Schrucy is the het ship between Schroeder and Lucy Van Pelt from the Peanuts fandom.

Canon[]

Schroeder and Lucy Van Pelt are two very prominent characters in Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic strip, with Schroeder debuting on May 30, 1951, as a baby who quickly grows into the piano-playing prodigy obsessed with Beethoven, and Lucy arriving on March 3, 1952, as a bossy, opinionated toddler who matures into the strip’s loudmouth. Lucy's love for Schroeder began in the strip from January 27, 1953, where she misheard Schroeder discuss the Nutcracker Suite, thinking he meant "sweet". This resulted in Lucy developing a crush on him. Their dynamic is one of the most recurring in the series, defined by Lucy’s unrequited, deep affection for Schroeder and his indifference. She frequently leans upon Schroeder's piano, trying to get his attention, but usually fails. Schroeder would rather play his piano than listen to her. Lucy's first attempt to get his attention would be on a January 3, 1954 strip, where she jumps on his piano and dances on it, leaving scratches and foot marks all over it. This is also where she first says her "I'll probably never get married" catchphrase after his rejection.

Throughout the strip’s run and its TV specials, their relationship remains a comedic push-and-pull. Lucy’s persistence is a constant: she offers compliments, proposes marriage, or pesters him with questions about Beethoven, while Schroeder’s responses range from mild annoyance to outright rejection. Despite her efforts, their interactions never evolve into mutual romance. Schroeder’s devotion to Beethoven discards any interest in Lucy, though he tolerates her presence as a friend.

Schroeder and Lucy's personalities highlight both contrast and overlap. Lucy’s brash and domineering nature clashes with Schroeder’s quiet and introspective focus, yet both exhibit a stubborn streak—Lucy in pursuing Schroeder and Schroeder in resisting. Lucy regularly vexes and perplexes Schroeder with speculations about what their lives would be like if they were married. In one instance, she reels off an extravagant list of luxuries she’d require to uphold a high-society existence, then quizzes him on whether pianists earn a good living. When Schroeder responds that it hinges on how much they practice, she encourages him to keep practicing.

However, certain Peanuts strips suggest Schroeder might harbor subtle feelings for Lucy despite his usual resistance. For example, in the May 16, 1966 strip—part of a storyline where Lucy and her family temporarily move away, later adapted into the TV special Is This Goodbye, Charlie Brown?—Schroeder reflects on their shared moments and grows visibly upset over not saying goodbye. Frustrated with his piano practice, he mutters in disbelief that he misses her, hinting that Lucy, unbeknownst to herself, has become his unexpected muse. In another moment, as he plays, her face appears to him in the music swirling above, prompting him to parody Henry Higgins from Pygmalion with, "Don’t tell me I’ve grown accustomed to THAT face," a line originally featured in Play It Again, Charlie Brown.

Fanon[]

Schrucy is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, pairing in Peanuts, liked for its canon tension and the potential to reimagine Lucy’s pursuit to be reciprocated by Schroeder. In fanfiction, stories often depict Schroeder gradually warming to Lucy’s affection, or realizing that he was in love with her as they grow older.

On AO3, the "Schroeder/Lucy Van Pelt" tag has over 300 works as of March 2025. They are the most written ship under the Peanuts tag.
