Shadowblink is the slash ship between Shieda Kayn and Ezreal from the League of Legends fandom.
Canon[]
Kayn and Ezreal have never actually met in the canon lore of Runeterra, since the two of them are from different regions (Kayn being from Ionia and Ezreal being from Piltover). However, in alternate universe skin lines such as HEARTSTEEL, there are some notable interactions between the two.
HEARTSTEEL[]
In this universe, Ezreal and Kayn are part of a band called HEARTSTEEL, alongside Sett, Yone, K’sante, and Aphelios. Since its release as a skin line, the pairing has gotten a lot of attention due to their interactions and social media posts made by official Riot accounts.
The concept of the band is that it’s made up of the six characters who all had failed musical solo careers, and decided to form a band together to get back up on their feet. Ezreal was a one hit wonder who left his label after he failed to release an album, and Kayn was kicked out of his previous band and earned quite a bad reputation due to the incident.
Kayn’s opinion of Ezreal in this AU is made apparent by the way he interacts with the latter. He’s often teasing Ezreal by calling him things like “Little popstar prince” and spitting out a snarky “Make me” after a flustered Ezreal tells him to shut up. [1]
Fanon[]
The ship started as a fairly unpopular crack ship in the League fandom, but with the release of HEARTSTEEL, it evolved into something a lot bigger.
The main appeal of the pairing is their dynamic in the HEARTSTEEL universe. Kayn’s edgy rock star persona and Ezreal’s perfect pop prince image provide a good contrast between the two characters, which translates into good chemistry.
The band skin line comes with three icons with two characters and a description. Kayn and Ezreal share one with the description reading “Is banter a love language?”[2], which only gathered more attention around their dynamic. Additionally, in one of the discord calls between the members posted by the official Riot account, Kayn says, “Good thing they didn’t remember the posters in my room”[3] in response to Sett mentioning the Ezreal posters in Aphelios’ room, which alludes to him secretly being a fan of Ezreal.
They’re also shown to be quite close in the few videos put out by Riot relating to HEARTSTEEL. In the PARANOIA music video, they’re seen in the same ice cream truck, with Kayn driving and Ezreal in the passenger’s seat. In concept art from the video, Ezreal is shown screaming with his arm wrapped around Kayn while the latter has one hand on the steering wheel.
In the bloopers video, Ezreal is seen begging Aphelios to play rock paper scissors with him so he doesn’t have to ride on the truck with Kayn, since the rapper shows little to no regard for traffic safety. There’s also a shot with them playing around, with Ezreal sitting on Kayn’s shoulder to appear taller than K’Sante, falling off shortly after.
It’s believed that they would have a similar dynamic in the canon Runeterra universe, dialed up to 100. Their personalities are very similar, both of them are overconfident self-assured prodigies who are good at multiple things. Many people see their first meeting as Ezreal arriving in Ionia and being immediately ambushed by Kayn, engaging in a thrilling battle full of snarky remarks thrown at each other.
