something in his voice—like he wants him to care, even if he won’t admit it. The Japanese version also shows his emotions and tone very clearly. Then, after a pause, he muses, "If we didn’t have such history, I’d almost think that qualifies me to be your friend." But Aether doesn’t respond to that. Instead, he keeps his focus on what’s important. "We just want to make sure this doesn’t affect the plan," he says. The moment shifts—whatever fleeting sincerity was there vanishes. His expression hardens, his voice sharp with irritation. "It won’t. I’ll keep my end of the deal." Even now, even at his lowest, he refuses to let himself be seen as vulnerable.
Scaramouche notices Aether’s upset expression and, seeing an opportunity, tells him he might have some information that could interest him. He says that since Irminsul didn’t provide any answers, he now has something new to share. Scaramouche reveals that his twin sister, Lumine, might have ties to Khaenri’ah and that she arrived in this world because of a summoning. He also mentions that the Jester, a royal mage from Khaenri’ah, once lived with Lumine and shared this information. Scaramouche leaves it to Aether whether he believes him or not, but assures him he’s not lying. This is information Aether has been desperately searching for, but despite all his efforts, even the Archons have been tight-lipped about his sister. Only Nahida, the Dendro Archon, has given him a few pieces of information. So, for Scaramouche—his enemy—to be the one to offer him even a small fragment of information about Lumine, it’s a big deal. It may not be much yet, but it’s more than he’s gotten from anyone else.
After confirming the mission's completion, Scaramouche deviates from the original plan, taking a moment for himself. He forms a shield around himself, Aether, and Paimon before proposing an exchange: his answer to a question in return for a secret of his own. By taking his hand (This moment stands out, especially because they’ve communicated telepathically before without needing hand-holding), he establishes a telepathic connection. In the English translation, Aether accuses him of "attempting to brainwash him." However, in the original Chinese version, he says:(你想入侵我的意识?)("You want to invade my consciousness?"). Scaramouche denies this, explaining that his ability only allows for communication, nothing more.
Through this connection, Scaramouche asks if it is possible to change the past in their world. Though Aether doesn't respond verbally, his shock and hesitation reveal the truth he sought. Scaramouche smiles as he lets go of Aether’s hand. In the English version, Paimon, who had been watching in confusion, interjects: "Huh? What the... What happened? Paimon only saw you holding hands for a second..." In the original Chinese version, Paimon says: (咦?什…什么了?就看到你们突然拉了一下手…)("Huh? Wh... What happened? I just saw you two suddenly hold hands..."). Scaramouche, in response, tells Paimon that he was simply thanking him. But Aether realizes too late—his hesitation confirmed something important to Scaramouche. As he turns to leave, Paimon protests, and Aether immediately gives chase, calling out to stop him. Scaramouche acknowledges his quick reaction but insists they won’t meet again. With a final look at Aether, he erases his existence from Irminsul, believing those who perished in Tatarasuna because of him deserve another chance at life.
The Kabukimono's Finale[]
After Scaramouche’s drastic actions take effect, the world forgets his existence entirely—everyone except Aether, who still remembers everything. As he travels around Inazuma, he learns the tragic truth: despite his attempt to erase himself to save those who were unjustly killed, his actions were in vain. The people he tried to save still died, though under different circumstances. Seeking answers, Aether visits Nahida and accidentally mentions investigating “The Balladeer.” Confused, Nahida remarks that it sounds like a code name, as she has no memory of him. Troubled by this realization, Aether grows visibly distressed. Nahida notices his expression and gently asks if there’s something he wants to share.

Paimon asking Aether why "he looks so upset"
Lost in thought, Aether wonders what might have happened to Scaramouche after he erased all traces of his existence from Irminsul. Seeing him upset, Paimon asks what’s wrong and why he looks so upset. Aether replies to Paimon, saying that some things have happened that only he can remember. After a brief moment of hesitation, he makes the decision to reveal the truth about Scaramouche. With a heavy heart, he begins to explain, his words piecing together the fragments of a story shattered and scattered across time—one of pain, sacrifice, and a futile attempt to rewrite the past. As he recounts what he knows, his voice carries the weight of someone who has witnessed a tragedy no one else can recall.
Nahida can only make inferences about Scaramouche's character, but she acknowledges that Aether is the only one who truly remembers him. Aether, however, is uncertain. He recalls their past as enemies and wonders about his motivations—whether he wanted to reset everything, save someone, or erase himself completely. He remembers a question Scaramouche asked him, a question that made him hesitate. His hesitation, rooted in witnessing Greater Lord Rukkhadevata's own self-erasure, gave Scaramouche his answer, though he can't reveal this to Nahida. When Nahida notices Aether's worry, he responds depending on the dialogue options you choose:
- “I just feel... empty.”
- — First Dialogue Option
- “He chose such a radical option, and yet...”
- — Second Dialogue Option
The weight of everything Aether has learned leaves him with a heavy heart. He returns to the Sanctuary of Surasthana to share his findings with Nahida, who is reminded of a secret she had intentionally kept hidden before The Balladeer entered Irminsul. As they piece the puzzle together, they realize that despite his attempt to erase himself, his existence was never truly gone. The memories of everything he had done begin to resurface. If Aether chooses to speak with Nahida again, she will reveal additional insight into the situation. However, the Archon senses Aether’s emotions and gently advises, "There's a few things I'd like to look into. You should go take a walk and try to unwind." Though Aether doesn’t say it outright, he cares about Scaramouche and his entire story—his past, his suffering, and what has become of him. The more he thinks about it, the stronger his unease grows.[1]
Taking Nahida’s advice, he heads to the Grand Bazaar to clear his mind. As he reflects, he recalls Greater Lord Rukkhadevata’s words: No one can fully erase themselves from existence—not even her. A nagging feeling tells him that he’s forgetting something crucial. Just as he begins to piece it together, a familiar voice pulls him from his thoughts. His eyes widen in disbelief. Standing at a fruit stall is Scaramouche—but something about him is different. His clothing has changed, his demeanor is no longer sharp-tongued or prideful, and he seems… gentler. Nearby, a merchant scolds a worker for being distracted. Aether watches in shock as Wanderer—formerly The Balladeer—apologizes with a humble and polite tone. The merchant also complains about someone stealing his last two fresh Sunsettias, and Wanderer immediately offers to fetch more. Paimon is stunned when Aether identifies him, exclaiming, “He's WHO???” The merchant finds Wanderer’s behavior unusual—he refuses wages, never takes breaks, and spends his free time simply wandering the city. When asked about it, Wanderer casually admits, “That’s right. I am a drifter.” Before anyone can say more, he heads off to collect more Sunsettias. Unable to suppress his curiosity, Aether decides to follow him.
They trail Wanderer as he leaves Sumeru City and heads into the wilderness. Once he gathers enough fruit, he pauses, seemingly lost in thought as he considers washing them before returning. Watching him from afar, Aether realizes: “…If I weren’t seeing this with my own eyes, I would never believe it.” However, the Wanderer notices his presence. Turning to face him, he asks why he’s been following him from the city. In the English version, he asks if they have met before, but in the Japanese and Chinese versions, he remarks that his eyes seem familiar—echoing an earlier moment when he had called them "pretty." Despite losing his memories, he instinctively recognized something about him, and it's his golden eyes, proving his words were not sarcasm at that time.[2] Aether calmly replies that he knows who Wanderer is, even if Wanderer doesn’t remember him. To prove his claim, he reveals a secret only Wanderer would know—that he is a puppet. Paimon becomes curious and asks Aether what made him think that Wanderer is a puppet. However, when she notices Wanderer's expression, she realizes that Aether is actually right. Wanderer, speaking in a gentle tone, acknowledges that Aether must truly know him, as he doesn’t share that information with many people.
Aether then tells Wanderer that there’s somewhere he wants to take him. Surprisingly, Wanderer immediately agrees despite not having any memories of him at the time. However, he adds, "Okay, but let me deliver these goods to my boss first." Paimon asks Wanderer if he really doesn’t need Mora for his help, and he explains that he’s repaying a favor to someone who sheltered him during a storm. Paimon finds this surprisingly kind of him. Wanderer then tells Aether he’ll come with him after returning the goods, to which Aether hesitantly agrees: "...Alright," still unaccustomed to his kindness due to their past as enemies.
Returning to the city, Wanderer returns the goods to the merchant, who notices Aether and Paimon and questions their presence. Wanderer explains that they need his help, so he’ll be leaving for a while. The merchant sighs, saying he was about to pay Wanderer anyway and dismisses him, acknowledging that Wanderer only helped out as gratitude for being given shelter from the rain. However, he finds it strange that Wanderer had been wandering aimlessly in a storm without urgency. Wanderer hesitates but ultimately agrees, realizing the merchant is right. He thanks the merchant for bringing him to the city, and the merchant wishes him well, hoping he finds his path. After one last expression of gratitude, Wanderer turns to Aether and says, "Alright, done. Thanks for waiting for me. We can go now."
At the Sanctuary of Surasthana, Nahida asks him why he refers to himself as “Wanderer.” He explains that the name feels fitting, like a plant without roots—something that resonates with him deeply. When the Wanderer inquires about what he was like in his “past incarnation,” as Nahida calls it, there’s an awkward silence. The group struggles to answer, which leads him to suspect that his previous self was not a good person. Despite this, he insists on hearing the truth, stating that truth is important to him.
As their interactions continue, Aether remains quiet and observant. He listens intently to the Wanderer as he grapples with his past, fully aware of the weight his memories carry. When he questions why Aether is helping him if they were enemies before, Aether has no response to this, showing that he truly cares about him and wants to help him regain his memories back. As they delve into his physical memories, the Wanderer expresses guilt over dragging him into the process but remains resolute in facing his past.
- Wanderer (with no memories) – “If we were enemies, why are you trying to help me find the truth?”
- Aether – “...”

