Rover, it seems our happy little date... must come to an end.
—Scar to Rover, Chapter 1: Act III

Scarover is the non-binary ship between Scar and Rover from the Wuthering Waves fandom.

Canon[]

Before their canonical meeting, Scar and Rover had already become aligned with opposing factions. On one side is Rover, an amnesiac with mysterious past connections to powerful entities and the ability to absorb Threnodians into their own body. The other side is Scar, a loud and passionate Overseer in the Fractsidus, an extremist organization aiming to accelerate the next apocalyptic Lament event by resurrecting Threnodians - which becomes a key connection between the two considering Rover's abilities. As such, these two characters were set up narratively to confront each other as opposing sides.

Chapter 1 Act III: Ominous Star[]

“Forbidden memories of the past lay buried in ashes and ruins. The ominous "fractured star" beckons, holding untold secrets within its shadows. Secrets that still burn within a cindered heart.”
— Quest Description

Scar and Rover's first meeting in canon was set in the mysterious ruins of Qichi Village, which had become a host to a Tacet Field. Rover and Yangyang set out to investigate the ruins together, in the processes purifying the Tacet Field and any wandering Tacet Discords. After which, they begin to investigate the area and discover a strange tacet discord composed of the frequencies of humans that only seems able to weakly beg for help. They both decide to leave it be and continue looking around the area, eventually stumbling upon a pile of burned playing cards, which Yangyang identifies as belonging to a powerful Overseer of the Fractsidus. However, Yangyang is distracted by a kitten rustling in the bushes, and in that moment, Scar uses his illusionary abilities to abduct her, whisking her away without a trace.

Scarsintroduction

Scar introduces himself.

As Rover is frantically searching for Yangyang, Scar appears behind them atop a roof, shuffling his signature playing cards and stating with disappointment that he supposes doesn't need to introduce himself after spending time on it.

Scar's cunning, sinister and playful personality is on full display during this encounter, where Scar introduces himself as a "cruel and twisted manic." Despite this, Scar claims that he faces Rover with his absolute honesty and genuine sincerity, only removing Yangyang from the equation in order to speak to Rover privately, claiming that he didn't want their "precious alone time" to be disturbed, and that Yangyang would "sway" Rover's judgement.

Rover1

Scar casts doubt on Rover's companions

When Rover expresses concern regarding Yangyang's disappearance, Scar irritably remarks that Rover should "forget about that irrelevant person," and critiques Rover's companions, implying that they are disingenuous with their kindness, due to Rover's abilities and past, mentioning how many powerful factions have been fighting over them. He then motions to the ruins of Qichi Village, and asks Rover what they think occurred to cause the destruction, when Rover accuses the Fractsidus, Scar is disappointed and complains about people always assuming it's them.

Following this, Rover investigates the area and slowly pieces together the true story based on key items scattered around the ruins. Scar asks Rover what they believed to have happened.

Answer2

Scar is happy when Rover answers the second choice

Rover answers either "the Fractsidus manipulated the villagers" or "the villages killed each other." If the first answer is chosen, Scar is disappointed by Rover's black and white - good and evil stance, describing it as a "tired story" and asking if Rover truly believes that the real world can be so simple. If the second answer is chosen, Scar is very happy and praises Rover for their keen observation, judgement and understanding, stating that he likes it.

During this dialogue, Scar's animated and passionate personality is on full display as he ardently recounts the story of Qichi Village through the eyes of a child's fable about a misleading shepherd and greedy flock of lambs who sacrifice a black lamb to have their wishes granted — he stresses his compassion for the black lamb and claims that he self-identifies with the black lamb, as a rebel against the misleading shepherd, and the one who breaks the rules.

Mutal understanding

Scar states he wants to reach a mutual understanding with Rover

Despite his identity as a Fractsidus Overseer, he tells Rover that his goal is only to "deepen their mutual understanding," and continuously likens the both of them to the rebellious "black lamb" characters. Rover, however, expresses their disagreement with this assertion, arguing "he who fights too long against dragons becomes a dragon himself." Scar laughs maniacally at this remark, declaring that he likes Rover more and more.

Scar then initiates a battle in his illusion realm , and as Rover fights, Scar expresses his admiration for Rover's brutality, joyfully identifying them to be "kindred spirits." Throughout the battle, Scar passionately articulates his strong ideology. He declares that once the misleading shepherd is removed, the black lamb can reclaim the trust of the white lambs, eventually eliminating both victims and oppressors. However, the battle is abruptly cut short when Yangyang returns and shatters Scar's illusion realm.

