Sonangle is the het ship between Sonic the Hedgehog and Tangle the Lemur from the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom.
Canon[]
Fallout![]
With Doctor Eggman's army stepping up their attacks on various settlements, Sonic has been running to them and helping in their defense. This took him to the currently under-attack Spiral Hill Village to assist. As he entered the village and destroyed some of the Badniks that already made it inside, he found Tangle fighting them on her own. Sonic made his presence known by destroying a Badnik that was about to shoot Tangle in the back while she was cheering for herself. The two continued to fight, even while introducing themselves to each other, only to find themselves surrounded. The two are saved by the timely arrival of Blaze.
After Sonic catches Blaze up on what's happening, they and Tangle resume fighting the Badniks. When a lull in the fighting occurs, Tangle reveals to Sonic and Blaze that the Badniks have been coming via a dropship stationed over the village. She also gives them a hand by launching the two up to it using her tail. With the added boost, Sonic and Blaze manage to destroy the dropship, but Tangle worries for Sonic's safety since he was caught in the ensuing blast. Her worry is assuaged when Sonic lands in front of her and Blaze, a little dazed but otherwise okay.
With the Badniks dealt with, Sonic formally introduces Tangle and Blaze to each other. Sonic then begins asking Blaze why she's away from home, which leads to him explaining to her (and Tangle, by proxy) about what happened to him during the war. As he does so, Tangle realizes that the increased Badnik attacks might be building up to something worse in the future. After Blaze vows to help with that "something worse", the two leave to assist in quelling the flames across the village while Sonic departs for the next settlement.
Battle for Angel Island[]
Sonic and Tangle reunite at the Resistance's headquarters after the former found out about the plans of Neo Metal Sonic from one of Eggman's abandoned bases - namely the captures of Angel Island and the Master Emerald. After hammering out a plan with everyone else present, the two boarded an airship and departed for Angel Island. Upon reaching the island, however, the ship is shot down by Metal's defenses. The two separate to do their parts of the plan: Sonic joins Knuckles in securing the Master Emerald while Tangle defends Tails while he "does something smart".
The two are forcibly reunited when Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow are captured and brought to the commandeered Eggman battleship Tangle is on by Neo Metal Sonic in his monstrous new form. The two work together with everyone else to distract Metal while Knuckles disconnects the Master Emerald until it shakes them off and causes them to fall, forcing Silver to use his psychic powers to catch everyone. By that point, Tails smashes the battleship into Metal as Knuckles finally disconnects the Master Emerald and glides it away back into it's pedestal. As everyone prepares to head home, Sonic finds Tangle talking to Whisper. When Sonic asks if they're ready to go home, Tangle says that all of the excitement she's experienced over the last few days have made it unlikely that she can ever be satisfied by a calm life. She then puts Whisper on the spot by asking about a joke the latter just made before Sonic arrived. Seeing Whisper's discomfort at the request, Sonic tells Tangle to give her space and apologizes to Whisper as he heads off to another part of the ship.
Infection[]
Energized after a recent adventure back home, Tangle arrives at Tails' workshop in order to tell Sonic and Tails about it. She's confused to find Sonic running on a giant hamster wheel while Tails is seemingly monitoring him. Sonic informs Tangle about the circumstances: he'd been infected by a virus that turns people into "Zombots" after an encounter with two thugs under the employ of Eggman - who had amnesia until he got his memories back, and he'd been working with Tails to understand the virus. Tangle is worried about this information, but Sonic points out he seemingly cured himself via his speed. With that fear over, Tangle tells him and Tails about her adventure.
After the story, Tangle asks Sonic and Tails what the next move is, prompting Tails to inform her about the plans for a new flying fortress to distribute the Metal Virus that Sonic and Amy found. Tangle tells them to call her when they find that fortress so that she can help stop the plan before it can begin. As Sonic and Tangle go in for a high-five, however, the former notices that he's still infected and quickly gets out of the way before he touches the latter. With this reveal, Sonic runs out to begin searching for the fortress, while Tangle tells Tails that he'll find a cure soon enough.
Tangle & Whisper[]
Back in Spiral Hill Village, Tangle is talking with her friend Jewel about how active she is now thanks to her constant adventures with Sonic and his friends. This is interrupted when Tangle finds "Sonic" being chased by Whisper. Confused why Sonic is being chased, Tangle manages to head him off and ask what's going on. "Sonic" - in truth Whisper's former teammate Mimic - tells her that Whisper is under mind control, causing her to find Whisper and try to "stop her". Whisper, however, informs Tangle of Mimic's deception and what he's actually doing.
The Last Minute[]
Sometime after she helped Whisper defeat Mimic, Tangle assisted with the increasingly desperate problem with the Metal Virus, only to find out that Spiral Hill was now a target of infection. Sonic - having arrived to help out in the evacuation - reunites with her outside of the Mineral Museum as she's fighting off Zombots. Sonic informs her about the plan to bottleneck the Zombots so the evacuation can be completed, prompting Tangle to give her idea on how to do it: Using her tail as a tripwire. Sonic immediately vetoes the idea because it will get her infected - due to Sonic's speed losing it's virus-fighting potency. Tangle, however, reveals an infected Jewel attacked her earlier and that she's already been infected.
