Pocahontas[]

After John Smith lands in the New World, he takes to exploring the land. While he is doing so he's is unknowingly being followed by Pocahontas along with her animal friends, Meeko and Flit.

Smith eventually comes to a lake and waterfall, stopping to wash his face. As he brings the water to his face he notices a reflection and looks behind him, seeing nothing. Pocahontas, being the person in the reflection, is now hiding behind a rock. Growing suspicious, John hides behind the waterfall, gun in hand, while Pocahontas makes her way down to the water. As she makes her way across the water, John jumps out and prepares to shoot but is stunned when he sees Pocahontas, putting the gun down and slowly rising in an attempt not to startle her. As he makes his way towards her, Pocahontas runs off and Smith gives chase, stopping her from leaving in a boat. John tries to explain that he won't hurt her, but they doesn't understand each other at first. However, after taking his hand, a connection is formed that allows them to understand each other. The two give their names, and talk for some time.

John unintentionally insults her, though, by talking about how his people have improved the lives of "savages" everywhere, with things like decent roads and houses. He tries to apologize, and Pocahontas responds by showing him the beauty of nature and John accepts it. However, their time together is cut short when Pocahontas hears the sound of drums and the two return to their camps.

The next time the see each other, Pocahontas and Nakoma are picking in a corn field when John shows up unexpectedly. Nakoma is worried at first, but then becomes surprised when she learns that Pocahontas and John Smith have met before and are on friendly terms. As Kokoum calls for Pocahontas, she makes Nakoma promise to not say anything and then disappears with John to meet Grandmother Willow. Nakoma keeps her promise for now.

Grandmother Willow reveals herself to John, who is slightly freaked out. Pocahontas encourages him to talk and Grandmother Willow notes that he is a good person (and handsome too). Several settlers come looking for John and although they are scared off, John returns to his camp; making Pocahontas promise to meet him at this same spot later that night.

Pocahontas sneaks out again, putting Nakoma on edge and she decides to send Kocoum after her. John also sneaks out, with Thomas and Ratcliff noticing him leaving. Thomas is told to follow him and shoot any Indians he sees.

Pocahontas and John Smith meet back with Grandmother Willow and the three discuss the nature of their relationship and the relationship between the natives and the settlers. John decides to try and talk with Pocahontas' father and the two embrace before kissing. Both Thomas and Kocoum witness this, with Kocoum deciding to attack John. The two fight against each other, with Pocahontas trying to stop them to no avail. As Kocoum pulls a knife, Thomas rushes out loading his gun and Pocahontas rushes to John's defense, helping him push the knife away from him. Thomas shoots, killing Kocoum instantly to everyone's shock. Pocahontas becomes angry and John tells Thomas to run, taking the blame for Kocoum's death as he is captured and sentenced to die the next morning.

Upon returning to camp, Pocahontas meets with John as he is tied up and the pair briefly reflect on their meeting and time together before Pocahontas leaves. John kisses her hand and makes peace with his fate. Meanwhile Pocahontas runs back to Grandmother Willow, unsure of what to do as both groups prepare for war. Meeko brings her John's compass and she recognizes it as the spinning arrow from her dreams. It points back to John and the tribe, and Pocahontas sets off to stop the execution before it's too late.

As Chief Powhatan brings down the cudgel to kill Smith, Pocahontas arrives and throws herself over him, preventing the execution. She refuses to leave him, proclaiming her love for John and stating that if he dies, she'll die too. She asks her father to reconsider his actions. He does and orders John to be released, who embraces Pocahontas as soon as his hands are free. The natives and settlers stand down except for Ratcliff, who believes it to be a ruse. The settlers refuse, making Ratcliff grab a gun and fire on the chief. John realizes his plan and throws himself in front of the chief, getting shot in his place.

Shocked, the settlers round on Ratcliff, detaining him while Pocahontas and her father lean over John. John is taken back to the shore, temporarily bandaged until he can get back to England for treatment. He refuses to board until Pocahontas shows up, as she promised she would. When she does, many of the tribe accompany her with food and she gives John some bark to help his pain. Her father gives John his cloak and thanks him for his actions, welcoming him to the tribe should he ever return. John asks her to come with him but she ultimately refuses as her people need her. John then decides he'll stay but Pocahontas also refuses this, as he needs proper care to survive. The two share one last kiss and John is carried back to the ship.

As the ship leaves, Pocahontas runs to a cliff to watch it depart, and although neither can see the other, both her and John sign a final goodbye to each other.

Fanon[]

Despite the historical inaccuracy of the Pocahontas movie, many fans began shipping Pocahontas and John Smith together. Fans of the ship commonly agree that the second film, Pocahontas II, never happened due to the vilifying of Smith and ensuing romance with John Rolfe in order to make the film more historically accurate. Fans who prefer to ship Pocahontas and John Smith are known as Team Smith, since both love interests have the same first name.

On AO3, Smithontas is the most written ship for both John Smith and Pocahontas. It is also the most written ship in the Pocahontas (Disney 1995) tag.