Aether showing sympathy towards Wanderer
In their interactions within Wanderer's physical memories, Aether’s demeanor softens. He may not speak much, but his growing sympathy for him is evident. He understands the weight of confronting one’s past, and he doesn't hold his previous actions against him. His willingness to stand by him, even when he is at his most vulnerable, speaks volumes about his character and his ability to see beyond the surface to the person struggling beneath.

Before Wanderer claims his memories back, he expresses that he has always felt empty and without purpose because his creator abandoned him. He has spent his life aimlessly wandering, feeling incomplete. However, after meeting Aether, he comes to the realization that reclaiming his lost "sins" (his past memories and emotions) is the key to truly understanding himself and becoming whole. In essence, meeting him helped him recognize the path to his true identity.
- Haha, you sound like you're concerned about me
- —Wanderer to Aether after getting his memories back

When he eventually reclaims all of his memories, the manifestation of Shouki no Kami reappears, embodying the burdens of his previous self. Overwhelmed and struggling to comprehend the truth of his past, the Wanderer nearly falters. However, when Shouki no Kami attacks, Aether steps forward to defend him, blocking the blow. Moments later, as another strike heads for Aether, the Wanderer instinctively shields him, taking the hit himself. This act of selflessness grants him an Anemo Vision, and with its power, he defeats the Shouki no Kami—destroying the very embodiment of the god he once sought to become.
After the battle, the Wanderer reflects on his journey. Depending on the dialogue options you choose, Wanderer's response remains the same:
- Aether – “Now you've recovered your memories...”
- Wanderer – “Haha, you sound like you're concerned about me"
- “But don't worry. Thanks to you, even if I didn't change a thing.... at least I now know the truth."”
- Aether – “The past will catch up with you.”
- Wanderer – “Haha, you sound like you're concerned about me"
- “But don't worry. Thanks to you, even if I didn't change a thing.... at least I now know the truth."”
In that moment, it’s clear that while the Wanderer has come a long way in confronting his past, Aether’s influence on him has left a lasting imprint—one that could shift his path forward.
As Though Morning Dew[]
Back in the Sanctuary of Surasthana, the Wanderer shares his perspective, noting that his worth comes from his utility to others. Aether, however, counters by saying Nahida doesn’t see him that way. He then comments on Aether’s character, calling him a “good person” devoted to justice, though he admits his views differ from his. Curious about his motivations, he asks why he traveled to Inazuma after he wiped himself from Irminsul. Aether explains it was to see what he had changed. Grateful for his efforts, he declares himself in his debt and vows to repay him, even though Aether insists he didn’t do it for a reward. The Wanderer, however, remains firm in his belief that all relationships are built on equal exchanges, promising to “balance the books” someday.
Before parting ways, Aether gently encourages the Wanderer to allow Nahida to guide him toward a new path, sharing his hope that he will grow beyond his past. The Wanderer, now more open than ever to change, agrees to listen to Nahida’s wisdom and pledges to support her efforts from the shadows. As they stand at the crossroads of their journey, he ponders something—his name. Having never been given a true name by Raiden Ei, his creator, the Wanderer finds himself at a loss. Raiden Ei had given him a golden feather instead, a symbol of their connection, but no name to call his own. He turns to Aether, asking him to bestow one upon him, allowing him the honor of naming him.
When naming Wanderer, he only gives positive feedback if the player attempts to name him the same as the Traveler. However, even if the player did not try to name him the same as his Traveler's in-game name, he will not refuse any name that the player gave him, with the exception of the name of another playable character such as Mona, Ei, Kazuha, and more:
- “You want to share your name with me? Huh, not a bad choice.”
- — if the player attempts to name him the same as the Traveler
- “Are you sure?”
- — His response if the player doesn't attempt to name the Wanderer the same as the Traveler
As he prepares to leave, the Wanderer makes one final request: that Aether share the truth with any remaining Raiden Gokaden descendants. He believes they deserve to know what happened, even if it means they might seek revenge against him. Depending on the answers, one of these two conversations can be seen:
- Wanderer – “It's fine. Let them stab their blades into my chest if they so desire. ...Maybe that's how it always should have been.”
- Aether – “...”
- Wanderer – “What's that look for? Don't make that face, I know what I'm doing.”
- Wanderer – “It's fine. Let them stab their blades into my chest if they so desire. ...Maybe that's how it always should have been.”
- Aether – “Fine.”
- Wanderer – “Hehe, no nonsense. I like it.”
— Whatever you choose for both dialogues, his tone of voice remains soft toward Aether in response.
A Parade of Providence[]
Act I - Comings and Goings[]
Opening Festivities[]

