- Nam-gyu – “Look who's on her period. I told you we shouldn't let a girl join”
- Se-mi – “Look who's talking. Nervous Tweaker”
- — Six Legs
Semigyu is the het ship between Nam-gyu and Se-mi from the Squid Game fandom.
Canon[]
The two met each other during the killing game and interact for the first time during the Six-Legged Pentathlon game when players are tasked to make up teams of 5. Thanos, with Nam-gyu and Gyeong-su, come up to Se-mi and he introduces himself to her. At first, Nam-gyu is trying to convince Thanos to not pick her, as he doesn't think they should have a girl on their team. However, Thanos doesn't budge and continues to talk to her. After they all sat down, Nam-gyu and Se-mi start talking to each other back and forth after Se-mi tells Min-su to not listen to him.
After Six-Legged Pentathlon, the five get down to sit together. Nam-gyu asks Min-su to count how many rodents, referring to the players, are left in the game. As he gets up to do what he was asked for, Se-mi doesn't let him and says that's a stupid idea. Nam-gyu asks her to shut up, which prompts Thanos to tell them to stop and steps into the conversation by asking Min-su when he was born. After finding out when everyone else was born, he tells Nam-gyu to respect Se-mi, as by her words she's the oldest of the group. Nam-gyu awkwardly laughs it off.
In Mingle, the two were together when they needed 4 players. Then they were seperated after Min-su betrayed Se-mi by playing scissors to her outstretched hand resembling a paper, after they were told to play Rock, Papers, Scissors. This results in Se-mi being alone. After Mingle, they vote for opposite outcomes, Nam-gyu votes for "O" to continue the games and Se-mi votes to stop them, "X".
During the Special Game, Nam-gyu corners Se-mi against a wall with a fork in his hands ready to kill her. Min-su from the top of his bed, drops a bottle that he held onto that falls right besides Nam-gyu, which makes him look at where it came from. Taking the chance, Se-mi takes a bottle shard and lunges at Nam-gyu. However, her attack fails and he ultimately kills her by stabbing a fork into her neck several times.
Moments[]
- When Nam-gyu lets go of his hold of Min-su during the third vote, he looks at Se-mi who's flipping him off, showing him the middle finger.
- While Nam-gyu was killing Se-mi, he starts asking her whether she wants to laugh at him more.
Quotes[]
- “Fuck you bitch”
- — Nam-gyu to Se-mi during Six-Legged Pentathlon
- “Shut up”
- — Nam-gyu to Se-mi after Six-Legged Pentathlon
Fanon[]
The two are a rarepair, as most fans believe they would be a toxic couple if they got together. Although, that is one of the main appeals to the ship because the Enemies to Lovers trope would be in play here. One of the main reasons as to why this is shipped is because fans think that Nam-gyu feels inferior to Se-mi considering the way he talks to her. Because of this, people assume it's plausible that he killed her due to his own insecurities. This makes fans think that Nam-gyu feels weak towards Se-mi, and that he tries to hide it by being rude and disrespectful towards her. Another aspect that people like of their relationship is the way Se-mi stands up to Nam-gyu when the other talks to Min-su, and how she isn't afraid to talk back to him.
Considering their short history of disdain towards each other when both were alive, especially from Nam-gyu, it's only natural that there would be fancontent made of the two together in a romantic sense. People like to imagine how funny it would be if Nam-gyu had a crush on Se-mi considering his dislike that he shows towards women, and especially towards Se-mi, during the show. In AU's where the Squid Games don't exist, the two are portrayed usually to be enemies at first who become neutral with each other and later get close with each other.
People that don't ship this, however, prefer to view the two as either frenemies or enemies in general. There is lots of fanart of the two on Twitter and plenty of edits for them on Tiktok. This ship is also rarepair due to both characters having more popular ships, Thangyu for Nam-gyu and Seminsu for Se-mi.
The ship currently has 5 works on AO3.
