Donald joins the navy, leaving his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie in the care of their Uncle Scrooge. Donald admits that Scrooge is cheap, but tells the boys that they have to respect him because he's family. Scrooge arrives at the dock, and chides Donald for his decision to enlist. Donald tells him that he wants to see the world, and that it's too late for his mind to be changed. Scrooge demands to know why he's being forced to look after the triplets, and Donald reveals that Scrooge is the only one that he trusts them with.

Donald appears sporadically throughout the first season of the show, often when he is on leave from the navy and able to meet up with Scrooge and the boys for an adventure. However, he makes no appearances in the three subsequent seasons or the theatrical film.

DuckTales (2017)[]

Season One[]

Donald was once Scrooge's adventuring sidekick beside his sister Della, since they were kids. From when Scrooge was asked to look after the two and found himself bringing them along during a treasure hunt for a magical scroll, since then Scrooge brought his sister's kids with him for all of his adventures. Until Donald found himself becoming the guardian of Della's unhatched triplets and cut ties with Scrooge, for building the rocket that got Della lost in space. Donald didn't want that rocket to build, from wanting Della to put adventures on hold, but Scrooge thought it would have made a nice surprise for her. Blaming Scrooge for what happened to his sister, Donald decided to keep Della's sons away from the one who caused the loss of their mother. The events of that day also got both Scrooge and Donald to put their adventure days behind them.

Years later when Donald had a job interview, but needed someone to watch over the boys, he turns to his Uncle Scrooge. Even though they haven't spoke to one another in years, and the Duck triplets had no idea that Donald was the nephew of the Scrooge McDuck, Donald still trusts Scrooge to watch the boys. Donald needs work and has little choice but to apply for a job at Flintheart Glomgold's company; unknowing to him, this is Scrooge's arch enemy. He joins Glomgold on a submarine expedition, and discovers that Scrooge has taken the nephews along on his own submarine trip. Donald loses it, threatening to kill Scrooge, before he decides to tail Scrooge and the boys to ensure that they are kept out of trouble.

Donald is captured by Glomgold and used as bait for Scrooge. Donald yells that he shouldn't have trusted Scrooge, and blames him for Della's disappearance. Scrooge tries to claim his innocent, but Dewey interrupts and helps save them from Glomgold's plan. When they return to Duckburg, Donald suggest that the boys can spend more time with Scrooge to learn how to get out of trouble. However, when the triplets reveal that Donald's house boat has been ruined the four of them move into McDuck Manor.

In "The Spear of Selene!", the Sunchaser crashes in Ithaquack. Having been here before, Scrooge and Donald begin to panic. They try and keep the children on board and convince Launchpad McQuack to get the plane back into the air, but he refuses. Scrooge says that they stopped vacationing there because the gods always tried to rope them into competitions. This excites Huey and Louie, but both Donald and Scrooge want to leave as soon as possible. Scrooge takes to teasing Donald about his friendship with Storkules, which annoys Donald to no end.

When the triplets learn the truth about their mother and Uncle Scrooge, they decide to leave McDuck Manor. Donald goes with them, and they take the house boat back to the Duckburg marina. Donald suggests that they move away to Cape Suzette, and the boys agree. However, Webby Vanderquack and Mrs. Beackly stage an intervention in an attempt to convince Donald and the triplets to return to Scrooge. While the boys are still upset, Donald is the one who relents and agrees that they should head back to McDuck Manor. He doesn't want to see his family torn apart for any longer. When they discover that Scrooge is in danger from the likes of Magica De Spell, Donald rallies everyone together to help come to Scrooge's aid.

Fanon[]

The relationship between Donald and Scrooge is a beloved one in the Disney fandom. They have a long history together, starting in the comics in the 1950s and carrying on into animation. Their relationship was greatly expanded upon in the DuckTales reboot, giving them history and an interesting background that truly captivated audiences. Prior to this series, they had both been portrayed as goofy cartoon characters; DuckTales (2017) brought genuine heart and depth to their relationship. Due to Donald's minor role in the original DuckTales series, fans of that show do not hold a strong affinity towards this relationship.

Scronald has over 300 works on AO3. It is the ninth most popular ship in the DuckTales (2017) tag, and the most popular ship in the "Disney Duck Comics" tag. It is Donald's second most popular ship, and his most popular non-romantic ship.