Wanderer revealed to be representing Vahumana as “Hat Guy”.
In the limited-time event A Parade of Providence, Wanderer participates as “Hat Guy,” representing the Vahumana Darshan in the Akademiya Extravaganza and Interdarshan Championship. Aether, surprised to see him involved in such an event, questions his participation, noting that it seems out of character for him.
Aether and Paimon interview the contestants to find out how they joined the event. They learn that there are two ways to participate: through self-nomination, like Cyno, Faruzan, and Kaveh, or through a large number of recommendations, like Tighnari and Layla. Each contestant has their own reason for entering the Championship. Tighnari joined to promote his ecology lecture, Cyno was motivated by the limited-edition Genius Invokation TCG card in the prize pool, Faruzan wanted more students and funding for her research, and Kaveh needed the prize money to buy a new house and move out of Alhaitham's residence.
Aether and Paimon approach Wanderer, who introduces himself as "Hat Guy" from Vahumana. Paimon is immediately confused and questions why he goes by such a name, to which Wanderer casually responds that it’s simply what he uses in Vahumana. When Paimon points out that it sounds more like a nickname than a real name, Wanderer sarcastically dismisses her concern. Shifting focus, Paimon demands to know why he is participating in the Interdarshan Championship, reminding him that they are "specially invited guest commentators" and urging him to answer. Wanderer, smirking, responds that even if they were Matra, it wouldn't matter—he has no obligation to answer. However, he does admit that he has an agreement with someone not to reveal his true motives, making Paimon suspicious. When she accuses him of plotting something in secret, he playfully challenges her to guess, further frustrating her. Since he refuses to explain his involvement in the Championship, Paimon instead asks why he joined Vahumana. Wanderer, clearly annoyed by their persistence, sarcastically remarks on their tendency to pry before finally providing an answer. He explains that he wrote essays refuting a Vahumana researcher's claims about the Tatarasuna incident. Later, he wrote commentaries on Inazuman societal issues, which mistakenly led Vahumana to believe he was one of them, even inviting him to a lecture. Calling the entire situation the "wishful thinking of idiots," he clarifies that he never intended to be part of the Darshan.
However, he then reveals that when Lesser Lord Kusanali learned of this, she personally intervened and officially registered him in Vahumana under the name "Hat Guy." Aether, realizing Nahida's involvement, acknowledges it without surprise. Wanderer then abruptly ends the conversation, advising them to focus on the other contestants instead. Before leaving, he cryptically remarks that someone is about to have terrible luck and challenges them to guess who. Paimon, growing increasingly frustrated, exclaims that it’s impossible to relax with him around. Aether, however, remains calm and simply nods in agreement with Paimon’s comment, showing that while Paimon is clearly irritated, Aether appears more understanding of Wanderer’s personality.
While Aether and Paimon speak with Layla about her concerns, Wanderer suddenly joins the conversation, questioning why she doesn’t use astrology to solve her problem. When Layla explains her belief that constantly relying on astrology could lead to losing the "blessing from the stars," Wanderer dismisses it as overthinking and claims she simply lacks the resolve to win. After he leaves, Aether doesn’t scold Wanderer here. When Layla worriedly asks if she said something wrong, Aether reassures her, stating that it was just a difference in perspectives and encouraging her to follow her own convictions.
Aether and Paimon find Wanderer sitting outside Puspa Café, casually having coffee despite being a contestant in the championship. When questioned, he dismisses the early stages of the competition as mere spectacle, stating that he'll only participate when things become serious.
Act II - Beginnings and Endings[]
Competition on the Sands[]

Wanderer handing over to Aether a container of water.
While searching for Tighnari in the desert, the group finds him fainted from the heat. As Paimon expresses concern, Wanderer unexpectedly appears behind them and cynically remarks on the fragility of humans, criticizing their inability to endure extreme conditions. Aether, unimpressed, challenges his words. Instead of directly offering water to Tighnari, Wanderer hands the container to Aether, subtly acknowledging that he is the one who will take action.
Act III - Gatherings and Partings[]
The Arc of Intellect[]
Aether, Paimon, and Nahida discuss Sachin's research and its implications. Nahida reveals that she enlisted Wanderer—whom she calls "Hat Guy"—to monitor the Akademiya’s championship. Despite the player's ability to rename Wanderer in-game, Nahida and other characters continue to refer to him as "Hat Guy." Wanderer expresses frustration over the nickname but still accepts it. The conversation also touches on wisdom, truth, and Wanderer’s reluctant involvement in Vahumana.
Summertide Scales and Tales[]
Page III - Until the End of The World[]
- Morning, sunshine. You were having a nice little dream there, weren't you? Not gonna lie, it was kind of adorable.
- — Wanderer to Aether when he finally woke up
During the limited-time event story "Summertide Scales and Tales: Page III", Aether and the others fall from the Maritime Express, but Wanderer manages to catch them mid-fall. He gently places Aether onto Nilou’s lap. As Aether lies unconscious, Wanderer comments on his fragility, remarking that he must be delicate to pass out from such a minor fall. When Aether wakes up, Wanderer greets him with a playful, “Morning, sunshine,” before teasing him about having a nice little dream, adding that it was even somewhat adorable. Aether, however, doesn’t seem to respond to his teasing, instead asking what happened. Wanderer explains that they had fallen down a waterfall, and Aether had passed out during the fall. He then makes a sarcastic remark, saying, “Someone couldn’t keep it together,” referring to Aether. As though enlightening him on something obvious, he proceeds to tell him that crashing into the ground doesn't transport you to another world, sarcastically mentioning that such things only happen in “stupid Inazuman light novels.” His words carry a playful mockery, though it’s clear he’s still more focused on teasing than offering any real concern.
When Aether explains to the others that he heard a voice in his head while unconscious, Wanderer quickly steps in to offer an explanation. He casually informs them that the fog in the area had a hallucinatory effect, suggesting that Aether might have inhaled some of it while panicking on his way down.

Wanderer looking at Aether's direction, ignoring Nilou and Navia.
As Aether and Paimon stand together, Navia turns to Nilou and asks if she knows a certain "Hat Guy." However, Wanderer appears to be looking at Aether’s direction with an unusually soft expression and doesn’t seem to be paying attention to Navia and Nilou’s conversation. Nilou responds, explaining that Wanderer is a student at the Akademiya and that they met during the last Interdarshan Championship, where he represented Vahumana. Navia, now turning to Wanderer, introduces herself as the President of Spina di Rosula and greets him warmly. She asks if she should call him "Hat Guy," since that seems to be what everyone else is calling him. Wanderer finally looks at her and casually replies, "Sure, whatever," before turning away again, his attention turns to Aether again. When Navia inquires about the sword at his hip, Wanderer explains that he has had it ever since he woke up in Simulanka. Despite his attempts to get rid of it, the sword always reappears. He then reveals its name—the "Hero’s Sword"—and explains that it is meant to be wielded by the Hero. With a trace of irony, he reflects on how, of all people, he was the one chosen as the hero. At this moment, Paimon speaks up, remarking that she and Aether always thought they were the heroes of the story, not Wanderer.
In response, Wanderer offers the title of hero to Aether, saying that he’d be doing him a favor by accepting it. However, Aether politely declines the offer, choosing not to take on the title:
- Wanderer – “Well, if it means that much to you, you're welcome to claim the title. You'd be doing me a favor.”
- Aether – “I'm good actually...”
- — Aether wanting Wanderer to take on the title.

