- Member 76 of the Genius Society, Screwllum. I have known him for a long time. He is a really good man, a gentleman with an exceptional mechanical mind. I have learned a lot from him.
- —Herta about the Screwllum portrait in her office
Screwherta is the het ship between Herta and Screwllum from the Honkai: Star Rail fandom.
Canon[]
Herta and Screwllum are both members of the Genius Society, an intergalactic organization whose members were selected by Nous the Erudition. Along with fellow geniuses Ruan Mei and Stephen Lloyd, they've been working together on developing the Simulated Universe with the goal of finding out the truth about the Aeons. While Herta provides the resources and the location, Screwllum is responsible for writing the underlying code of the Universe.[1]
Other than heavily featuring in Silver Wolf's Companion Mission "Punklorde Mentality" and the Penacony Adventure Mission "The Trees at Peace", the two frequently appear together in missions related to the Simulated Universe game mode. Herta is the first character to mention Screwllum's name to the Trailblazer during its first tutorial mission and, after completing the Simulated Universe for the first time, she mentions him again when asked about the Stellaron Hunters.
She describes Silver Wolf as the first person to be on par with Screwllum's hacking skills, which she considers to be the "best in the universe", and says that being on the same level as him is nothing short of spectacular.[2][3] She also characterizes him as a "really good man" and "a gentleman with an exceptional mechanical mind", and says that she's learned a lot from working with him. Herta's office, which is also where the Simulated Universe can be accessed, hosts various portraits of members of the Genius Society, including Screwllum. Furthermore, Herta frequently addresses Screwllum with the affectionate nickname "Screwy" — something she seemingly hasn't done with anyone else so far — and Screwllum never reacts to it in a surprised manner, implying familiarity and/or a possible friendlier dynamic than the often aloof and unfeeling Herta seems to have with most of her acquaintances. She also often brings him up in conversation, most notably inside the Simulated Universe, usually with off-handed remarks about needing him to revise a code or fix a bug.
Screwllum, in turn, describes Herta as a rare soul who is actually worthy of being called a true "genius", and holds a lot of respect for her as a person and as a researcher. He considers the Simulated Universe a great project that he is honored to be a part of, and says that nothing will change his opinion of it, despite the differences he and Herta have in terms of research direction. He holds his conversations with Herta in high regard as well — he mentions that they are always "frank with one another" and that they have animated discussions on various matters on a daily basis, although it is unclear whether said discussions only concern the Simulated Universe or not. He seemingly cares a lot about her wellbeing outside of work related matters, and calls her a "dear friend" while trying to lure Silver Wolf into a trap. Screwllum often brings her up in dialogue too, such as when introducing himself — he immediately assumes that Herta must have mentioned his name before, and recognizes the Trailblazer as the one "Herta is always talking about".
Punklorde Mentality[]
- Although Madam Herta and I have our differences in terms of research direction, the Simulated Universe is our shared pursuit and nothing will change that.
- —Screwllum about his collaborative efforts with Herta
Moments before Screwllum's sudden arrival at Herta Space Station — this being his first appearance in-game as a character — and Arlan identifying him as Herta's research partner, the Trailblazer recalls Herta talking about him before. Right after greeting Asta, Screwllum also recognizes the Trailblazer as "the one Herta is always talking about", and declines Asta's offer to show him around the station on account of having to attend a meeting with Herta. Later on, in their mission to find out more about a series of suspicious graffiti left behind by the Stellaron Hunter Silver Wolf, the trailblazer and the researcher Leonard end up visiting Herta's office to talk to her about the disappearance of a mysterious curio from her collection.
They walk in on Herta and Screwllum arguing about potentially shutting down the Simulated Universe, with Screwllum asserting that it has "become something far removed from its original purpose", and then asking her how many disappointments it has given her, considering all the resources they've invested into something that only resulted into mostly unknowns, errors, and confusion. Herta refutes all his words, and reacts by telling him the Simulated Universe "never disappointed her", and that Screwllum was the one who did. She then makes fun of him by asking him if he thinks of himself as someone "exceptionally amazing", and calls him a member of the "Nitwit Society", leaving him stunned. He softens the blow by telling her he never meant to question her or the hard work she put in the project, but Herta doesn't let him say anything else and tells him to leave, bring his tech with him and to tell the other two — Ruan Mei and Stephen — about the news himself. Before the scene ends, she says that, despite knowing each other for a long time, this is the first time she's thought of him as nothing but a piece of ice-cold metal.