Scarpromisesrover

Scar promises Rover they will meet again soon

When they return to reality, Scar is joined by another Fractsidus member, to which he remarks "Ugh. Didn’t you promise to leave me some alone time with Rover?" Before leaving, Scar addresses Rover, smiling as he states he has trust in them to make the right choice and looks forwards to their final decision.

As Scar and the Fractsidus member retreat into a portal, and he comments, "Rover, it seems our happy little date must come to an end," promising that they will meet again very soon with a wink. Rover and Yangyang decide against pursuing them and instead regroup with their companions.

Chapter 1 Act IIII: Clashing Blades[]

“You have discovered the three tokens' purpose and directions, but the answers to their riddles are hidden behind a mysterious entrance, which you find with the help of the sundial's hints.”
— Quest Description

Following some discussion and investigation, Rover meets with the Magistrate of Jinzhou, Jinshi, who requests their help to set a trap and capture Scar by luring him to Jinzhou's Grand Library Database by having Rover lead the way. The trap works, and Scar confidently strides in, gleefully expressing his urge to blow up the entire building.

However, Rover stands in front of the database, blocking Scar from accessing the information, at first he attempts to flee but is stopped by Jinshi and Sanhua. This confrontation quickly escalates into a fierce battle between Scar and Rover. During the battle, Scar absorbs and merges with a Tacet Discord, transforming into Scar: Aberrant Nightmare, a vaguely black ram-like creature with elongated limbs and yellow eyes. He asks Rover if they offered themself up to become his prey, and angrily questions why Rover won't place their trust in him. Upon defeat, Scar is forced to transform back and is apprehended by the Magistrate of Jinzhou.

Thefractsidus'goal

Scar explains their goal to Rover

As Scar is subdued and handcuffed, Jinshi asks Rover if they was hurt during the battle, to which Scar interjects that he could "never have the heart" to hurt Rover. Following this, Rover is allowed the opportunity to ask Scar questions, which Scar claims to answer with honesty and sincerity. When Rover asks, "Why were you following me?" Scar's expression shifts into an open smile, and he answers that their goal is the same, that they want and need Rover, to join the Fractisdus. During this exchange, it is revealed that Scar and Fractisdus, wish to topple a set future based on lies and reclaim control of their own destiny, criticise the people's fear of the Lament and proclaims it to be salvation, the only path to a new civilisation. In response to Rover's further inquiry, "Why me? And if I refuse?" Scar asserts that Rover underestimates their own value, insisting that the Fractisdus' interest in Rover transcends superficial concerns. After this last interaction, Scar is then escorted away to be imprisoned.

Fanon[]

Scarover initially circulated within niche circles during the open beta phase. However, with the official launch and the release of Wuthering Waves, Scarover has surged in popularity across the both the Western and Eastern fandoms. Due to the player's ability to choose Rover's gender, there are two versions of the ship name that fans use to distinguish one from another: Scarover, which most commonly pairs the Male Rover with Scar, and Scarfrover which pairs the Female Rover with Scar. Despite both characters sharing animations and dialogue options, some fans have assigned different characteristics to Male and Female Rover. Where Female Rover is usually portrayed as a powerful, confident, and strong woman, which is in-line with her serious voice-acting, Male Rover is often depicted as serious, yet 'puppy-like' character - with fans often pointing out his larger eyes, and softer voice. These differences in character direction, particularly in the English-speaking community, have led fans to adopt the headcanon that Male Rover and Female Rover are siblings or sibling-like characters.

With Scar's connection to the Fractsidus, his intense attitude and passionate overt interest in Rover, in conjunction with Rover's mysterious past, has sparked a plethora of fan works and theories exploring their relationship and potential lore connections. Some speculate that Scar's faction, the Fractsidus, might actually represent the "good" side in the narrative, flipping the conventional perceptions. On the other hand, others envision a tragic, star-crossed lovers' ending for Scarover, examining the layers of the emotional depth of their complicated dynamic.

Despite the tragic lore implications, their dynamic is often depicted by fans as an comedic Enemies to Lovers, with Scar boldly, flirtatiously proclaiming his interest in Rover, while Rover plays the role of the embarrassed and vaguely annoyed straight-man who keeps Scar grounded and under control.

Some fans often compare them to ScaraLumi or Scaraether from the Genshin Impact fandom because both ships begin with the characters as enemies. The comparison is further drawn due to Scaramouche and Scar sharing the "Scar" prefix in their names.
