Theatre of Lies[]
The story opens with the first encounter between Pure Vanilla Cookie and Shadow Milk Cookie, where Shadow Milk Cookie takes on the guise of the Light of Truth to mislead Pure Vanilla Cookie into The Other Realm. As he continues to impersonate the Light of Truth, Shadow Milk Cookie confesses to have been spying on Pure Vanilla Cookie for possibly his entire life. Shadow Milk Cookie proceeds to reveal his true identity, insisting that Pure Vanilla Cookie's soul jam was rightfully his instead.
Taken aback, Pure Vanilla Cookie explains that Shadow Milk Cookie had reduced the power of knowledge into Deceit, which resulted in the witches capturing his power and imprisoning him. Shadow Milk Cookie then directs his rage at Pure Vanilla Cookie, simultaneously revealing his disdain for the witches as well.
As the story progresses, Shadow Milk Cookie summons a stage which blocks the path and forces everyone to watch his show. Meanwhile, Pure Vanilla Cookie experiences a mix of confusion and worry due to Shadow Milk Cookie's previous statements in The Other Realm. Pure Vanilla Cookie acknowledges that their powers are "two sides of the same coin," which fills him with unease.
After the downfall of Elder Faerie Cookie and the destruction of the Faerie Kingdom, Shadow Milk Cookie once again disguises himself as the Light of Truth. He infiltrates Pure Vanilla Cookie's mind and urges him to destroy the Silver Tree, even if it means using his bare hands. This leaves Pure Vanilla Cookie stressed as he struggles against these intrusive thoughts.
Shadow Milk Cookie carries on with his mocking performance and twists it into a one-sided quiz with deadly consequences for wrong answers. However, Pure Vanilla Cookie answers both questions correctly in Shadow Milk Cookie's eyes. Shadow Milk Cookie briefly praises him for this and admits to being "impressed."
Following the defeat of Shadow Milk Cookie, Pure Vanilla Cookie shares his concerns with White Lily Cookie, expressing that there is often a grain of truth within Shadow Milk Cookie's words. He regards these words as a cautionary message and admits that he considers Shadow Milk Cookie to be a more dangerous foe than Dark Enchantress Cookie.

Spire of Shadows[]
After arriving at the Spire of All Knowledge, Pure Vanilla Cookie falls asleep and is taken to The Other Realm. Mistaking Shadow Milk Cookie for the Light of Truth, Pure Vanilla Cookie admits that he has been experiencing troubling dreams since leaving the Faerie Kingdom. As Shadow Milk Cookie begins to speak to make him question the reality of these dreams, Pure Vanilla Cookie recognizes that this is not how the Light of Truth typically acts. Shadow Milk Cookie continues and suggests they share more similarities than he thinks.
When waking up, Pure Vanilla Cookie is stressed. While wandering through the spire, he thinks back to the so-called Light of Truth he encountered and tries convincing himself that Shadow Milk Cookie is not the same as him. Suddenly, Shadow Milk Cookie takes over his thoughts and words, stating that in the end, everything leads to him. Pure Vanilla Cookie panics and realizes these thoughts are not his own. The pond's reflection shifts from Pure Vanilla Cookie to Shadow Milk Cookie, who comments on how they are "bound" together.
Later on, a flashback cutscene opens, showing when Pure Vanilla Cookie discovered Shadow Milk Cookie's past identity as the "Fount of All Knowledge." He notes that there were cookies who rejected reality and chose deceit over the truth; he also sympathetically comments on how Shadow Milk Cookie must've walked a "solitary path" because of this.
Pure Vanilla Cookie is then taken to The Other Realm, where Shadow Milk Cookie shows his true form, not the Light of Truth he earlier disguised himself as. Shadow Milk Cookie mocks him with the altered memories he had created and states that they are like "two sides of the same coin," something Pure Vanilla previously acknowledged. Calling Pure Vanilla Cookie his "most cherished marionette," he insists he is following in his footsteps and will inevitably become him.
Pure Vanilla Cookie continues trying to fight back against these thoughts, refusing to believe they have any similarities. He is then taken into yet another dream, this time set in a war zone where he cannot use his healing powers since Shadow Milk Cookie is tied to him and will sense its use. However, Shadow Milk Cookie manages to find Pure Vanilla Cookie and calls him his "long lost other half."
The dream shifts and Pure Vanilla Cookie looks into his reflection and sees that he has become Shadow Milk Cookie. Distressed, he tries convincing himself that he is Pure Vanilla Cookie, not Shadow Milk Cookie. This ultimately leads to his fall and corruption as the Truthless Recluse.
Beacon of Truth[]