Aether enjoying Paimon's irritation towards Wanderer.
When Wanderer briefly suggests gathering a dragon scale before they depart to slay the dragon, Paimon immediately begins bombarding him with a series of questions. In response, Wanderer asks if she’s ever considered keeping her questions to herself, pointing out that if he answers all of them, they’ll be there until the next Interdarshan Championship. Aether, finding the interaction amusing, smiles with his eyes closed, while Paimon, growing increasingly frustrated, becomes annoyed by his remark.
Later, Wheel finds them and excitedly approaches, exclaiming, “Brave hero!” When Aether looks at Wanderer with a smile, now fully aware that he’s the one being praised as the hero, Wanderer immediately reacts, gently asking, “What are you looking at me for? He’s obviously talking to you.” Wheel, however, clarifies that he wasn’t hurt because Wanderer had been the one to save him, further emphasizing the Wanderer's role as the hero in this situation.

Aether smiling at Wanderer.
While battling Simulanka's dragon, the ground beneath Aether and the others suddenly crumbles, causing them to fall. Once again, Wanderer swoops in to save them, though he expresses annoyance, asking how many more times he’ll have to save them. When Nilou thanks him for the rescue, Aether smiles and nods in agreement, silently acknowledging his efforts with a grateful look.
As Aether and the others prepare to approach the dragon once more, Wanderer’s tone shifts between concern and frustration. At one point, he exclaims sharply at Aether, warning him to be careful. His words carry a hint of annoyance as he adds, “If you fall, you’re on your own this time.” There’s a subtle edge to his voice, as if he’s already tired of having to constantly watch over him, yet his words still carry an undertone of caution. Later, as the battle intensifies and the dragon grows more aggressive, Wanderer’s tone softens slightly, though still laced with urgency. He warns Aether that the dragon is getting serious and advises him firmly, “He's getting serious... Don’t get hit!” His words, while still blunt, carry a sense of protective concern beneath the sharpness—he wants him to stay safe, even if his way of showing it is through a more detached and straightforward approach. It's clear that, despite his frustration, he doesn’t want anything bad to happen to him.
After learning the dragon’s story and that its name is Durin, Wanderer finds sympathy for him, as the journey of Durin mirrors his own in many ways. He flies up to Durin, resting his hand on the dragon's face in a rare moment of empathy, as Aether and the others watch. When the platform beneath the dragon breaks, Wanderer leaps into action, flying down to save Durin. Aether rushes toward him, possibly intending to help, but the platform he's standing on also collapses. Just in time, Kirara swoops in to rescue Aether. Afterward, Aether hurriedly runs back to the edge, anxiously peering down to where Wanderer fell after Durin. His expression is filled with worry and uncertainty.

Aether's reaction towards Wanderer's words.
Later, along with the others, Wanderer offers Durin his blessing, expressing his hope that Durin finds acceptance in Simulanka. He adds that, as someone who wishes to be his friend, he sincerely hopes for the best for Durin’s future. Aether, who hears this, softens his gaze and smiles slightly, seeming taken aback by Wanderer’s unexpected sentiment. He then steps forward to offer Durin his own blessing.
After Durin is transformed into a new, smaller form, he turns to Wanderer and asks if he will come along with him. Wanderer, perplexed, questions why he would do such a thing. Durin responds by reminding him of his earlier words—that he wanted to be friends. Aether casts a disapproving look at Wanderer, noticing his sudden shift in attitude. Wanderer, seemingly annoyed with himself, admits that maybe he spoke too soon. Hearing this, Durin grows visibly sad, which causes Aether to react, but instead of calling him by the name he originally created for him, he says, "Come on, Hat Guy..." This shows that when others are around, he keeps the name he gave Wanderer to himself, much like how his twin sister is the only person who calls him by his real name, "Aether," instead of "Traveler."
Aether’s subtle but meaningful influence changes Wanderer’s mind. When he gives him a ‘disapproving look,’ Wanderer finally gives in and agrees to Durin’s proposal, accepting the offer to accompany him. In this moment, when Durin says, “Thank you! You're the first friend to call me by my name,” Wanderer’s gaze shifts toward Aether, hinting that while the others may call him “Hat Guy” or other impersonal names, Aether is the only one who calls him by the name he gave him. As Wanderer turns away, his words are tinged with a hint of frustration and exhaustion, yet his tone is soft: “Let’s go back up. I’m about to suffocate down here.” Aether, visibly happy with this, lightly scolds Paimon for being insensitive about the situation, defending the sentiment behind Wanderer’s words.
Appendix - Afterword[]
In "Summertide Scales and Tales: Afterword", Aether, Paimon, and Wanderer, along with Mini Durin, encounter Fischl, who gives them a characteristically grand introduction. She refers to Aether as the “Outlander” and calls Wanderer a “hat-wearing servant,” which annoys him. Mini Durin quickly corrects her, asserting that Wanderer is his friend, not his servant.
Soon after, Klee and Albedo arrive. Klee excitedly shares her experiences, and she and Mini Durin realize their mothers were friends, making them like siblings. Overjoyed by this newfound connection, Klee and Mini Durin run off to play with Fischl.
Meanwhile, Albedo takes a more serious tone with Wanderer. He reveals a prophecy about Dragonspine's Durin potentially returning to life, a situation that could have grave consequences. Given Wanderer’s bond with Mini Durin, Albedo suggests that their fates are now intertwined and asks for his help if the prophecy comes to pass. Though reluctant, Wanderer does not outright refuse.
With the looming return of the real Durin, it is likely that Aether and Wanderer will meet again in Dragonspine, where they may have to confront the prophecy together.
While the others admire a small origami ship, Aether gently probes Wanderer about his thoughts on Durin’s fate. Wanderer, though dismissive, seems to care more than he admits, subtly hinting at his developing sympathy due to saving Mini Durin. Aether understands that Wanderer needs time to process and quietly supports him.
As they discuss the boat’s name, Wanderer proposes “The Durin” as a gesture of hope for Mini Durin’s safe journey. Mini Durin, moved, asks Wanderer if he can visit Teyvat, promising to stay close. Though reluctant, Wanderer agrees. The others bid Mini Durin farewell, with promises of reunions. Aether quietly wishes both Mini Durin and Wanderer to take care, as Wanderer prepares to accompany him on his journey.
Chromatic Ode of Candies and Roses[]
First Gift — Give Her Surprises[]
In Chromatic Ode of Candies and Roses: "First Gift — Give Her Surprises", as the Sabzeruz Festival approaches, the people of Sumeru prepare for the grand celebration and secretly plan a birthday surprise for their beloved Archon, Nahida. After the festival’s main events, Aether finds himself outside the Akademiya, where he encounters Wanderer.
He is surprised to see him—after all, it’s rare for anyone to leave the celebrations just to seek him out. When he asks if Wanderer plans to join in, Wanderer dismisses the idea, saying he’s not the type of person who wants to “hold hands and dance with everyone.” Instead, he encourages Aether to go enjoy himself but requests that he keep his presence a secret. He explains that he prefers to experience the festival in his own solitary way, away from the crowds and noise.
However, his words are not entirely truthful—he has danced (proven from the artifact sets) and held hands before (with Aether). The key lies in his choice of words: "everyone".
By making that distinction, he reveals a quiet truth—while he distances himself from others, he is someone who dances, as he was once a sword dancer during his time as Kabukimono. However, when it comes to holding hands, he has only ever allowed Aether to do so, having asked for his hand twice before. It’s not that he refuses such gestures entirely; rather, he reserves them only for him.
Third Gift — Give Her Sweetness[]
During the interaction between Cyno and Wanderer in Chromatic Ode of Candies and Roses: "Third Gift — Give Her Sweetness", Cyno asks if Wanderer plays Genius Invokation TCG. Wanderer immediately denies it, responding with a firm “No” and “I don’t play.” However, this is a lie—Wanderer has played TCG before, specifically with Aether. This means that while he refuses to acknowledge it to Cyno, he does make exceptions when it comes to Aether.
Wanderer’s Birthday[3][]
January 3, 2023[]

