Sometime after Yuri lost her whole family to a fire as a child and was wondering about the streets, she comes across Shiro's hideout where Yuri's hunger gets her to ate his snacks before falling asleep on his bed. When Shiro found Yuri in his hideout he coldly wanted her gone and had threatened to kill the young girl, Yuri apologies for entering his home without permission before explaining that she has no family or home of her own to return to, and didn't want to go back into the cold snow.

Anime

The second part of the 2011 anime doesn't fully follow through with original manga, along with the anime's version of Shiro and Yuri's brief backstory, involving the birth of the twins, airing long before the manga revels it.

Both Shiro and Yuri are exorcists that know each other quite well from the Vatican, where Shiro serves under (the anime version of) Yuri's father, Ernst Frederik Egin. Shiro doesn't agree with Yuri being open-minded when it comes to demons, as funning over demons isn't something that exorcists like them should do. A year and a half after Yuri cut ties with the Vatican and began to live in the forest with demons, as the "White Witch of the Forest", Shiro was sent by Ernst to bring her back and to make sure that she is free for the "spell" that they believed that the demons placed upon her. Shiro had at first tried to bring Yuri back from reasoning, along with reminding her why she cannot become close with demons, but Yuri wouldn't have it and clamed that their exorcist idles are the main reason why humans and demons are countably fighting against one another. Which is why she won't go back with him and will stay in the forest with her demon friends. After reporting back to Ernst and was given permission to take whatever methods to free Yuri from the demons she calls her friends.

As Shiro tried to kill the demons he saw Yuri with, she tries to stop him from doing so but Shiro wasn't having any of it, since he believes that she is under their control. With the anger building up within Yuri, the demon possessing her body, Satan, coated Yuri in his blue colored flames which shocks Shiro. Sometime later Yuri wakes up to find Shiro sitting next to her on the bed and noticed from his half damaged attire that could be due to her blanked out state from when Satan took over her body, and possibly attacked the exorcist before Shiro exorcised Satan out of her. Shiro asks Yuri how long Satan had possessed her and was shocked to learn that she left the God of Demons do so willingly, before she tells Shiro that she is pregnant with Satan's child.

When new of Yuri's pregnancy reached the Vatican, after Shiro brought her back, they had assumed that Shiro is the father of Yuri's baby and locked him up for it, despite Shiro's clams of it being Satan's and not his, until Yuri confirmed it herself and that she is planning to keep and raise Satan's spawn. After Yuri was sentenced to death as a witch, but had manged to escape with Satan's help, Shiro was tasked to find and kill Yuri, as well as Satan's child, with Mephisto accompanying him. Shiro knew that Yuri would have returned to the forest she called her home and by the time he finds her, Yuri had just given birth to her twin sons she calls Rin and Yukio, and was happy to see Shiro before she passes away. Shiro begged Yuri to not dye and to stay alive, but she was already gone and Mephisto reminds Shiro that he still has a task to for fill, but after Yuri's new born elder son smiled at him Shiro remembers Yuri's words about humans and demons and decides to raise Yuri's children as his own; and to make sure that they grow up as humans and not demons.

Yuri's grave, that Rin and Yukio found many years later as teenagers long after Shiro dies, is believed to have been done by Shiro after Mephisto left him with the new born boys and their deceased mother. Rin and Yukio talk about how both Shiro and Yuri were greets parents as they were theirs.

Long before the story of how Shiro ended up raising Yuri's twin sons was revealed in the original manga, the anime releases its own version of their story which inspires fans to support their relationship, as well as some having the two raise Rin and Yukio together, one way or another, in their fanfics and fanart. The ship's support grew after the manga finally reveals its version of their story, of how they met one another to the moment when Shiro became the adoptive father of Yuri's sons. Along with fans rivaling the ship between Shiro x Yuri with SataYuri.
