Shadwell x Tracy is the het ship between Sergeant Shadwell and Madame Tracy from the Good Omens fandom.

Canon[]

Shadwell was a "Witchfinder General", who had to do most of his operations from his flat/apartment in his own apartment, opposite of a woman who calls herself "Madame Tracy", who works as a medium. Due to her describing her profession as being "intimately relaxing", he is under the impression that Madame Tracy is a sex worker. Having grown up in conservative times, he has a distaste against anything he considers odd and thus verbally attacked Madame Tracy sometimes, calling her "Jezebel". He does accept her making dinner for him, however. Madame Tracy often treats the floor they both live on as a single apartment and often walks in on Shadwell's operations, answering his phone as if she were his secretary, only to be chased away by him.

Madame Tracy witnesses Shadwell recruiting Newton Pulsifer into the Witchfinder's Army, being nice to the kid and telling him things about Shadwell, only for him to tell her to shut up. When Shadwell worries about Newt after having sent him to Tadfield under Aziraphale's tip that the Antichrist lives there, Madame Tracy reassures him that Newt will be fine. After Shadwell investigates the situation, trying to talk to Aziraphale only to witness him talking to Metatron, ironically believing that Aziraphale is a demon and that he somehow banished him by pointing at him, he tries to tell Madame Tracy about it, only for her to understandably assume that he's crazy and allowing him to sleep in her room. Though he didn't appreciate the amount of brightly colored and the few "spicier" additions to the decor, he slept like a rock and thus missed a decoporated Aziraphale interrupting Madame Tracy's latest séance by accidentally possessing her and driving her guests away. When Shadwell woke up, Aziraphale already had Madame Tracy caught up by chatting with her through her mirror while she was drinking a cup of tea with him (literally). When Shadwell hears the voice of a man coming out of Madame Tracy's living room, he assumes that she has a lover, only to recognize the voice and telling the "demon" to leave the "whore" alone. After much trying, both Aziraphale and Madame Tracy manage to calm Shadwell down (by taking turns speaking), and Madame Tracy tells him that whatever Aziraphale is talking about is very urgent. So the three (two?) of them make a plan to drive to Tadfield and confront the Antichrist themselves. When Shadwell objects that he can't drive on Madame Tracy's motorcycle without a helmet, she pulls one out and admits that she always kept it just in case.

When they drive to Tadfield on Madame Tracy's motorcycle, Shadwell is holding onto her tightly. At the airbase, Crowley and Aziraphale (still in Madame Tracy's body) reunite while Shadwell is watching. They then decide to confront the Antichrist together, but stop as they witness the Antichrist Adam Young and friends confront the Four Horsepeople of the Apocalypse themselves. Adam uses his powers to separate Madame Tracy and Aziraphale again, meaning that they can finally go their own ways after the aversion of the Apocalypse and they do, with Shadwell and Madame Tracy going home together. The next day, the first day of the rest of their lives, Shadwell and Madame Tracy are eating dinner together and Shadwell pops the question: How many nipples does she have? Madame Tracy replies with a slightly confused "just the two" and Shadwell is very relieved. Though he gave up being a Witchfinder General for her, officially going into retirement after entering a relationship with her.

Fanon[]

The ship is the fifth (not counting duplicates) most popular ship in the "Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett" tag on AO3, the seventh most popular ship in the "Good Omens (TV)" tag and the most popular ship for both characters. However, it didn't go without its controversies. Mainly while people do like Madame Tracy, finding her to be a funny and likable character, they are more divided on Shadwell, as many of his stances and quips are seen as making him somewhat unsympathetic. Neil Gaiman agreed that a few of Shadwell's lines from the book did not age well at all, thus removed them the series while keeping Shadwell's character mostly the same, but people still have a difficult time warming up to him. It directly affects how people see the relationship, as while Ineffable Descendants had problems about the speed of the relationship's development, people found it hard to believe that Shadwell would enter a relationship with Madame Tracy after a week of "not really hating her".

Ultimately, like every Good Omens ship to not include Aziraphale or Crowley, it mainly exists as a nice side-ship for Ineffable Husbands, helped by its canon status. However, there are very few solo fics for the pairing.
