Spock and Bones have a very begrudging friendship. Although they are often forced to work together due to serving on the same starship, and both being Kirk's closest friends. Often they end up butting heads and arguing over most problems. As McCoy is the more emotional human to Spock's logical Vulcan, often coming at every problem with those specific viewpoints. McCoy often remarks on Spock being Vulcan, or bringing up that he is actually half Vulcan very often. Spock normally has his own quick comebacks, though more based in logic, and the belief that his Vulcan half is more superior.

Spones is one of the most well known and earliest ships in the Star Trek fandom. Originating from the original series, it is often the most common used examples of a "Enemies to Lovers" or "Opposites Attract" trope. Many like their constant bickering and see them as an old married couple who have been together for years, given how familiar they are with each other. The ship name comes from the beginning of Spock's name, and the nickname given to McCoy by Kirk "Bones". Many see them as two halves of a whole, given how Bones is the emotion to Spock's logic. Making them foil's to each other. They're constant bickering was also well liked and popular among non-shippers, so much so that there was more of their dynamic written into the original series.
There is a subsection of AOS fans of the ship who will create AU's with the two in the 2005 film Doom. This is due to Karl Urban (AOS McCoy) staring in the film, and it gaining some popularity after the release of the AOS films. Some of the fans prefer to ship the AOS version over the TOS version due to their bonding during "Beyond" and the other films. As it felt like one of the most consistent relationships across all three. Some will point out that Bones actually liked Spock at the start of the film when he called out Kirk. Some fans deciding to take it in a more shippable context that wasn't intended.
On AO3, Spones is the second most written ship for Leonard and Spock. It is also the fourth most written ship in the Star Trek: Alternate Original Series tag and the second most written in the Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Original Series (Movies) and Star Trek tags.
