Smoking Rust is the het ship between Rusty and Ashley from the Starlight Express fandom.

Rusty pulls out the coaches, Ashley, Buffy, Dinah and Pearl, as he believes he'll win the race. Ashley Buffy and Dinah tell him that he can't be serious about going in for the race. Ashley says that he needs to be strong, which Rusty insists he is, but Buffy says it won't be for long.
Bochum 2013-2017[]
Rusty is told to get the coaches, and brings them down, including Ashley in the back. He has to move them around some more and grabs onto Ashley. She tells him to quit shoving as he pushes around her Buffy and Dinah. They're pushes away and Ashley comments how he's going to blow his top. Rusty then leaves and Ashley and the others can't take the idea of Rusty entering the race seriously. Ashley pointing out his lack of speed and strength, as well as telling Pearl that she'd be a fool to race with him.

Smoking Rust is a rarepair in the StEx fandom. Mostly due to the two having limited interactions in the show itself. As well as Ashley not having a very positive opinion of him. This leads some to believe that Ashley and Rusty may be exes as well. With her looking down on him so much due to having a past relationship. Some ship them due to both being associated with smoke. As Ashley is a smoking car and Rusty produces smoke as a steam engine. Meaning that Ashley wouldn't be bothered by the smoke that Rusty produces if they race together. Which could lead to a potential romance. Its rival ships include Prusty and Smoked Hot Dogs.