When the Trailblazer and Leonard approach him, Screwllum explains that it was him who proposed to end the Simulated Universe and thus their academic collaboration. Despite calling the project a great experiment and Herta a true genius, he also says that their difference will manifest into bias that in the long run will get in the way of the formulation of knowledge. Even if he wants to believe in Herta, he still thinks that a collaboration that no longer holds true to its initial intent is something not worth pursuing. After the Trailblazer explains the reason for their visit, Screwllum says he will temporarily shut down the Simulated Universe and that, since it will stay that way until he reaches a consensus with Herta, this is their last chance to investigate the curio they're looking for. After entering the Simulated Universe, the Trailblazer asks Screwllum whether they are actually shutting it down, and Screwllum tells them he has other concerns other than the ones he mentioned to Herta. He then says he believes that Herta is slowly moving further away from the Universe she had hoped for, that those endless iterations are wearing down her talents day by day — and that his hope is to free her "dear friend" from that burden.
Later on, after meeting a hologram Silver Wolf while exploring the Universe, Screwllum tells the Trailblazer about the time he faced off against Silver Wolf (referring to the Stellaron Hunter's attempt to infiltrate and hack Screwllum's planet, Planet Screwllum), and mentions that Herta was there and she may have mentioned it before. He also says that, according to Herta, there was no loser that day, and he himself describes it as a test rather than a duel. As they follow after Silver Wolf, the Hunter makes a few comments about the array of dolls, portraits, and statues of herself that Herta keeps all over the space station, and Screwllum mentions that Herta once commissioned him to design an encryption tool for her. He concludes that she must have used it for one of those portraits.
As they continue on, Silver Wolf eventually reveals that the hologram was never actually a hologram and actually has been herself in real time all along, with Screwllum also admitting that he knew about it since the start but wasn't able to talk about it because Herta forbade him from doing it. Silver Wolf then puts the pieces of the puzzle together and realizes that the argument about shutting down the Universe had all been a way to try and lure her in. When she asks him directly, Screwllum's cryptic answer is that whether the argument was real or not could be up to interpretation, as he and Herta have always been "frank with one another", and that "conversation of that nature happen on a regular basis" between them — and as such it would be reductive to call it an act. Despite that revelation, Silver Wolf expresses joy at having been able to face Screwllum, whom she deems a worthy opponent and the only one capable of offering her a fun challenge, pointing out how Herta was likely hiding and working behind the scenes while Screwllum takes her head-on, "just like last time" — in reference to the events on Planet Screwllum. When she expresses surprise at Screwllum not trying to "catch her", Screwllum explains that the real curio was never in danger, and that she can share the data freely with no repercussions. He then adds that he and Herta will no longer "enable her" and give her "what she needs", and that Herta also decided to reverse-hack Silver Wolf and to get the IPC to freeze all of her 76 gaming accounts.
Once Silver Wolf leaves and the Trailblazer leaves the Simulated Universe, they ask Screwllum whether the Universe will actually be shut down, to which Screwllum replies that the Universe is their "shared pursuit" and that "nothing will change that", assuring them that the project will continue.
The Trees at Peace[]
- Throughout the long journey, I rarely met souls that truly deserved to be called a "genius." Madam Herta is one of them, and so is Calderon Chadwick.
- —Screwllum about Herta
After the events of "When the Stars of Ingenuity Shines" and "Whodunit", the Trailblazer runs into an old man called Chadwick who, after being influenced by the Trailblazer's Clockwork ability, claims that he once was a member of the Genius Society. When offered help, Chadwick accepts, and the Trailblazer sends a text to Herta to ask her whether she knows a Genius by the name of Chadwick, to which Herta reacts with shock and a request to meet her at the space station.
Upon reaching her office, the Trailblazer is surprised to see Screwllum in the room with her. Screwllum greets them, and Herta tells him to forgo the pleasantries and cut to the chase. To that, Screwllum argues that they are in no rush — Chadwick has already been stuck in Penacony for thousands of system hours, and therefore a few minutes to discuss the issue won't be a problem. Herta disagrees with his words, telling him that, while Screwllum can "act righteous" all he wants, she can no longer wait, because the information they're there to discuss is too valuable. Screwllum then tells the Trailblazer Chadwick's real name, Calderon Chadwick, and that he once was member #79 of the Genius Society — a researcher who could boast groundbreaking achievements and valuable expertise in his field, and someone Screwllum considers a rare soul worthy of being called a "genius" among the large number of people he's come across in his journey throughout the cosmos. He then adds that Herta is one of those geniuses too, and Herta thanks him for "throwing in a compliment" for her. He recalls being asked for help from Chadwick decades ago, when Chadwick was already fifty, and concludes that he must have been trapped in Penacony's dreamscape and stripped of his memories. Herta asks him what he intends to do, and Screwllum decides he will head to Penacony himself along with the Trailblazer.
