In both the 1994 and 2019 versions of The Lion King, Sarafina is shocked and appalled when Scar allows the hyenas into the Pride Lands. She is not known to be present in any subsequent scenes. If she is alive at the time of Simba’s return, then it is probable that she sided with him against Scar and the hyenas. On the other hand, Sarafina’s death prior to Simba’s return could be a result, directly or indirectly, of Scar’s tyrannical rule of the Pride Lands. Notably, Scar seems to regard the lionesses primarily as his own personal hunters, with no apparent regard for their well-being.
Behind the scenes[]
Rob Minkhoff, one of the directors of The Lion King, expressed the view that Nala was the daughter of either Mufasa or Scar, meaning that one of them would have been involved with Sarafina[1] However, The Lion Guard episode "Paintings and Predictions" indicated that Nala's father-and thus Sarafina's mate-was an unidentified male lion who greatly resembled his grandson Kion in his youth.
Fanon[]
The ship is not especially popular among The Lion King fans, no doubt due in part to Sarafina's minor role in the original film as well as the remake. Of course, a major objection to the pairing lies in the idea that, if Scar were Nala's father through Sarafina, Simbala would become a ship between two first cousins. To many, this is only slightly preferable to the notion of Mufasa being Nala’s father. Moreover, a deleted song from the original film put forward Scarla as a toxic het ship, an idea all the more objectionable were Nala to be Scar and Sarafina's daughter.
However, certain fans favor the idea of Scar and Sarafina as a couple after she’s had Nala. Such works tend to portray Scar in a more sympathetic light. Alternatively, Sarafina may be attracted to Scar in spite of his villainy. Of course, she is typically unaware-as in the canon-of the fact that he murdered his brother and tried to murder his nephew.
The two are at times depicted as long time acquaintances and friends before eventually becoming romantic. Sarafina may also seek to help Scar become better, for the sake of their pride if not himself. In some cases, Sarafina is a former love interest of Scar’s, with the pair separating after he turned against Mufasa. Some works also take place in alternate continuities, with differing events working around the problems present with the relationship in canon.
Scarafina appears to be Sarafina's most popular ship with a known character, but is surpassed as a Scar ship by Scarira and even Scarabi. There are 14 works featuring the pairing on AO3, 3 of which are rated Mature or Explicit. 4 works are tagged for the pair platonically.
