SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated comedy television series.
Plot[]
The original SpongeBob SquarePants series is episodic non-continuity gag cartoon that focuses on anthropomorphic sea creatures, living in an undersea town called Bikini Bottom. As a result there is not a single, consistent plot outside of the main premise of the show. Focusing primarily on the titular character, SpongeBob SquarePants, for a significant portion of the original series. The series has since developed to become an ensemble cast cartoon, with many episodes focusing on various characters outside of SpongeBob alone.
SpongeBob SquarePants (1999-)[]
The series begins with SpongeBob applying for a job at his favorite fast food restaurant, the Krusty Krab. The rest of the first season focused on SpongeBob adjusting to life as the new frycook and all the oddities that working at the Krusty Krab entails, and quickly becoming renown for his talent and skills making Krabby Patties. Among the oddities working at the Krusty Krab introduces to his life includes the long-standing rivalry between his boss, Mr. Krabs, and the owner of the restaurant across the street, Plankton. Plankton seeks to discover the secret ingredient to the Krabby Patty secret formula, aiming to overthrow the popularity of the Krusty Krab as the owner of the Chum Bucket. As the series progresses, the more integral this dynamic becomes to the franchise.
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004)[]
The culmination of the direction the first three seasons went in terms of story, this film is the first major installment that features Plankton as a credible threat in his pursuit of the Krabby Patty secret formula. When Mr. Krabs opens a second location of the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob fully expects Mr. Krabs to make him manager of the new location, only to discover that Mr. Krabs feels that SpongeBob is too childish and irresponsible for such a position. But when Plankton frames Mr. Krabs for the theft of King Neptune's crown, it's up to SpongeBob to clear his name and return the crown to it's rightful owner and prove himself to his boss with the help of Patrick. Originally intended to serve as the series finale, the story was conceptualized as a "mythical hero's quest"[1] to put SpongeBob's strengths and weaknesses to the test.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical (2016-2019)[]
Formerly known as The SpongeBob Musical, directed by Tina Landeau and based on the original three seasons and first movie. The musical's plot begins with an ordinary day in Bikini Bottom, with everyone going about their lives only to be disturbed by the threat of an apocalyptic eruption. With the town divided on how to handle the crisis, it's up to SpongeBob and his friends to figure out a way to save Bikini Bottom and all who inhabit it.
The musical quickly became a hit, with a professional recording of the Broadway production that aired on Nickelodeon and available on DVD, titled The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage! Following the conclusion of the original Broadway production, the musical had a short-lived American tour that ended in 2020 as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However following the closing of the American tour there has been a German tour in 2022 between the months of October and December, and an ongoing UK tour in the year of 2023.
Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years (2021-)[]
Following the release of the third SpongeBob film, Kamp Koral is a CGI animated spin-off similar in tone to the original series. Focusing on a 10 year old SpongeBob and friends, attending the titular camp after Mr. Krabs takes over as proprietor of the establishment. Shown to be taking place 15-16 years prior to the original series, and confirmed to be in an altered timeline orchestrated by the current-day Sandy in collaboration with her younger self. As a result there are many aspects of the series that may not be in continuity with the original series.
The Patrick Star Show (2021-)[]
A spin-off series taking place 7-8 years prior to the original series, focusing on Patrick hosting a variety show from home with help from his family. Far more absurdist and exaggerated than the original series, The Patrick Star Show is located in a suburb in the town of Ukulele Bottom[2] just a drive away.