Later on in the mission, once Screwllum and the Trailblazer find Chadwick and learn of his story, Chadwick asks Screwllum whether he knows anything about what the other members of the Genius Society think of him. Screwllum tells him he has not gathered many opinions on that matter, but he does have Herta's assessment to convey on her behalf — Chadwick has achieved breakthroughs that not even immortals could conquer, and therefore he is worthy of being called a true genius. Chadwick then laughs as his consciousness dissipates. Afterwards, once the Trailblazer finds out that Chadwick is no longer in the dreamscape, Screwllum informs them that he has managed to convince The Family to let him bring the remnants of Chadwick's memoria to Herta Space Station, and says that the Trailblazer is welcome to join him and Herta as they pay their final respects, and thus will await them with Herta in the Seclusion Zone.
Once the Trailblazer joins Herta and Screwllum again, Screwllum explains how The Family managed to keep Chadwick's consciousness alive for so long. Herta comments that he must have been truly determinate to resist the IPC until now, and that she was right about him back then, and Screwllum tells her that he's always been a genius, but he hasn't always been this determined. The three then turn off the devices keeping the Memory Bubble alive and say their final words to Chadwick. When it is Herta's turn, everyone's surprised to hear Chadwick's residual consciousness speak, and express a wish for Herta to acquire his knowledge and memories. Screwllum then says Chadwick must have chosen to entrust his life's work to Herta, even though they had never met before then. Finally, Herta decides to honor Chadwick's wishes and keep his research safe from the IPC despite her partnership with them.
Antinomic Waltz[]
- This is the first time you've seen so many Hertas. However, before you whip out the popcorn, maybe it would be best to ask Screwllum what happened first.
- —Mission Objective
Upon visiting Herta's office for one of their routine testing sessions, the Trailblazer runs into Screwllum staring at a dormant Herta doll while surrounded by various other dolls scattered around the room — as he's talking to himself, he says that he's trying to send a message to Herta for the 1291st time (possibly suggesting he has been standing there doing it the entire time). Screwllum informs them that the testing will be delayed because the Simulated Universe project has run into a massive issue: a void (which seems to belong to the era of the "Scholars' Strife", a period that is of interest to Herta's research) that cannot be interfered with appeared inside it, and when observing it from the outside, all that can be seen is a chaotic "Unknowable Domain". He adds that Herta has decided to explore it and connected herself to it but, moments afterwards, lost contact with him and sent all her puppets into shutdown. He also says that she's been inside, and thus unreachable, for 33 system hours, and that the most logical way to solve the issue would be to send the Trailblazer there so Screwllum can stay outside to monitor the situation, fix any problems with the program, and save them if needed — if Screwllum were to try and connect to it himself, he would end up in the same situation as her.
The Trailblazer agrees that it's an urgent emergency and accepts. Once connected to the Simulated Universe, Screwllum explains to the Trailblazer why Herta is interested in the Scholars' Strife. Upon being asked, he clarifies that researching it and the Scepter system is Herta's objective alone this time. When the Trailblazer finds her, she's surprised at their presence and tells them to go somewhere else for testing; at that point, Screwllum interjects and tells her that he was the one who sent them, since she had been missing for what now have become 34 hours. Herta is once again surprised, and she comes to the conclusion that the Domain must interfere with one's sense of time as well — it is then revealed that she wasn't in any danger like Screwllum thought, and that she simply forgot to leave.
Herta then mentions the Circle of Knowledge, asking the Trailblazer if they know about it, and Screwllum praises her for it, commenting that it's a very astute metaphor. Herta goes on to explain her thoughts about it, seemingly getting frustrated about the limits of the Unknowable Domain, and Screwllum comments that she may be applying "a subjective quality to objective obstacles", and that subjectivity is the enemy of research. She says that, while it may look like subjective conjecture to some, it is a flash of inspiration to a genius. Then, she adds that something might be trying to stop the Simulated Universe from unearthing secrets about the Scholars' Strife, and Screwllum says that it might be Mythus the Enigmata (an Aeon whose philosophy aims to hide the truth by tampering with history) casting their gaze over the Simulated Universe. He also says that he has 3215 other deductions, and asks her which one she wants to hear. Herta then tells him that his words sound more like subjective conjecture — likely to get back at him for suggesting hers were moments earlier.