Wanderer's Birthday Art 2023
Wanderer gave Aether a Shimi Chazuke (his specialty dish) along with 3 Delicious Candied Ajilenakh Nut and 3 Delicious Baklava.
- “Not long ago, Lesser Lord Kusanali kept asking me to visit the Akademiya, to borrow books or attend lectures to immerse in the academic atmosphere. I was annoyed by this and wandered around the wilderness, but she still managed to find me. She said she understood that I don't like being around others, but it can be very painful being alone all the time. She also said at least I could see you if I bring you something on my birthday."
- “But why should I give someone a present when it's my birthday? How absurd."
- “I can see that she was looking for a chance to make my life more fulfilling, but has she ever stopped to think about what an "experience" it is for others to meet me?"
- “Anyway, I ran into some students by the road, and they dragged me into joining some cooking interest group. We ended up making a lot of food that is not to my taste, so I'm definitely not eating them. You can take the rest, eat it if you like it, throw it away if you don't. I have no interest in knowing what you do with it, you don't have to tell me.”
- “What a coincidence, it's been some time since we last met. Well then, have a nice day."
- “...You're not leaving? Don't tell me you came all this way to see me?"
- “To be honest, I don't really care for celebrating birthdays, and I don't have anything to give you in return for your well-wishes."
- “If you don't mind, perhaps... we could sit here together for a while.”
Teyvat Food Notes[4][]
After receiving Wanderer’s birthday mail, Aether hurries to meet him, knowing that while showing up early won’t earn praise, being late would definitely get him a scolding. Wanderer teases him for rushing, telling him to take his time. He humorously complains that, thanks to him, Lesser Lord Kusanali gave him the day off—but the price is spending it following Aether, and he can't decide whether it’s worse than attending his lessons. Aether brushes off his complaints, explaining that he has everything ready for today’s meal, having caught some eels in Inazuma recently, and invites him into his Serenitea Pot. Wanderer hesitates briefly, commenting on the simplicity of his place, but Aether reassures him that he’s welcome to share his thoughts, even if they’re critical. He settles on calling it "empty" in its beauty, and Aether takes it in stride.
As they prepare tea, Wanderer remarks on Aether’s skill, appreciating the bitterness and aroma of the brew. He critiques those who sweeten their tea too much, preferring it bitter to reveal its true flavor. Aether disagrees slightly, suggesting that both bitter and sweet teas have their time and place, which causes Wanderer to call him a "smooth talker." The conversation shifts as Wanderer shares a rare personal story about his past, recalling how, a long time ago, he drank tea for the first time with swordsmiths. At that point, he didn’t understand the social customs tied to it, and he laughs, realizing that others probably thought he genuinely enjoyed the bitter tea. It’s a rare, vulnerable moment for him, one Aether quietly listens to, noting how much he actually talks compared to his usual aloof self.
While cooking together, Aether watches how serious and focused Wanderer is in the kitchen. But when he introduces the concept of “ninja rice”—where ingredients are hidden beneath the rice to surprise the eater—Aether’s impression of him shifts. He had thought Wanderer was all business, but his playful side shines through, and he mentally takes back his earlier thought.
When the dish, Shimi Chazuke, is ready, Wanderer warns Aether that it’s bitter and not to everyone’s taste. As he tries it, he’s struck by the unexpected harmony of flavors—the slight bitterness of eel liver, the earthy rice soaked in bitter tea, and the delicate sweetness that emerges after each bite. The flavors come together in a surprising and satisfying way, leaving him in awe of Wanderer’s cooking skills. He wonders aloud how someone who doesn’t need to eat could have such talent in the kitchen. His surprise must show on his face, because Wanderer immediately becomes more gruff, telling him to stop staring and go wash the dishes. Despite his brusque exterior, there’s a softness in his actions earlier, hinting at how much he values Aether’s company.

Wanderer gave Aether a Shimi Chazuke (his specialty dish) along with 3 Padisarah and 3 Nilotpala Lotus.
- “Lately, there's always been a gaggle of students sneaking around and gossiping behind my back. One glare, and they'd scatter and hide."
- “And would you believe it? Just when I was hiding out in the wild, seeking some peace and quiet, they jumped out of some bushes holding a cake that anyone could see was sickeningly sweet. It's so incredibly ridiculous that I had to laugh. Just how many people on this planet would be happy about my "birth"?"
- “But their little joke did remind me that on this day, there is someone I need to give a gift to."
- “Since I'm the one picking the gift, I'll choose it based on my own preferences. If you've got any opinions, you'd best tell me in person."
- “Hmm... Though just how did they find me? Next time I'll need to find a more secluded spot.”
- “It's you again? Alright, come up quickly, but make sure no one sees you."
- “You weren't followed, were you? ...Hmph, I guess I'll have to trust you for now."
- “Well, what did you want to say? Just so you know, I don't want to hear it if it's "Happy Birthday" or something like that."
- “That goes for you fluffballs too, I'm watching y— Hey, stop moving around! I'll play with you later.”

Wanderer gave Aether a Shimi Chazuke (his specialty dish) along with Guide to Freedom.
- “It's become common knowledge that I'm never around on my birthday? I have no idea how that happened. I see no basis for it at all."
- “Just a week ago, I was passing through Treasures Street when this big-eared hat guy shoved a stack of cards into my hands, saying he had "high hopes" for me. That green-eyed desert guy backed him up too, somehow encouraging me to make friends through card games."
- “Ridiculous. As if you could form life-or-death bonds over a card table. Even Durin wouldn't buy that."
- “I imagine you won't agree with them either. Between playing card games with strangers and teaming up with you, I'd rather go with the latter."
- “By the way, I gave those cards to Durin. One day, you might stumble upon him in Mondstadt, sitting by the roadside playing cards. Don't act too surprised."
- “On another note, do you think "Big-Eared Hat" or "Hat Ears" works better as a nickname?”
- “I've told you there's no need for gifts, so what's with this handmade thing? The craftsmanship is... mediocre. Is this how you see me?"
- Whatever. I've already gotten plenty of unusual stuff from you, so what's one more? Hmm? Wait, even Durin prepared something?"
- ...Alright, fine. You guys sure come up with plenty of ideas. And look at you, grinning like that. I'm starting to think you're the ones who've been looking forward to this day.”

