- “The spirit of the great Lenin and his victorious banner animate us now in this patriotic war just as they did twenty-three years ago.”
- — Josef Stalin, Speech at the Red Army Parade on the Red Square, Moscow, 7 november 1941
Stalenin is the slash ship between Josef Vissarionovič Stalin (1878-1953) and Vladimir Ilyich (1870-1924) Lenin from the Historical fandom.
Canon[]
Marx & Engels' thoughts[]
Following the general consensus on homosexuality at the time, Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820-1893) (the ideological predecessors of Lenin) both can be considered homophobic by modern standards. Although never discussed in their pubblic works, in private letters we can see how Marx and Engels considered homosexuality on the same level as pederasty.
Under Lenin[]
Lenin's stance on homosexuality seemed to be neutral, as the Bolsheviks decriminalized sodomy (being one of the first countries in the world to do so) following the abolishment of the tsarist penal code at the wake of the October Revolution in 1917. Although the penal code was rewritten two times in the newborn Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, once under Lenin in 1922 and a second time two years after Lenin's death in 1926, homosexuality was not criminilized neither of these times. Despite this, homophobia was still rampant, especially in less central territories of the Soviet Union.
Under Stalin[]
- “Sexual relations between men (pederasty)—
shall be punishable by deprivation of freedom for a period not to exceed five years.
Pederasty when committed with physical violence, a threat, or with respect to a minor, or when taking advantage of the dependent position of the injured party-
shall be punishable by deprivation of freedom for a period not to exceed eight years” - — Article 121 of the criminal code of the Russian SFSR, 1960
Under Stalin, homosexuality (de jure between men only) was recriminalized in 1933 under article 153-a of the criminal code (better known as article 121, where it was moved when the criminal code was rewritten in 1960), as part of a larger campaign targeting "western degeneracy", labeling it as "fascistic" and "pedophilic", expanding on Marx and Engels' line of thought.
After Stalin's death[]
After Stalin's death came a period of economic and political liberalization (that would eventually lead to the dissolution of the Union), male and female homosexuals became both more tolerated, although homosexuality would never be decriminalized again under the Soviet government.
Outside of the Soviet Union[]
The ideological heirs of Stalin are many: among them the most followed worldwide are Enver Hoxha (1908-1985) and Mao Zedong (1893-1976), both following Stalin's thoughs on homosexuality. The People's Socialist Republic of Albania (called "People's Republic of Albania" from 1946 to 1976) had a nearly identical law for homosexuality as did the USSR, using ther word "pederasty" interchangeably for homosexuality and pedophilia; homosexuality won't be decriminalized under the people's government. The People's Republic of China punished homosexuality under the law of "hooliganism", but would later be decriminalized in 1997 under Jiang Zemin (1926-2022), and declassified from the status of mental illness in 2001.