After going back to her office, Herta and Screwllum start discussing what to do next and speculating that the Enigmata might actually be involved. She asks Screwllum about improving the accuracy of the simulated Scepter, and then says she wants to add a fifth Genius to the project — a simulated "recreation" of Rubert II. Screwllum tells her that, while Ruan Mei and Stephen (the third and fourth Geniuses) might be in agreement, he has reservations about it, and Herta says he must be at least curious about it. Screwllum then says that, "to be objective", his analysis does hold a 15% weightage of curiosity.
Once the player clears some of the stages, Herta and Screwllum discuss the creation of the Domain once more, and come to the conclusion that it must have been another Genius. Before Herta and the Trailblazer connect to the Unknowable Domain again, Screwllum tells them that no matter what happens, they must return safe and sound. Once connected, they run into Polka Kakamond (Genius Society #4, the Lord of Silence, known for killing many members of the organization), receive help from Stephen and Ruan Mei (who tells Herta that Screwllum sends a message: "The bait has been laid, and we're just waiting for the prey to bite") and have an encounter with Aha the Elation (who in the past managed to break the simulation) who sends the situation into chaos and "saves" them.
Back to reality, Herta and Screwllum discuss Polka's appearance and how Rubert II's data somehow got corrupted to that extent. Screwllum then wonders why Polka would walk into their "trap" if she didn't want to join their project, and Herta says that maybe she wanted to get revenge on them for talking about her age behind her back, and that everyone in the Genius Society has a few screws loose. When Screwllum asks what they'll do about the fifth collaborator, Herta says she hopes Ruan Mei can rope Yu Qingtu into it. Upon talking to Screwllum again, he tells the Trailblazer that he's glad that they and Herta are back safe and sound and that, while they might have "overdone" it, the two of them are more important than operational efficacy.

Fanon[]
Screwherta started gaining attention after Silver Wolf's companion mission showed their dynamic on screen, with many fans pointing out that their interactions during the quest gave off a partners-in-crime or "old married couple" vibe when dealing with Silver Wolf. Since then, most people who are drawn to the ship tend to enjoy Herta and Screwllum as close research partners with a shared goal, usually though not always with a heavy focus on the robot/human aspect of their relationship. With both characters being implied to have unnaturally long lifespans (with Screwllum being a mechanical lifeform and Herta a human who managed to reverse her own age), the gentle and eloquent Screwllum is often portrayed as the more "human" side of the relationship, while Herta's status as an Emanator of The Erudition and her general lack of interest towards the mundane has led many to headcanon her as a human who gradually lost touch with humanity — many shippers see this "role reversal" of sorts as one of the main selling points of the ship.
With Herta treating Screwllum much more affectionately than almost everyone else she talks to (praising his skills, having his portrait in her office, giving him the nickname "Screwy", etc) and Screwllum often worrying about her and bringing her up in conversation often, a common sentiment is that the two share a close relationship no matter its nature. Many also enjoy using Herta's "special treatment" towards him (as opposed to Screwllum being kind and cordial to everyone) as fuel for angst situations where Herta finds herself worrying if her feelings are one-sided. Conversely, Screwllum is sometimes portrayed as the one with one-sided feelings, with Herta being the one who's grown too cold to indulge in such emotions.
Other common portrayals usually involve Screwllum and Herta taking care of each other during the long hours of their Simulated Universe research, both of them struggling to come to term with their emotions towards each other (often with Screwllum unexpectedly being the one who manages first), and the amusing contrast between their seemingly opposite personalities.
Many also ship Screwherta's OT3 variant with Ruan Mei as the Simulated Universe crew (often with Stephen Lloyd tagging along as their "kid", since the bits of info that are known about him imply he's still a child), with fewer enjoying their dynamic with Dr. Ratio as well. Screwllum/Herta/Silver Wolf is also a popular platonic combo, with Screwllum having a longer history of friendship/rivalry with Silver Wolf, and Herta joining after the events of her companion mission.

Trivia[]
- During the adventure mission "The Trees at Peace", the Trailblazer has a dialogue option where they refer to Screwllum as "Screwy" ("Screwy... I've never seen this side of him."), the nickname Herta sometimes uses for Screwllum.[4] The Trailblazer picking the habit up might imply that Herta calls him that very often, even around other people — though she had also just called him that earlier in the mission in the Trailblazer's presence.
- In the group chat shown in the "Keeping Up With Star Rail" video for the Divergent Universe (in which both Herta and Screwllum make cameos in chibi form while sitting next to each other)[5], Screwllum's display name is also set to "Screwy" without Herta's input, which would imply he changed it to that himself. When Silver Wolf joins the group chat, both Herta and Screwllum reply to her arrival with a single "?"
