Spongematch is the het ship between Spongy and Match from the Battle for Dream Island fandom.
Canon[]
Pre-BFDI comics[]
When Match asks Firey what he used one of her matches for, he explains he lit one in front of Spongy when asked how it feels to be so hot. Match calls Firey out for being rude to Spongy, comparing it to if Teardrop taunted Firey. Later when Spongy's campfire ends up being responsible for a forest fire, Match yells at him for it and asks him never to light the forest on fire again. Spongy tries to explain to her that he was simply cold.
Battle for Dream Island[]
During team picking, Blocky sarcastically tells Match that they wouldn't want Spongy on the team. Spongy ends up being selected because of this and Match gets mad at Blocky for it. Later while crossing the Goiky Canal, Match oversees the Squashy Grapes members floating on Spongy after failing to get on their team's boat. Match and a few other of her teammates later join them standing on top of Spongy in the water.
In the obstacle course challenge while waiting for Pencil, Match sees Spongy pass by and says that he makes her want to hurl. Although, she and her alliance help Spongy up the rock wall because they're teammates. Later while Match rides the ski lift with her alliance, she is startled when Spongy gets in one and weighs them down.
During the test contest, Match wants to play Spongy Cake with Pencil, a rhyming game that verbally insults Spongy. The two do so with miniature versions of themselves, although Pencil is hesitant to keep going since Match rubs her matchstick on Pencil's pencil and shortly afterwards causes a fire. Later through the season, Match tries to play Spongy Cake again on two separate occasions: one with Pencil holding a small snowball and another with Snowball, Tennis Ball, and Woody as they're flying through a UFO. The Official Character Guide book also notes that she developed the game because of her dislike towards him.
Battle for Dream Island Again[]
After Book informs the team that Spongy got captured by Evil Leafy, Match celebrates. Golf Ball calls her out for disrespecting her teammate, making Match explain that she's had to deal with him for several years and finds it to be relieving to see him gone.
When learning that Fries ate Spongy as a result of anti-poison side effects, Match and Pencil cheer over this. In the Cake at Stake afterwards when the two end up in the bottom two, Spongy starts crying and one of his tears lands on Match. She is disgusted by this and Pencil wishes that he gets eliminated because of this.
While the rest of the contestants crank the HPHPRCC to create a new Hand-powered Recovery Center, Match plays Spongy Cake with Ruby. Later after the machine is created, Match stops Yellow Face from recovering Spongy and claims that the most important people need to be recovered first shortly before recovering Pencil.
Battle for BFDI[]
Pencil tells Match about using Lightning to deal with their enemies more effectively, ordering him to strike Spongy. Afterwards, Match and Pencil cheer when Lightning successfully does this.
Shortly before Flower grabs Ruby to talk to her, Ruby is playing Spongy Cake with Match. Afterwards when Ruby returns to Match and wants to play Spongy Cake with her, she finds Match with Spongy, who says that she analyzed her game against him and started playing it with Spongy himself. Spongy cheers and raises his leg upon hearing this.
While Match and Pencil try and boost Loser up to escape the EXIT, Spongy appears above the two halfway inside Four. Liy tells the two that they will have to climb through Spongy to get a better chance of escaping Four, although Match and Pencil find having to do so disgusting. Liy insists that it'll be their only chance since Four's mouth is too high, causing Match to bail with Pencil.
Fanon[]
Spongematch is fairly rare in the Battle for Dream Island fandom. Despite their bad history in the show, interest in the two picked up when the series hinted of the two having a possible friendship later on. As a result, the ship grew within fandom spaces years afterwards, mainly on platforms such as art on Twitter and video edits on TikTok. The ship gained a following particularly in the forementioned platforms by rarepair enjoyers. The pairing is more popular on Spongy's side, though overshadowed by pairings such as Matchcil and Spongebag.
