When Shikamaru became Naruto's advisor, fans were even more pleased, even though both were married to Temari and Hinata by that point.

ShikaNaru is the slash ship between Naruto Uzumaki and Shikamaru Nara from the Naruto fandom.

Canon

Naruto and Shikamaru know each other from attending the Ninja Academy together. They had the two lowest grades in their class and often got yelled at by Iruka because of this. However, the entire class often got punished for Naruto's misdeeds which irritated Shikamaru. Naruto also was not a fan of Shikamaru before the Chunin Exams. However, their friendship would eventually grow.

During the second round of the Chunin Exams, Shikamaru helped Ino protect Sakura who was protecting Naruto along with Sasuke. Between the second and third rounds, Naruto spent some time in the hospital. When he woke up, Shikamaru was in his room visiting him. They later confronted Gaara together who was attempting to murder Rock Lee. When Konoha was under attack, Naruto and Shikamaru went on a mission along with Sakura to stop Gaara.

After Shikamaru was promoted to Chunin, Sasuke left the village so he was placed in charge of a mission to retrieve him. Per Tsunade's recommendation, he placed Naruto on his team. Shikamaru was determined to bring him back and stayed behind to fight Tayuya so that Naruto could go ahead and catch up to Sasuke. In the end, they failed to stop him and Shikamaru felt guilty over his failure.

Naruto left the village for over two years to train before finally returning. Shikamaru was surprised to see how much he had grown but pointed out the fact that Naruto was the only one among his age group who was still a Genin. After Jiraiya was killed, Naruto went into a huge depression. Shikamaru was able to sympathize with him due to losing Asuma and it was the revealed that the two had become good friends.