- In the same video, Silver Wolf shows a flashback to the events of her companion mission (where Herta and Screwllum froze all her gaming accounts) when Owlbert says the Divergent Universe is Screwllum's creation and not Herta's.
- In one of the cutscenes from "When the Stars of Ingenuity Shine", holograms of Herta and Screwllum appear to be having what seems to be an animated conversation around Ruan Mei while she reflects on her cat cake creations.[6]
- In the "Penacony Food Fest" event, the player could send samples of Penacony's food to up to two characters each day for them to try it out. Herta and Screwllum were the two characters for day one of the event (Herta comments that it's too sweet, while Screwllum finds the concept of recreating taste via Memory Bubbles interesting).[7]
- In the official Divergent Universe gameplay guide[8] on HoYoLAB, Herta makes a cameo in an in-game screenshot next to a knocked down Downloader to show that, in this new iteration of the game mode (canonically curated by Screwllum himself in collaboration with Dr. Ratio), Screwllum has removed the feature altogether. Additionally, she also appears in another screenshot to show that the player can switch characters from their full roster and into their team any time without restrictions.
- Among the Divergent Universe gameplay rewards, there is a profile picture of Herta's Simulated Universe avatar.[9]
- In the introduction mission for the Divergent Universe, Screwllum talks about the conversation he had with Dr. Ratio that led to the development and thematic choice of his new project, and mentions that Herta had expressed an opposing view on Aeons and mortals to that of Dr. Ratio's.[10]
- In order to find Screwllum and start the aforementioned mission, the player must head to Herta's Office.
- Herta and Screwllum can be seen standing together in Herta's office looking at Simulated Universe occurrences in the Version 1.3 trailer, "Celestial Eyes Above Mortal Ruins".[11]
- They appear together in the art for the "Geniuses' Repose" light cone, along with Ruan Mei.[12]
- They appear together next to each other in a Ruan Mei official art as cat cakes.[13]
- Together with Ruan Mei and Owlbert, Herta and Screwllum were the hosts of the 1.6 Special Program, "Crown of the Mundane and Divine".[14]
- Together with Owlbert, Herta and Screwllum presented the "Keeping Up With Star Rail" Special Program for the Unknowable Domain expansion of the Simulated Universe. Herta and Owlbert are alone at first, but Screwllum shows up when Herta asks him to join them with a phone call.[15]
- In the Simulated Universe: Gold and Gears occurrence "Mechanical City 'Cogito Hair Salon' — Genius Society", they are the only ones speaking in the dialogue even though it is implied that Ruan Mei and Stephen Lloyd are both present.[16]
- Herta keeps six portraits of Genius Society members in her office: while one is of herself, the other ones depict Zandar, Polka Kakamond, Elias Salas, Aiden, and finally Screwllum — each one with a voiced description. According to Herta's words it is likely that, while she admires all of them to various degrees and for a reason or another, Screwllum is the only one of them whom she has met and frequently works with.[17]
- The player can find hologram projections of both Herta and Screwllum together in Transaction Domains and buy blessings and curios from them when playing the Gold and Gears expansion of the Simulated Universe.
- They both appeared in an official chibi art for a Weibo event dedicated to the Swarm Disaster expansion of the Simulated Universe. In the art, they're pictured playing a game in the space station while holding dice and with a spark connecting their heads together, implying a spirit of competition. Arlan, Asta, and Peppy are also pictured spying on them in the background.[18]
- According to Screwllum, Herta was present during his hacking duel against Silver Wolf.[19]
- In her "Something to Share" voiceline, Silver Wolf mentions Herta's portrait of Screwllum and how she made changes to it but eventually decided to revert them back.[20]
- Screwllum is mentioned in the readable "Herta's Manuscripts", where Herta states that, to her knowledge, Screwllum wrote a booklet to educate his butler on the maintenance of a large computer management system.[21]
- In the readable "Genius Society: Research Results", its author mentions Herta and Screwllum along with Ruan Mei and Stephen Lloyd, and wonders whether their "stable triangle" (which they later correct to "quadrangle" upon recalling Stephen's contributions) will crumble with the addition of hypothetical new members or not.[22]
- Screwllum makes an appearance in the "Keeping Up With Star Rail" video for the Swarm Disaster expansion, which was hosted by Owlbert and Herta — Owlbert tries to call him, but the call goes to voicemail as Screwllum states he is otherwise occupied at the moment.[23]
- In that same video, the shot of Herta and Screwllum together in her office from the 1.3 trailer is shown again.[24]
