Canon[]

Books[]

Balin and Dwalin are the sons of Fundin, a kinsman of the royal line of Durin's folk. Balin, the older of the pair, was born nine years before Dwalin. Both brothers were still quite young when their father died during the Battle of Azanulbizar, the concluding battle of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Both of them later accompanied Thráin, king of their folk, as he attempted to return to their lost dominion of Erebor. However, they became separated from Thráin during the journey and, failing to find him, returned to their people and pledged themselves to Thráin's son, Thorin, as the new leader of their kind.

When Gandalf joined with Thorin to organize an expedition to retake Erebor, Balin and Dwalin were the first members of the company to arrive at the chosen meeting place: Bag End, home of Bilbo Baggins, in the Shire. Balin arrived after Dwalin, and Bilbo soon found them "talking at the table like old friends" before he learned of their familial connection. The two would later join in the effort to assist Bilbo in caring for his other (almost all uninvited) guests. When all the Dwarves broke out their instruments later in the evening, both Balin and Dwalin were revealed to play the viol.

In further illustration of their brotherly bond, Balin and Dwalin took refuge in the same tree when the company was trying to escape a large number of Wargs. Later, as the Dwarves were arriving in pairs at the house of Beorn, the two brothers came together. Both also suffered particularly while using barrels to escape the realm of Mirkwood. After living through the Battle of Five Armies, both brothers settled at the reclaimed Erebor. Years later, when Balin led an expedition to retake the Dwarves' ancestral home of Moria, Dwalin did not go with him.

In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Balin and Dwalin's reunion at Bag End occurs onscreen. Balin, seeing Dwalin, gives a cry of delight, drawing Dwalin's attention. The two greet each other warmly and as though it's been some time since their last encounter. Dwalin comments that Balin is "wider and shorter than when last [they] met", with Balin replying that he is indeed "Wider, [but] not shorter." Their amiable exchange continues with the taller Dwalin taking Balin by the shoulders; the pair then slam their heads together in an apparent gesture of fondness. The two are soon helping themselves to the contents of Bilbo's larders, much to the hobbit's consternation.

In The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Balin and Dwalin are both called to counsel with Thorin as he grows increasingly paranoid due to dragon sickness
