Fanon[]

Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, is the main protagonist of Squid Game and is arguably the most popular character in the fandom. Although, some fans deem him to be underrated in his own show due to the popularity of other characters and how people overlook his traits. People enjoy his character for the caring nature he preserves throughout the games and love his protectiveness of others like Sae-byeok, as well as for how "human" he is despite his flaws. Another characteristic of his that people adore him for is him seeing the good in people, as it's seen as both his strongest and weakest trait considering the nature of the games he's put into. Since he doesn't like to give up on people or leave them by, he has trusted a player under the number 001 and has been betrayed twice, with him currently not knowing that "Young-il" is the Front Man. Another trait that people like to point out is his love for his family. Specifically, for his daughter and mom, as he fell into depression after his mother died and couldn't bare the idea of losing his daughter. Although, there are critiques of his character for not going on the plane to see his daughter and sacrificing a few players for the greater good, as people like to point out that due to his reckless nature he still remains a gambler. Despite all of this, he is still loved by many fans of the show and is seen as an example of a well-written character outside of it.

On Twitter and Tiktok, or in general, lots of statements are made about how "babygirl" Gi-hun is as they bring up scenes where he looks cute or, as deemed by fans, "submissive" and even "breedable". Fans thirst over him as he's deemed "pathetic" but also "hot" at the same with the release of Season 2 where he looks more serious compared to his previous version in Season 1. So, in most works for him with A/B/O or Omegaverse dynamics, he's usually portrayed as an Omega. People over on Twitter also love to joke about "mpreg" Gi-hun and various fanarts are made where he and In-ho, or any other character he's shipped with, have a child together. A popular ship that was born as a result of all the other ships like 457, Sangihun and SalesHun was Gihun's Harem, which usually includes the other ships mentioned with 4-5 suitors.

His most popular scene is obviously the one during the second game, dubbed as the "The Dalgona Scene" or also as "No wonder/doubt why In-ho/Front Man cancelled Dalgona". Lots of jokes and memes are made about it because the camera focuses a lot on a particular part of his body, accompanied by interesting sounds when he starts licking the Dalgona. Fans of a particular ship also love to make edited videos where In-ho is watching Gi-hun lick the candy. However, people also like to mention that his strategy of licking the candy actually shows how smart he is because even the creator of the games Il-nam uses the same tactic later, even if he was confused by it at first. Other jokes of the scene include people wanting to do certain things to Gi-hun, people wondering why is he arching like that when compared to other players sitting, as well as wondering how the guards didn't "fold" when seeing him in the pose like that.

Other popular scenes of him include, when his nose started bleeding because he got hit by the loan sharks. This scene is the reason people started calling him "pathetic", as in their words he looked and was acting as such. When he fights Sang-woo, specifically after he hits his him with sand to his face and starts walking to the other side, as this scene might've been the reason people started thirsting over him because one could describe him as "hot" in it. People also like to point out that him using sand to hit Sang-woo's face was very smart and again, is a sign of his intelligence. Another scene that people like of him is when he and Sang-woo are arguing over the death of Player 017, as people enjoy the way he stood up for himself and argued against Sang-woo's thinking.

In terms of shipping he's a very popular character when it comes to the topic, as he has at least 2 ships which are in the top 5 most written ships for Squid Game on AO3. The reasons why may include that he has a lot of interactions and interesting dynamics when it comes to other characters. As well as, he is the main protagonist of the show and it's only natural that he would be shipped not only with people closest to him, such as his childhood best friend or other allies, but also with the antagonists of the show like the Front Man or The Salesman/The Recruiter.

His most popular ships include, but are not limited to:

Hwang In-ho

Cho Sang-woo

Hwang Jun-ho

The Salesman/The Recruiter
