Scaramouche (now Wanderer) is a character from the Genshin Impact fandom.
Character[]
Scaramouche, otherwise known as Wanderer, is a playable Anemo character in the game Genshin Impact. He is described as a “wandering vagrant from Inazuma”. He doesn’t care much for people or social obligations. He doesn’t have any interpersonal relationships, but he has an infamous reputation among the Fatui for being uncooperative and painfully stubborn, so much so that Fatui agents loath working under him.
Before experiencing the "three betrayals" that changed him and before regaining his lost memories, the Wanderer was kind, friendly, and curious about the world. In the earliest days after his creation, he was full of hope but also sensitive to the cruelties of the world, which, over time, embittered him and filled his heart with resentment. By the time the Traveler (Lumine/Aether) first encounters him in Sumeru, he is still relatively pleasant but haunted by a lack of purpose and, much like in his younger years, worried about his place in humanity due to his nature as a puppet. He also expresses a desire to understand what he has done in the past and reclaim that missing part of himself. However, upon regaining his memories, his personality shifts once more—becoming more cynical, prideful, and sharp-tongued, echoing his former self, Scaramouche. His worldview is deeply misanthropic, and he often looks down on others, though traces of his former self still remain beneath his arrogance.
Despite his general disdain for humanity, the Wanderer shares a unique and complex relationship with the Traveler. Unlike with most others, he does not keep them at arm’s length, showing an unusual level of comfort and trust when they are alone together. While he often teases them and maintains his sharp wit, he acknowledges their presence in his life in ways that he does not extend to others. This is evident in moments such as when Nahida, understanding his reclusive nature, suggests that if he must avoid people on his birthday, he could at least bring something to the Traveler—an idea he initially scoffs at but ultimately follows through on. His birthday messages also reflect this evolving dynamic, shifting from detached and begrudging to subtly acknowledging that there is someone he is willing to consider when the occasion arises.[1][2]
Although the Wanderer has no need for food since he's a puppet, he unexpectedly requests that the Traveler to cook for him, suggesting that he values their presence more than the meal itself. His fondness for bitter flavors reflects his worldview, as he believes bitterness represents life in its rawest form—unmasked by sweet illusions. When it is just the two of them, he speaks more than he typically does, revealing small but significant glimpses of his past and thoughts, a contrast to his usual reserved nature around others.[3][4]
Wanderer also shows sympathy for Mini Durin, recognizing that both of them have been betrayed and that such experiences have deeply affected their outlooks. Having once wished he had never been born due to his own despair, Wanderer expresses to Durin that this is not a wish anyone should make, offering him a rare moment of empathy and understanding. Both he and Durin share a past of having hurt others, but Wanderer encourages Durin to atone for his actions by helping those around the Broken Sea, though he is initially reluctant to join him. When Durin asks if Wanderer will help him, Wanderer grudgingly agrees after the Traveler gives him a disapproving look for not keeping his word.
While Nahida encourages him to see the good in humanity, the Wanderer remains wary and distant. However, his bond with the Traveler and Mini Durin stands apart—one of the few instances where his guarded nature softens, even if only slightly. Though he respects and listens to Nahida, the trust he places in the Traveler and Mini Durin is different, shown not through words but through his actions.