Fanon[]
The ship has been around since the Unreconciled Stars event back in patch 1.1, but has always been quite niche. It has experienced a sudden burst in popularity after the events of the Sumeru Archon Quests, and is considered to be a textbook Enemies-to-Lovers ship.
Another reason why the shippers are drawn to the pair is their differences in both design and personality. Aether is considered to be outgoing, kind, and friendly, and is often associated to sun imagery and light. Scaramouche, on the other hand, is aggressive, snarky, and pessimistic, and is associated to moon imagery and shadows. Furthermore, Aether sports a warm palette, using yellow, gold and brown, while Wanderer wears blue, teal, and white. Scaramouche's Harbinger design, on the other hand, is defined by the use of purple, black, and red, which creates a palette that is visually more similar to Aether's outfit.
After the Wanderer's teaser trailer dropped, many fans began to depict the two as the soldier (Scaramouche) and the ballerina (Aether) from the story.
It has reached 1,000+ works on AO3.

Trivia[]
- If the player attempts to name the Wanderer the same as the Traveler, he appears quite content to share a name.
- The symbols used to represent the pair are usually ☂️☀️, ☂️⛅, 🌀☀️ and 🌀⛅.
- Wanderer and Aether share the same Chinese Voice Actor.
- According to the original Chinese version, instead of Wanderer calling Aether "sunshine," he says that seeing Aether happy makes him happy as well. This is also the case in the Japanese version.
Illustration by Kana, Aether and Scaramouche's CN VA.
- Wanderer typically calls people by their real names only when he’s close to them—such as the Aether and Durin, both of whom he canonically considers friends. With Aether, he uses “Traveler” or the player-chosen name. Since the chosen name by the players is the one Aether uses in Teyvat, Wanderer is technically addressing him by his name, even if it isn’t his true one. That said, no one in Teyvat is supposed to know the Aether’s real name. This is confirmed when Aether says to his sister: “You’re the only one in this world who calls me that.” Considering Wanderer knows the Traveler is not from this world, it’s possible he knows their true name but chooses not to use it for reasons. In contrast, Wanderer avoids using real names for those he isn’t close to, instead opting for nicknames or titles. He refers to Nahida as “Lesser Lord Kusanali” out of respect. He calls Mona “Mage,” Sethos with nicknames like “Busy Bee” and “Green-Eyed Desert Guy,” and Cyno as “Big-Eared Hat Guy.” He also refers to Kazuha as “descendant of the Kaedehara Clan” rather than by name, likely because they never interacted in-canon.
- In the birthday voicelines, Wanderer took Aether's hand and led him to a vantage point to admire the scenery. Which is quite romantic.
- In the Official 3.3 Japanese Livestream. When Aether appeared surprised, Wanderer smiled then said "Right now i'm just a Wanderer, You can call me whatever you want"[5]
Wanderer giving the Sumeru Rose to Aether under the moonlight.
- A single flower can symbolize unity—representing togetherness and the concept of “one heart.” In Chinese culture, giving a single rose traditionally means "You’re my only love" and "Love at first sight."
- The rose has long been associated with love, passion, and deep affection. When you give someone a single rose, it symbolizes simplicity, purity, and undivided attention. It conveys the message, "You are the one," or "My feelings for you are sincere and singular."
- The Sumeru Rose, which is purple, have long been associated with mystery, enchantment, and the extraordinary, as purple flowers often represent these emotions in the language of flowers. With ties to admiration, devotion, and royalty, purple roses tell the one you love that they're the most important person in your life. These flowers are for committed, long-term relationships.
- On January 3, 2024. Wanderer sent Aether a letter telling him about a group of students in the Akademiya surprised him with a sweet cake. Enclosed with the letter are flowers picking by Wanderer according to his preferences. Gifting flowers symbolizes love, appreciation, and affection, making it a heartfelt way to show someone you care.
Wanderer gifting Aether 3 Padisarah and 3 Nilotpala Lotus
- The specific choice of three Padisarahs and three Nilotpala Lotuses carries deeper significance. In traditional flower symbolism, giving three flowers represents "I love you." When combined, the total of six flowers can symbolize "I want to be yours," reinforcing the message of devotion and longing.
- Additionally, both Padisarahs and Nilotpala Lotuses are rare and beautiful flowers in Sumeru.
- Official Genshin Festival 2024 on bilibili. To celebrate 2024 new year, Aether and Scaramouche were added at 1:31 when they were added as battle rivals. Also in that New Year's celebrate video. At the 1:35 mark when Aether threw some bombs at Scara, he accidentally blew up the academy's arena. [6]
- And in the moment 2 (2:12). Aether appears with messy hair while lying next to Scara's right side
- Wanderer and Kazuha next to Aether in Hoyofair countdown livestream art 2024.[7]
- Xiao and Scaramouche's English voice actors role-played a scene where both characters are arguing. During the exchange, Xiao suggested they discuss everything over tea at Wanshu Inn with Aether, which Scaramouche thought was a nice idea. [8]
Similarities, Differences and Parallels
- A synonym for the word "Wanderer" is "Traveler".
- Both Aether and Wanderer endure a sense of loss and disconnection from the world, which shapes their identities and paths.
- Aether was sealed away for 500 years, trapped in a deep slumber haunted by nightmares. He awoke to a world changed beyond recognition, stripped of everything familiar and left to wander in search of answers - Quotes from Traveler’s Character Story 1: "The god took your only kin away, and you were sealed and cast into a deep slumber filled with nightmares." "When you reawakened, the world was changed." "How long had you been asleep? You had no answers."
- Similarly, the Wanderer (formerly Scaramouche) experienced isolation and abandonment. He was left to reflect endlessly on his own existence, his memories locked away in his mind, which became a metaphorical prison - Quotes from Wanderer's Character Story 1: "Any recollection must begin several hundred years ago, when the puppet that shed tears upon being born would not be given a name, but was instead only given a small golden feather as proof of his personage." “He would be laid to rest within the Shakkei Pavilion, staring blankly at the beauteous scenery within. The flaming maple leaves, the exquisite window lattices... Within that lovely prison, he lost all perception."
- Both Wanderer and Aether were trapped in prolonged isolation.
- The passage of time caused both to lose their sense of perception — Wanderer lost touch with reality, and Aether lost his connection to the familiar world.
- Despite being surrounded by beauty (the maple leaves for Wanderer, the changed world for Aether), neither could find peace or comfort upon awakening.
- The Wanderer's constellation, Peregrinus, translates to "wanderer," "foreigner," "traveler," "pilgrim," or "outlander." These meanings resonate deeply with the Traveler, whose constellation and journey embody each of these qualities. This connection highlights the striking similarity between their destinies.[9]
- Only Archons have themselves as their constellations, with the exception of Aether (the Traveler) and Wanderer, who also have themselves as their constellations. Perhaps there's something unique about Aether that explains why he have himself as his constellation. For Wanderer, it could be because he once sought divinity and tried to become an Archon, leaving him with residual traces of that divine pursuit.
Aether and Scaramouche's gloves.
- Wanderer can now fly using the power of his Anemo Vision. Meanwhile, Aether—who once had this ability to fly—lost this after the Unknown God took away his powers. Their roles are reversed: Wanderer can now fly, while Aether now walks. On his birthday, Wanderer gives Aether a flight [possibly or they just hold hands] without teasing him, letting his relive the freedom he lost.
- Aether loves sweets and isn't fond of bitter tastes, while Wanderer is fond of bitter tastes and despises sweets.
- At the end of the cutscene in Xianyun's Story Quest, there's an interesting detail: some birds of the same species appear alongside the Wanderer in official art and the official trailer, are also seen with Aether. Additionally, the same type of birds are featured in both Raiden Ei's and Yae Miko's idle animations.
- The Wanderer and the Traveler are the only playable characters whose names you can customize[10]
- In Genshin story, they showed us the different titles of "Scaramouche": Kuronushi, Kunikuzushi, Kabukimono, the Balladeer, Shouki no Kami, Shouki no Kami, the Prodigal, Everlasting Lord of Arcane Wisdom, Sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, Hero of Simulanka, and Hero of Prophecy. The "Traveler (Aether)" also receives different titles in Teyvat: Honorary Knight of the Knights of Favonius, Visitor From Outer Worlds, Destined One , Captain of Swordfish II, First Sage of Buer, Fourth Descender, Master of the Jinni, Yasnapati of the Pari, Honorary Senior Researcher of the Fontaine Research Institute, Ann's Holy Blade of Narzissenkreuz, Super Zenith Boss-Level Force, God of Victorious Linebreaking, Witness of Teyvat, and more.
- Both thought that the Aranara resembled a "cabbage".
- "A cabbage that... moves?" — Wanderer in Web Event "Fluttering Footsteps In The Fields"
- "Kind of like... a cabbage?" — Aether [11]
- Both Aether and Wanderer have received nicknames based on their appearances. Wanderer is often referred to as "Hat Guy," while Aether is called "Blond-haired Outlander."
- Neither of them particularly likes these appearance-based nicknames, but they still allow others to call them by these names quite often.
- The Traveler is not fond of such nicknames, going as far as to call Taliesin's (and Paimon's "Blondie") "terrible-sounding, non-consensual appellations."[12] They also disapproved of Kichiboushi's nickname, but tolerated it for the duration of Eight Locales Over Mountains and Seas.
- Neither of them particularly likes these appearance-based nicknames, but they still allow others to call them by these names quite often.
- At the end of Wanderer's dialogue about Sethos, he remarks, "Hmph, somehow, everyone knows the name 'Hat Guy' now..." This, along with the conclusion of Bedtime Story 4.7 Archon Quest, suggests that neither Wanderer nor Aether is recognized by their real names.
- Aether is the only one who calls him by the name he gave him. Similarly, her twin sister Aether is the only person who knows his real name.
- Wanderer wields a golden sword known as the "Hero's Sword," while the Traveler has the "Hero's Blade" in Narzissenkreuz.[13]
- Both characters have flying companions: Paimon for the Traveler and Mini Durin for Wanderer.
- Both Wanderer and Aether rescued their companion.
- Both of them being an outlander from another world (Wanderer and Mini Durin in Simulanka) trying to save the world with their companions. The hero in Simulanka is from another world, and since Wanderer is the hero, he, too, is from an outer world in Simulanka.
- Aether and Wanderer (Hero of Simulanka) are both considered heroes.
- When Aether purified Dvalin's tear, its red color turned into blue. This parallels the moment when Wanderer gently reassures Durin, the Simulanka Dragon, saying, "It's alright now," as the dragon's red eyes shift to blue.
- Both characters also have similar voice lines, though Aether’s is during her Dendro elemental burst, while Wanderer’s plays when he starts sprinting:
- Aether: "Spring forth!"
- Wanderer: "Surge forth!"
- The Traveler is capable of wielding multiple elements. Similarly, during his divine form as Shouki no Kami, the Wanderer wielded multiple elements—Cryo, Pyro, Anemo, Hydro, and Electro—excluding Geo.
- Despite Scaramouche's Shouki no Kami god form having no Geo Element, some of his attack animations, particularly "Triple Earth Shock," are very similar to the Traveler's Geo Elemental Burst. Aether’s Geo Burst animation involves slamming his arm into the ground, while Lumine stomps her foot onto the ground — both motions are mirrored in Shouki no Kami's moves. In the "Triple Earth Shock" attack, Shouki no Kami first stomps with his foot and then performs two powerful arm slams, resembling both Traveler animations combined.
Other
- Kabukimono, Kunikuzushi, The Balladeer, and Scaramouche are all just titles, not his actual name. He never really had a true name to begin with. The only real name he ever had was the one Aether (the Traveler) gave him.
- Scaramouche is the second of the few characters (first is Nahida) who actually gave an information about Aether's twin sister, Aether.
- The only reason Scaramouche shared information about Aether's sister, which he learned from Pierro, was because "Aether looked upset." This suggests that he didn't want to see him distressed and chose to reveal what he knew in an attempt to ease his worries, showing a level of consideration for his feelings.
- Additionally, in Wanderer's Voice Line at the Imaginarium Theater, the Wanderer is reluctant to chat with Aether, however, when he gaves him a look, he agrees, asking if he is happy now.
- Similarly, when Durin asks Wanderer if he will join him, to which Wanderer replies with his usual annoyance, asking why he would do that. Durin, with childlike innocence, reminds Wanderer that he had said he wanted to be friends. Though Wanderer initially brushes this off and expresses frustration, saying he might have spoken too soon, it’s Aether’s subtle but meaningful influence that changes his mind. When he gives him a 'disapproving look,' Wanderer finally relents and agrees to join Durin.