In Episode 8, Pure Vanilla Cookie has descended to his corrupted form, Truthless Recluse. Shadow Milk Cookie is shown taunting him, while Truthless Recluse maintains an aloof demeanor. The dialogue then transitions to a cutscene depicting Shadow Milk Cookie grabbing Truthless Recluse with a crazed grin. Shadow Milk Cookie rants about how his soul jam is not truly his, taunting him about how the Light of Truth has grown dimmer.
Once claiming the soul jam, Shadow Milk Cookie comments how it is not how he remembered it, now "tarnished and unstable." He acknowledges that it represents the current state of Pure Vanilla Cookie's soul, and wonders how low he can make him fall.
Afterwards, Truthless Recluse is forced to participate in a game, where he must stay afloat in the River of Rebirth. The only way to stay afloat is to embrace deceit. Truthless Recluse hesitantly enters the river, however, he doesn't float. Shadow Milk Cookie realizes that he overestimated the degree of the soul jam's instability earlier, and how Truthless Recluse refuses to let go of the truth.
However, Truthless Recluse suddenly stands on top of the waters, seemingly embracing deceit. Shadow Milk Cookie becomes excited and creates more trials for Truthless Recluse, testing if has really abandoned the truth.
Shadow Milk Cookie forces Truthless Recluse to participate in another trial, a chess game where it is forbidden to lie. Once landing the coin to determine who will be the black or white chess pieces, Truthless Recluse originally gets white, but Shadow Milk Cookie switches the determined colors, saying how they are "two peas in a pod," and how it's hard to tell them apart.
In this game, Shadow Milk Cookie asks Truthless Recluse sensitive, provoking questions, in which Truthless Recluse has to answer what Shadow Milk Cookie deems truthful. Truthless Recluse continues "lying," and Shadow Milk Cookie senses his worry, noting how the soul jam is reacting now that his friends are at stake.
Shadow Milk Cookie insists that if the truth was the only right thing, then it would've granted Truthless Recluse the power to overcome the odds he's been against. Truthless Recluse hesitantly accepts this, while Shadow Milk Cookie concludes that he is “his truth.”
Once Shadow Milk Cookie asks him if he regrets everything in his life, where Truthless Recluse's answer is the fate of his friends in the chess game. Truthless Recluse twists his question around, saying that if he is a Cookie of Deceit now, then “tricks should be no harder than flipping a coin,” and that rules can be broken. This causes his team to checkmate and win.
Shadow Milk Cookie, however, is very amused and impressed by this. He admits how he expected Truthless Recluse to beg for mercy, but did the exact opposite. Shadow Milk Cookie calls him an “exemplary student” and comments how he wants to keep playing with his “new favorite toy,” Truthless Recluse.

After the release of Episode 8, Beacon of Truth, the controversial ship quickly gained popularity in the fandom due to Pure Vanilla Cookie's attempt at befriending Shadow Milk Cookie, and his reaction. Furthermore, their interactions when Pure Vanilla Cookie temporarily descended into his corrupted form, Truthless Recluse, contributed to the popularity.
There are multiple interpretations of ShadowVanilla shippers gravitate to depending on their preferences, including ShadowRecluse, TruthlessSage, and VanillaSage. The most popular version, however, is the original. ShadowVanilla is shipped due to their contrasting personalities and roles, as well as their potential in fanfics. Additionally, due to them being connected through their soul jams, people consider the two to be "soulmates."
There are currently around 1100 ShadowVanilla works on AO3, making it the second most written ship in the Cookie Run tag.
Theories & Headcanons[]
Shadow Milk Cookie's design shares many similarities to the Blueberry Yogurt Academy. Fans often theorize that he was the academy's first headmaster, based on the similarities between the headmaster's brief appearance and Shadow Milk Cookie's pre-corruption form. This would create an interesting relationship between the two, as Pure Vanilla Cookie studied in the academy in the past.
