Smoking Pearl is the femslash ship between Pearl and Ashley from the Starlight Express fandom.

Bochum 2013-2017[]
Rusty is told to bring out the coaches, which include Ashley and Pearl. Ashley is thrown about while Pearl holds onto him until Rusty leaves to get the freight train. Ashley is against Rusty being in the race, stating that he needs to have strength and speed. Pearl defends that Rusty has those things, but none of the coaches agree with her. Ashley thinks that Pearl is a fool to go with him, and Pearl asks if she should tell him no. Ashley says that Pearl should feel more from her partner and Pearl agrees with her. Control then interrupts the coaches and tell them to introduce themselves.
Dinah then leads the coaches in doing so, Ashley and Pearl next to each other as they explain who they are. The two then dance next to each other as they explain what they're looking for in potential racing partners, as well as for romantic reasons. Pearl then steps forward, revealing that she likes a steam train, with Ashley joining Dinah and Buffy in commenting that everyone is looking for a dream train. The two then join Dinah and Buffy in making fun of the freight trucks when they arrive.

Smoking Pearl is a rarepair in the StEx fandom. Mostly due to a potential ship being overshadowed by more popular canon and fanon ships. Ashley has also been cut from most productions since 2018, making it hard for modern fandom to find interest in her character, or ship her with characters that are still in the show. Pearl and Ashley also don't have any one on one interactions in the show. Meaning some don't find their relationship all that deep. Both are characters that are considered rather controversial. As Ashley being cut has caused a stir, but is countered that her being a smoking car would be problematic given the modern knowledge of smokings effects on people. Pearl on the other hand is considered a controversial character, as many fans are often critical of her decisions in the show. Its rival ships include Prusty and Smoked Hot Dogs.