This revelation causes Sonic to begin doubting himself about sparing the amnesic Eggman and his inability to protect any of his friends recently. Tangle snaps him out of this doubt, saying that he's not the reason Eggman has his memories back, that there is a shuttle full of civilians and friends that he's currently defending, and the he can find the solution because he's Sonic. Reinvigorated by Tangle's talk, Sonic picks up Tangle and runs her between the nearby lampposts so that Tangle can create that "tail tripwire". With the Zombots held for the moment, Tangle asks Sonic to apologize to everyone, especially Whisper, before tearfully hugging him as he makes his way back to the shuttle. Tangle manages to hold off the Zombots until the shuttle departs, but finally succumbs to the Metal Virus and becomes a Zombot not long after.
Out of the Blue[]
Tangle was eventually cured of the Metal Virus, along with the rest of the world, thanks to the combined efforts of Silver and Sonic - who disappeared in the process. Sometime after, Tangle participated in a party to celebrate the end of the crisis alongside the rest of Sonic's friends, but the party gets interrupted by the arrival of Eggman in a new mech. Tangle is joined in the ensuing fight by a returned Sonic - having been in Blaze's dimension with amnesia. With Sonic's arrival, he is able to free Omega - who was the core of the mech - and force Eggman to retreat. As Eggman runs away, Tangle tells everyone to group hug Sonic as they express gratitude at his return. Sonic and Tangle then help everyone in putting out the fires caused by the battle as a new day dawns.
Test Run[]
In the recently rebuilt HQ of the Restoration, Tangle overhears about freak weather happening along the coast and takes new acquaintance Belle to ask about it, only to find that Sonic, Tails and Amy are already being briefed about it. Sonic notes it's been a while since he's seen Tangle, though the reunion is cut off when the source of the storms - an ominous tower - is revealed. Sonic offers to go to the tower and Tangle is excited to go as well, but Jewel - now leader of the Restoration - informs her she can't since she's on inventory duty. Sonic tries to cheer Tangle up by saying he'll hit her up the next time Eggman causes trouble before leaving with Tails and Amy. Belle, wanting to go to the tower as well, sneaks Tangle to the HQ's machine shop where an broken-down Extreme Gear sits as the two use it to go to the tower.
Sneaking into the tower, Tangle discovers that Sonic and the others are trapped inside a series of test chambers created by Eggman to test new inventions. She and Belle capture Eggman's assistants and get them to tell them which portal leads to the chamber Sonic and company are in. After getting the information, Tangle ties her tail around a nearby pole for safety and prepares to jump into the portal until Belle stops her from making a hasty decision. Tangle convinces Belle to let her go - citing the fight Sonic and company are currently in - before jumping in to assist. Tangle eventually pulls Sonic, Tails, and Amy out of the chamber, only to find that her tail being in the gate for so long caused it to overload. They, along with Belle and Eggman's assistants manage to get out of the tower before it blows up.
Zeti Hunt[]
Tangle returns to Restoration HQ while the Deadly Six are on the move again following their defeats near the tail-end of the Metal Virus crisis. The Six launch an assault on HQ that forces Tangle, alongside Whisper, to fortify the command center from their assault. Sonic arrives just as the Six make it to the command center and fight them. From her position, Tangle assists Sonic in the battle, first by serving as an anchor for Whisper to shoot through a hole in the door, then by punching any Zeti that gets near the door with her tail. In retaliation, Zavok - after taking Whisper out of the fight - knocks Tangle unconscious by slamming her into the door from the outside, forcing Sonic to fight the Six alone until Tails arrives. After the Six are defeated, Tangle informs Sonic that Belle had been kidnapped by Doctor Starline during the assault.
Fanon[]
Sonangle isn't a very widespread one within the Sonic fandom. One of the biggest detriment to this ship's popularity is Tangle's newness to the series. By the time of Tangle's introduction in the IDW series' fourth issue in April 2018, Sonic had already been paired up with several other characters over the years, putting this ship at a bit of a disadvantage. It's further disadvantaged by more people deciding to ship Tangle with Blaze (who appeared in the same issue), and later with fellow IDW series newcomer Whisper, showing that Tangle had more options than Sonic, as well.
Despite all of this, there are still supporters for this ship. Tangle being the first new named character introduced for the IDW series would draw people to pair them up, especially since the image that revealed her featured her alongside Sonic. It's also noted by fans, and even some official previews, that Sonic and Tangle are "kindred spirits". More specifically, their personalities are noted to mesh well together and have plenty of overlap with each other, such as having a need for adventure and having similar amounts of confidence and optimism.
Fanwork for Sonangle started appearing not long after Tangle was first revealed in January 2018. However, due to the relatively low support for this ship, it's on the low side in terms of volume. Tagged original art on DeviantArt art is a seldom seen sight. On the fanfic side, this ship only had five tagged fics on AO3 from 2019 to 2023, though it has since increased to seventy-five as of August 2024. A large number of these fics where by Brainshark, who revived the ship on the site with "The Pursuit Of Ambition" and later began "Sonangle Summer 2024" where they would upload a one shot daily from July 1st, 2024 to August 12th, 2024, totaling to forty-five one shots (counting the two prequels released to tease the event) and over twenty-five thousand words by the end. Other contributors on AO3 include Atallpanguy and SpouseMaster9.

Trivia[]
- According to writer Ian Flynn, Tangle was partially based on one of the earliest concepts for Sonic, a rabbit that could use his ears to grab and throw objects. [1]
- The ship name Sonangle was first used in a Wattpad fanfic for the ship between Sonic and Five Nights at Freddy's Mangle.
