Square Mom is the familyship between Steven Universe and Garnet from the Steven Universe fandom.

Canon

As shown in Season 4 episode "Three Gems and a Baby", Garnet calmly accepted Rose's decision to give up her physical form to create Steven, despite knowing Rose longer than anyone but Pearl. However, despite being doting and sweet towards Baby Steven, she initially assumed that he was a fusion like her, but looked quite hurt when she unfused in front of him to show him how, he only started crying. The Gems then planned to never let Steven see Garnet unfusing until they deem him old enough to know.

Season 1

In Gem Glow, Steven accidentally summons his shield for the first time when eating his favorite ice cream, but he struggles to replicate it after unsummoning it. When asking Garnet for advice last, she can only tell how she does it, either she works hard and worries less, or combines all energy around her to summon her gauntlets, neither of which are of any help to Steven.

In Together Breakfast, Steven sees Garnet open the Burning Room while holding a strange scroll. When preparing breakfast for himself and the Gems, he asks her what she's doing, to which Garnet replies that she has to burn the scroll while showing him part of it. Steven is fascinated by it and takes a picture of it with his phone, only for Garnet to snatch his phone away, telling Steven that she needs to burn the whole phone as well now. When Steven manages to bring the breakfast to the very top of the Burning Room, he witnesses Garnet break his phone in half. However, as Garnet is burning the scroll and bubbling the smoke it emits, she's distracted by Steven falling from the ceiling and the smoke escapes, going to Steven's direction to her horror. Fortunately, Steven is not touched by the smoke as the breakfast in his hands absorbs it, but the smoke turns the breakfast into a giant monster, to which Garnet tells Steven that they need to destroy it as she and the other Gems are incapacitated by it. Steven does as she told him, but when Garnet joins the other Gems in finally having breakfast with Steven, their appetite is ruined and they decide to just order a pizza instead.

In Bubble Buddies, Steven sees a girl he has a crush on alone by the beach and prepared a glow bracelet for the occasion in his freezer. When the Gems notice that Steven is interested in her, Pearl and Amethyst act overbearing and plan how their first meeting should go, but Garnet notices that they're just making Steven nervous. She ends up warding them off and tell him to just talk to the girl. When Steven saves Connie's life from a new Gem monster and they manage to defeat it together, the Gems rush towards them to see if they're okay. However, when Pearl and Amethyst are once again acting pushy towards Steven, Garnet nonchalantly picks them up and tells them to not mess with Steven's "funky flow", leaving the two friends alone.

In Serious Steven, Garnet and the other Gems take Steven on his "first serious mission", but the other Gems are only disappointed when Steven is already overwhelmed by butterflies swarming him, to which Garnet shushes them and tells them to just keep an eye on him. When they enter a giant, upside-down pyramid and Steven accidentally flips the gravity inside, Pearl and Amethyst start to have a fight over who gets to go with Steven as Pearl suggests splitting the group. Garnet however overrules them, taking Steven with her and orders Pearl and Amethyst to go together instead. Garnet needs to carry Steven through most of the pyramid's traps, mostly because Steven had flashbacks to him breaking a teacup ride after falling out of it. However, when they believe they found the exit, they find out that no matter what path they take, they always end up back where they started. When Garnet tells them that they just need to keep going, Steven breaks down, but then realizes that the pyramid really is like the teacup ride, as the rooms spin around to send them back indefinitely. Garnet realizes what Steven meant and breaks the floor beneath her with her gauntlets, they end up in a control room, powered by a gemstone embedded in the centerpiece. Steven asks Garnet to launch him towards it and he manages to take the gemstone with her help and the other Gems praise Steven as they leave the pyramid.

In Tiger Millionaire, Steven finds out that Amethyst often sneaks out at night to a wrestling ring near the city, to vent her frustrations about the other Gems. Steven asks to join her, finding Pearl's overbearing nature and Garnet stoically judging him to be equally nagging on his self-esteem. At the end of the episode, Garnet and Pearl find out about it due to Steven leaving flyers for their wrestling personas around town. But when Steven tells them how insecure Amethyst feels, framing it as her persona's backstory, they realize that they were being too hard on them. To repay them, Garnet and Pearl join the fight and let Steven and Amethyst win to boost their self-esteem.

Fanon

Many fans appreciate how Garnet develops from initially presenting herself as stoic and aloof, to actually showing her emotions around Steven and doting on him, while still giving him space to grow. Some even make the argument that Garnet is the best mother to Steven out of the three main Gems.
