Severus Snape is a character from the Harry Potter fandom.
Character[]
Snape attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Slytherin House. During his time at school, he developed a deep interest in the Dark Arts and was also talented in Potions. He was often bullied by James Potter and his friends, which fueled his resentment towards James and, later, his son Harry.
Snape initially joined the Death Eaters, a group of dark wizards and witches led by Lord Voldemort. However, after Voldemort targets Lily Potter, Snape's childhood friend and unrequited love, he defects and becomes a double agent. He works as a spy for Albus Dumbledore within Voldemort’s ranks while maintaining the appearance of being loyal to the Dark Lord.
Snape serves as the Potions Master at Hogwarts for most of the series, and later, he becomes the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. In the final book, he is appointed as Hogwarts Headmaster by Voldemort.
He is generally portrayed as a stern, sarcastic, and often cold character. He has a dry, biting wit and is known for his strict discipline. Despite his apparent coldness, Snape is shown to be deeply passionate, particularly in his loyalties and in his feelings toward certain people.

Fanon[]
Due to his morally ambiguous role in the books, fans have mixed and polarized opinions about Severus Snape. Some fans like him for his loyalty, bravery and wit. Others dislike him because of his bullying and cruelty, obsession with Lily Evans and lack of character growth.
The "Always" scene, where Snape reveals that his Patronus is a doe (the same as Lily's), and his use of the word "Always" to signify his enduring love, has become one of the most iconic and quoted moments in the series.
