ShuAnn is the het ship between Joker/Akira Kurusu/Ren Amamiya and Ann Takamaki from the Persona fandom.
Canon[]
On 4/11, Ann and Ren meet by 'chance' when Ren takes refuge from the rain, beneath the canopy entrance of Jeunesse et Beaute. In Persona 5, a soundtrack called 'Encounter' plays during their first meet where they lock gazes. This romantic OST is not repeated later in the game.
On 4/14, Ren overhears Ann in a distressful phone call with Suguru Kamoshida, a teacher from their school who has been making unwanted & harassing advances on Ann. On being discovered, Ann is on the brink of tears and wants to be alone. She tries to run away from Ren, who catches up to her and prompts to console Ann in a nearby diner. Ann pours her miseries out to Ren, having bottled up her problems and frustrations which even her best friend did not know about.
The following day, Ann implicates herself in Ren's picaresque thieveries in an alternate realm called the metaverse, where she acquires the ability to wield her own Persona - the femme fatale of French opera, Carmen.
When Ren first introduces Ann to his legal guardian, Sojiro Sakura; the older gentleman makes a point to ask Ann if she has a boyfriend, strongly hinting that Sojiro wonders or suspects of a possible romance with the boy in his charge.
Within the entire female cast, Ann is the one who was chosen to be Ren's classmate and sit in front of him. When Ann is in trouble in class Ren can help her which makes him gain affinity points with her at the same time as charm points, the reason why Ren does not gain Knowledge points but only charm points is because he is being a Kindness boy with Ann since no one else can notice that Ren is helping her.
When exploring Mementos, Ann mentions in one of her lines that coffee goes well with sweets (Ann is a self-confessed sweet tooth), to which a mutual friend - Ryuji, quips that Ren smells like coffee.
In the game we can accompany the characters to see a movie at the cinema, Ann is the only girl with whom we are going to see a romantic movie called "Love Possibly" It's a story about a man who struggles to tell the woman he loves how he truly feels. After finishing watching the movie, Ren thinks "I feel like I was able to learn about love..." When leaving the movie theater Ann comments "I guess girls like me want that perfect, romantic kind of love you see in the movies."
On July 18, when we go to the fireworks festival, a group of girls try to convince us to accompany them, Ryuji plans to go excitedly without waiting for Ann and Makoto, but Ren's three available responses are negative. During the festival, the rain soaks the protagonists and Ann squeezes the water out of her yukata, exposing her legs. In this scene, we can see that Ren was looking at Ann's legs without being able to hide it well enough. Showing that Ren is canonically attracted to Ann.
On July 25 when the group drives through the desert inside the heart of Futaba, similar to the previous case there is a scene where Ann has sweated her blouse and her bra is slightly visible, at that moment we can see that Ren is interested in seeing Ann's breasts.
(We must remember that Ren is a teenager and it is normal for him to be attracted and tempted by the body of the girl he likes, but unlike Ryuji who only finds Ann's body attractive, but not her personality, Ren is attracted to both, her body and personality).
During the Hawaii field trip, Ann finds herself locked out of her hotel room because her roommate had her boyfriend over. Ann ends up deciding to come over to Ren's hotel room to take refuge, despite the implication that she could have chosen one of her other friends' rooms, Makoto, Ryuji and Yusuke. On this night, Ann passes off an indiscreet question to the guys, asking what kind of girl is their type. This happens even if you have chosen the friendship route with Ann.
When Ann, Ren and Ryuji are in the same room there is a conversation where Ann will directly ask Ren what girl his type is (showing interest in the answer) the game allows us to answer 4 alternatives, but the first of these refers to Ann, Following this, she is asked the same thing, but her answer is interrupted by Mishima.
While wandering the red light district in Shinjuku, Ren chances on a billboard advertising burlesque performers in a deviltry costume. To which Ren's companion cat Morgana remarks, "If you want a little devil, don't you already have Lady Ann?" - irrespective if shujinkō is romancing Ann or another girl.
Towards the end of Ann's romantic confidante, Ren professes that he wants to get married one day - which makes Ann blush. Also in Ann's romantic confidante; on Ren's final day in Tokyo when he comes to visit Ann in Shibuya's underground mall, Ann says to him, "I'm going to be a proper lady someday. . .Just for you."
In the original version of Persona 5, on Christmas Day, when the Phantom Thieves gather to find out that Ren turned himself into the police to help prosecute Masayoshi Shido, Ann is the first person in the room to say that she can't accept the idea of him being imprisoned, and she's the one who suggests the team should try to prove his innocence. This is, however, removed in Royal edition, where the same line is instead given to a different character. Also, in the anime cut-scene of Ren coming back to Leblanc after being released, Ann is the last to react to seeing him again. In the English dub, she greets him by saying "Hey there!" But in the original Japanese, what she said was, "Welcome home," which is associated in Japanese culture as a greeting reserved for dating or married couples. This greeting happens regardless of who the player chose to date, but suggests a romantic closeness with Ann specifically. This is, however, also removed from Royal edition, as the cut-scene of Ren going into the shop is cut right before he enters.
Fanon[]
The name of the ship came from combining Ann and Shujinkō, a Japanese term for hero/main character/protagonist. During 2019, a ShuAnn Week was held from the 1st of July - to the 7th. On AO3, there are 457 submitted ShuAnn fan fictions as of 24th June, 2020.