- Scaramouche/Wanderer is one of the few characters whose aware that the Traveler comes from outside Teyvat.
- Wanderer is referred to be the Traveler’s companion.[14]
- Scaramouche has affection for those who peer into his past and consciousness, which is something Aether has done.
- In their first encounter, Aether’s first compliment to Scaramouche was about his unique clothing choices.
- Wanderer’s specialty dish, Shimi Chazuke, provides a healing bonus, suggesting that he cares about Aether.[15]
Wanderer always makes an exception for Aether
- These instances highlight that while Wanderer generally avoids social interactions and distractions, he consistently makes exceptions for Aether.
- In his birthday mail, Wanderer mentions that Nahida understands his dislike for being around others. However, when she suggests that he could at least visit Aether if he brings a gift, he finds the idea absurd— "But why should I give someone a present when it's my birthday?" Yet, despite his initial reluctance, he agrees anyway.
- Nahida also gives him a day off on his birthday, but in exchange, he must follow Aether.
- Wanderer may not be the type to "hold hands and dance with everyone," but he is the type to hold hands—but only with Aether, as he has asked him to hold his hand two times now.
- Wanderer canonically dislikes distractions, stating: "Hobbies? Those are for idle bodies who have the free time to think about such things. Do I look like I have any interest in distractions?" However, when Aether asks him to play Genius Invokation TCG with him, he reluctantly agrees: "...Tch, fine, if you insist, I'll play with you for a bit..."
- Additionally, during an interaction, Cyno asks Wanderer if he plays Genius Invokation TCG. Wanderer responds with, "No" and "I don't play." This indicates that while he generally avoids the game, he makes an exception to play it with Aether.[16]
- In the Wanderer’s voice line at the Imaginarium Theater, he is initially reluctant to chat with Aether. However, when he gives him a "upset" look, he ultimately gives in.

Yet, despite his initial reluctance, he agrees anyway.
- After Scaramouche erase all information of his entire existence from Irminsul, only The Traveler (Aether) still remember his existence, since he's a 4th Descender.
- Because Descenders come from outside Teyvat, they are not bound to the world's laws and are unaffected by circumstances that affect beings from this world, so when Scaramouche erased himself from Irminsul, Aether was not affected by this.
- The Wanderer only gives positive feedback if the player attempts to name him the same as the Traveler, saying, "You want to share your name with me? Huh, not a bad choice." If the player doesn't attempt to name the Wanderer the same as the Traveler, he responds with, "...Ah, alright, if you say so."
- Canonically, Aether worries about and cares for Scaramouche/Wanderer, even though they are technically enemies. Despite their past conflicts, he shows concern for his well-being and feelings.
- When Scaramouche gaves Aether a chance to kill him after he's done doing the job inside the Irminsul, he has no response.
- When Wanderer (with no memories) asks Aether why he's helping him if they were enemies before, he also has no response.
- When Aether explains Scaramouche's whole story to Nahida, it was described that he explained it "with a heavy heart".
- Aether wonders what might have happened to Scaramouche after he erased all traces of his existence from Irminsul. Paimon, who noticed his upset expression asks what’s wrong and why he looks so upset.
- Nahida can only make inferences about Scaramouche's character, but she acknowledges that Aether is the only one who truly remembers him. Aether, however, is uncertain. He recalls their past as enemies and wonders about his motivations—whether he wanted to reset everything, save someone, or erase himself completely. He remembers a question he asked him, a question that made him hesitate. His hesitation, rooted in witnessing Greater Lord Rukkhadevata's own self-erasure, gave him his answer, though he can't reveal this to Nahida. When Nahida notices Aether's worry, Aether responds depending on the dialogue options you choose:
- "I just feel... empty" and “He chose such a radical option, and yet...”
- Since the Wanderer is a person who wants to be alone all the time and seeks peace and quiet, it is surprising that he becomes really talkative when he is alone with Aether - "Although he usually seems to be difficult to get close to, but after getting along with him for a period of time, I feel that he actually talks a lot...it's not a bad thing, I listened to him while cooking."
- Scaramouche/Wanderer has a keen awareness of Aether's presence, as he always seems to sense whenever he is staring at him. This heightened perception indicates a deeper connection between them, suggesting that he is attuned to his feelings and attention, even in moments of distance or tension.
- Canonically, Aether worries about and cares for Scaramouche, even though they are technically enemies. Despite their past conflicts, he shows concern for his well-being and feelings.
- They canonically slept together (His Good Night, and Good Morning Voiceline)
- Wanderer's «Good Night» Voice Line Interpretation — The English voice line, "What, can't fall asleep with me around? Hehe," from Wanderer's «Good Night» dialogue is often interpreted as playful banter rather than a literal implication that Aether and Wanderer slept together. His mischievous personality suggests that the line is meant to tease Aether for feeling uneasy or distracted by his presence. However, translations in other languages suggest a slightly more intimate phrasing: Japanese Version: (僕がそばにいると眠れないかい?ふふっ) — "Can't you sleep when I'm next to you? Hehe." and Original Chinese Version: (在我身边睡不着吗?呵呵。) — "Can't you sleep next to me? Hehe." The phrasing in these versions comes across as more direct, implying physical proximity.
- In Wanderer's «Good Morning» he says "Rise and shine, sleepyhead, the sun's already in your eyes! ...Haha, don't tell me you actually thought I'd wake you up like that?". In Chinese Version: 「快醒醒——太阳要晒屁股咯——」…哈,你不会以为我会这么叫你起床吧? ("Wake up~ The sun's gonna shine on your butt~" ...Ha, you don't think I'd wake you up like that, do you?")
- In their Serenitea Pot interactions, Wanderer mentions that it's good Aether has a mean streak — "Anyway, it's probably a good thing that you have a mean streak", which means that he actually likes it when he's a bit tough or sharp with him. He seems to appreciate that side of his personality, possibly because it aligns with his own nature or because he respects someone who isn't overly soft or gentle in dealing with him.
Wanderer's expression in the party setup.
- Although the Wanderer, as a puppet, doesn’t need to eat, he still asks Aether to cook for him, showcasing his desire to spend time with him in a way that feels natural and human. When he presses him for input, his response is both practical and unexpectedly thoughtful: “Why don’t you make some of your personal favorites?” he suggests, adding, “So even if it gets painfully awkward during our meal, we can still at least enjoy the food.” His words reflect a subtle vulnerability, hinting at his awkwardness in navigating relationships, while also showing that he values his company enough to make the effort, even in the smallest ways.
- Xiao and Scaramouche's English voice actors role-played a scene where both characters are arguing. During the exchange, Xiao suggested they discuss everything over tea at Wanshu Inn with Aether, which Scaramouche thought was a nice idea.[17]
- In the 3.6 Japanese livestream, Wanderer mentions the Traveler four times, specifically referring to her as the in-game character rather than addressing the general player. Notably, he continues to bring up the Traveler even though he is absent from the livestream.
- Additionally, there's a line that reveals he praises Aether’s skills, which is surprising given his past remarks toward her, such as "You've changed. You're getting weak." This shift in tone suggests a significant change in his attitude toward Aether.
- Importantly, since Hoyoverse is responsible for writing the script for the livestream, this means they intentionally had Wanderer’s Japanese voice actor say this to the Traveler, further solidifying the change in how he addresses Aether.
- Interestingly, during this moment, his chibi avatar is seen blushing while talking about the Traveler. However, rather than appearing flustered, he tone remains confident and in-character, with his voice actor maintaining his usual sharp and assertive tone:Japanese: 「まあ、旅人ほどの腕が有れば。きっと難しい試練じゃないだろうけどね」 「マウントですか???僕は君の強さを身をもって知ってます。って事ですか?それってマウントですよね?なんですか????認めてるって事ですか???そうですよね、理解らされたもんね???」
English Translation: "Well, if you have the skills of a traveler, I'm sure it won't be a difficult trial."
"Is it a mount??? I know your strength firsthand. Do you mean? Is that a mount? What is it???? Are you admitting it??? That's right, did you understand???"
- In another moment from the 3.6 JP livestream, Wanderer makes a playful remark about Sorush, comparing it to Paimon, Aether's companion:[18]"Heh~ It seems that it can move freely, huh? (He's talking about Sorush here.) I wonder if this thing can compete in a fight... with the little chibi (he means Paimon, Aether's friend and companion) who's always near the Traveler (Aether)... Who is going to win?"
- Min Seung Woo (Scaramouche's KR Voice Actor) in 3.3 Special Program Livestream he tells the Traveler that he loves him.[19]
